00:04 Every single car internal combustion engine built has a distinct firing order.
00:10 And most American cars,
00:12 they list the firing order on the top of the intake.
00:16 Usually it's either in the front of the carburetor or
00:18 in the back of the carburetor.
00:19 On the intake manifold, it shows the cylinders with numbers on each port.
00:25 So this car has 1, 3, 5, 7, 2, 4, 6, 8,
00:32 which is evens and odds.
00:35 And the firing order on this car is actually 1, 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2.
00:40 If you don't get them in that order, the car will misfire.
00:44 And so number one is on the left bank in the front.
00:47 I have them nice and neatly tidied up.
00:51 So number one is here.
00:54 And actually, if you really wanna know the truth,
00:56 it says it on the distributor cap, it says number one.
00:58 And we need to go in a clockwise position.
01:02 So now you look for the distributor cap and the next one is eight.
01:07 So number eight is down here because they're odd and even.
01:12 And then once you're done with that, the all important one is the coil wire.
01:22 Without the coil wire, it doesn't fire.
01:24 And you put the coil wire which goes in the center of the distributor cap.
01:27 [MUSIC]
01:31 And next, you close the distributor cap and rotor and
01:34 make sure that the wires and cap rotor are all in good shape.
01:38 So after we put the coil wire which is in the center of the distributor cap, and
01:42 we have installed the spark plugs, we gapped them at 30.
01:47 Installed this new set of points, gapped them at 30 or
01:50 16th if you don't have the gauge.
01:52 And all the wires are in the correct spot due to the firing order
01:56 on the intake manifold, the car should theoretically fire up.
02:00 So before firing the car, you should check the oil,
02:02 make sure it's full, and check the coolant to make sure it's full.
02:05 When you do go to start the car,
02:08 you wanna make sure that you turn the ignition on inside the car.
02:11 And you definitely wanna make sure it's in neutral.
02:17 Very important.
02:18 If it's a stick shift car, you don't wanna be run over.
02:22 So I think right now we're ready to fire the car up.
02:25 Go ahead and take your remote starter, give it a couple of spurts of gas.
02:30 [SOUND] Okay, so the next step,
02:36 once the car is running, you need to set the timing.
02:39 And the way you set the timing is you use a timing light which has an induction and
02:43 a positive and a negative.
02:45 The induction needs to go to number one.
02:47 In this case, left side front cylinder.
02:51 The induction cable is just as simple as that.
02:55 Goes on, clicks.
02:57 Positive and negative need to go on the battery or if you can find a spot if
03:03 the battery just so happens to not be located in the engine compartment.
03:07 Then what you do is you use the distributor by rotating it clockwise or
03:12 counterclockwise to set the timing.
03:14 You need a wrench something like this to actually loosen the distributor off.
03:19 Once you hit the timing, you tighten it, you're done.
03:22 Okay, so what you're looking for is there is a counter at the bottom of
03:25 the timing cover.
03:27 And it has degrees written, zero, ten, 20, 30 degrees.
03:32 What this car specs is, is top dead center.
03:35 So you wanna look down at zero and on the crank there's a line.
03:40 A lot of people put white paint on it or yellow paint and
03:42 you need to line that up with the flashing timing light.
03:46 Once you line it up, you'll take your wrench and tighten the distributor down.
03:51 [SOUND]
03:59 That's it.
04:01 Okay, so the next step is we're gonna clean the carburetor and
04:04 we're gonna adjust the mixture.
04:06 The mixture on this car is adjusted by a screw on this side of the carburetor.
04:13 To lean the car out, you would screw the screw in.
04:17 To reach in it, you would screw the screw out.
04:20 But you don't do it a lot.
04:22 After that, I set the idle, usually somewhere between 850 and 900 RPM for
04:28 a nice smooth idle, install the air cleaner, and get ready to test drive.
04:31 [MUSIC]
04:34 A car that's cold will react to carburetor adjustment different to when it's hot.
04:39 Because obviously when it's hot, it combusts better.
04:41 So what you saw me do was wait for it to get warm and
04:45 then I adjusted the mixture screws.
04:47 After the mixture screws were set, I set the idle and
04:50 now we're ready for a test drive.
04:51 All right.
04:53 [SOUND]
04:55 Well, it sounds pretty good.
04:56 [SOUND]
04:59 It's running a lot better than it did before.
05:02 You know, the car seems to be running on eight cylinders.
05:06 I think we're doing okay.
05:09 I wanted to thank you for watching me tune up this International Scout 1969.
05:14 Tune into Motor Trend again.
05:17 Thank you.
