00:00 Hi, I'm Rick Payway.
00:01 Welcome to my Jeep Ranch.
00:02 Today we're going to figure out how to replace
00:05 a drive shaft U-joint out in the field.
00:07 It's not really out in the field,
00:08 but we're gonna fake it for you
00:09 because it's the same thing
00:11 whether you're in the middle of the desert
00:12 or in my backyard.
00:13 So your first step is to stabilize the Jeep.
00:22 Remember, your drive shaft's gonna come off,
00:23 so your engine isn't holding anything anymore.
00:25 Put on your parking brake and then go for it.
00:28 (upbeat music)
00:30 So what happened on this joint,
00:37 all the needle bearings fell out.
00:38 Really a common type of problem.
00:40 Gotta get this grease zerk out
00:47 that hasn't seen any grease in a long time.
00:50 So the next step is to actually pound out this U-joint.
00:57 By doing that, we're gonna pound on the caps,
00:59 force it through, then the joint will come out this way
01:02 and we'll pound out the other cap.
01:04 Notice I got a socket that's kind of mushroomed.
01:06 That's because it is a dedicated socket,
01:09 exactly the size of a 1310 Spicer U-joint.
01:14 There it is.
01:15 Can actually take the joint out.
01:19 (upbeat music)
01:22 Okay, next step is to make sure that the snap ring grooves
01:35 as well as the bores are clean and clear.
01:38 And I also like to take a file.
01:40 Just saves you time where everything is a little bit off.
01:44 (upbeat music)
01:46 So your next step is to put in the U-joint.
01:53 Do that, you take out the grease zerk.
01:55 Make sure that the hole for the grease zerk
01:58 is pointed the right way so you can get to it.
02:00 Then put one cap in, push it through just a little bit.
02:06 That allows you to put this on here
02:10 without any loss of needle bearings.
02:13 And tap it together.
02:15 Then you put in a new snap ring.
02:20 There we go.
02:22 Notice it's a little far away.
02:25 That's all right because we're going to pound
02:28 the joint down into it.
02:29 And you can put in the other snap ring.
02:35 Now install the joint.
02:40 All you have to do is put on the grease zerk.
02:44 But they come with enough grease
02:46 so you can drive off the trail, get home no problem.
02:50 (upbeat music)
02:52 (upbeat music)
02:55 So we finally got the rear drive shaft U-joint replaced.
03:15 It's installed, the next step is go take it for a test drive.
03:18 (upbeat music)
