00:00 (engine revving)
00:02 It's about man and machine,
00:05 and about how fast you can go from point A to point B.
00:08 (rock music)
00:11 - You know, their father started this,
00:19 I believe back in the 60s,
00:21 and it's evolved into his son's racing,
00:24 and now even his grandson's.
00:26 We strictly focus on the unlimited trophy truck.
00:30 This is the most winningest off-road car
00:32 in off-road history.
00:33 This is the Land Shark.
00:35 Bay 3 is our practice truck.
00:37 This is a truck we use for pre-running now.
00:40 It's exactly like a race car,
00:42 except it has a pump gas engine in it.
00:44 This is Oliver, our lead cleaning department right here.
00:47 He's one of the best there is, I guarantee it.
00:50 This is one of our customer trucks that we do.
00:53 It's one of our state-of-the-art trophy trucks.
00:56 This is the fabrication shop.
00:58 This is where we build all the trucks.
00:59 We do all the grinding and welding
01:01 and all the dirty work over here.
01:03 This is our parts room.
01:07 This is where we store and inventory
01:10 all the parts for all the trucks.
01:12 Right here, this is Ed and Tim's truck.
01:17 This is number 19.
01:19 This is what they currently race now.
01:21 We're getting it ready to go to a test session
01:23 tomorrow out in Barstow.
01:25 We're getting it ready for the Mint 400.
01:27 (dramatic music)
01:30 Today, we're shaking down the Terros Motorsports
01:45 trophy trucks for the Mint 400.
01:47 Probably one of the roughest races we do.
01:54 And the pace that you have to push now
01:56 to win the overall is insane.
01:58 At the end of the day, we're racing 40, 50 other cars
02:01 for the first place in the race.
02:02 But first and foremost, you gotta beat the desert.
02:06 They've been at it since day one.
02:07 I mean, as long as you can think of,
02:09 the Terribles have been in it.
02:10 They really do their homework.
02:11 We come out and test all the time.
02:13 Every time we test, today's one of those days,
02:18 we test to get better than we were the last race.
02:21 The team, you know, we try stuff all the time
02:23 to adapt, to make things better, quicker, faster,
02:27 lighter, stronger.
02:28 You're talking about racing a 400 mile race
02:32 and you lose by 13 seconds or 10 seconds.
02:36 That's how tight the racing's become.
02:38 - You're trying to go 120 miles an hour
02:40 when you should be going 60.
02:41 You gotta do it for 400 miles to run up front.
02:43 So it's just, kind of gnarly sport we're in here.
02:46 - My dad, Jerry Herbst, just passed away.
02:53 So the legacy of my dad was about,
02:55 if we're gonna do it, do it right.
02:56 If we're gonna race, race to win.
02:58 But first thing and foremost is, you know, always be safe.
03:01 We've proved it through, you know,
03:03 multiple class trophy truck championships,
03:06 class one championships, Ba'al 1000 overalls.
03:10 People that race understand how important the family
03:12 and the family part of this sport is.
03:14 You know, all of our kids are getting to be that age now.
03:16 They're all starting to come up through the ranks,
03:18 but it's something you've gotta love.
03:20 You know, my dad never forced this on us.
03:22 We enjoyed it 'cause we enjoyed it.
03:24 We race 'cause we wanna race.
03:26 (upbeat music)
