Texas Southern head coach Clarence McKinney's postgame interview in Week 8 against Florida A&M.
Transcript
00:00 scored on the next couple drives and the difference in the game, in my opinion,
00:05 was what happened towards the end of the first half with him getting a quick score.
00:09 And our defense in the second half,
00:15 not getting off the field and our offense not staying on the field.
00:19 And so when you got a combination of offense going three and
00:23 out and defense giving up long drives, that's a recipe for a disaster.
00:27 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:34 >> I just wanna be asking you alluded to it with regards to the play,
00:37 Charles Bishop inside HBCU Sports Lab.
00:40 You alluded to the play right before half.
00:42 Can you kind of walk us through what happened with the defense on that play?
00:46 >> Yeah, we just got beat in the coverage.
00:50 I let the guy get behind us and quarterback found him.
00:56 We got beat over the top of the coverage, which we're planning to keep everything
01:00 in front of us and not let a guy get behind us.
01:03 But unfortunately, the defensive back didn't execute the plan.
01:09 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:18 >> Coach, despite it being up and down stretch for you guys this season,
01:21 what do you say about the production of Jace Wilson out there?
01:24 He finished the game with 178 yards and three touchdowns.
01:28 How do you compliment his play considering the circumstance he was thrown into?
01:34 >> Yeah, Jace has done a tremendous job for us as a program.
01:38 He came into the season not expecting to be the starter.
01:42 The team didn't expect him to be the starter.
01:44 He's new to the program.
01:46 But he was thrown into the fire against some quality opponents.
01:50 First start was against Toledo, started against Rice.
01:55 And us as coaches, we're still trying to figure out what he does best.
02:00 And so we can't treat Jace as if he's Andrew,
02:05 because they're two different talents, two different people.
02:09 And so we're learning Jace, Jace is learning us, learning the scheme.
02:13 I think he's doing a tremendous job.
02:15 I think he's done a tremendous job.
02:16 He's given us an opportunity to be one of the better offenses in the sweat.
02:22 And the future is bright for him.
02:24 [BLANK_AUDIO]
02:29 >> Hey, Coach, Darion Gray, locked on HBCU.
02:31 I felt like some of your better passing plays, specifically in the first half,
02:35 came off a play action in the RPOs.
02:38 What effect does the running game, specifically with Owens,
02:41 do to the passing game for TSU in this stretch of the offense?
02:45 >> Well, you said it, when you run RPOs, that's a combination of run pass option.
02:52 And when you can run the ball, it creates throwing lanes at the second and
02:56 third level.
02:57 And so, Lederer did a great job of running the ball early in the first half.
03:02 And we were able to capitalize on the RPO version of,
03:08 the pass version of the RPO.
03:09 [BLANK_AUDIO]
03:12 >> Kenyatta Covell, Dr. Vils, inside the HBCU Sports Lab.
03:15 I know it's always the totality of the game, but I wanna go back,
03:19 going into the game, and essentially how effective the defense was against
03:24 family, which is a pretty explosive offense, prior to that 58-yard play,
03:29 where he got behind the defense, which we saw.
03:32 You held them passing to just 60 yards,
03:37 as well as rushing for 60 yards prior to that play.
03:40 Can you talk about coming into the game, what were some of the key things that you
03:43 wanna get done, obviously, that were effective for the first half?
03:46 >> Well, we wanna stop the run, first and foremost.
03:49 We wanna be able to stop the run, put those guys in a passing situation,
03:56 where an obvious passing situation, where we feel like they're gonna have to throw
04:01 the ball, and then we're pretty decent pass coverage wise.
04:05 So I thought we did a really good job of stopping the run.
04:09 >> Our issue has been depth, and
04:14 you see that we can stop the run.
04:19 >> Well, we have a group of D linemen that are injured,
04:23 that can't play, or they're playing injured.
04:27 And the guys that are out there are getting tired, and
04:29 we're not able to rotate the front like we would normally have if we had everyone
04:35 healthy, and so I thought the scheme early on was good.
04:41 But later, there are some things that we needed to make an adjustment to, and
04:47 then fatigue setting in as well with our front.
04:50 [BLANK_AUDIO]
04:56 >> Coach, I wasn't here to start.
04:59 I guess the second half is when they broke down for you, and
05:03 you just mentioned about depth, but toward the end of the game,
05:08 last two or three minutes, what was on your agenda to tell the guys to finish strong?
05:16 >> Our guys is a team of fighters.
05:18 They're gonna play to the end.
05:20 They're gonna play from the opening kickoff to the final whistle.
05:23 And as you can tell, we're gonna play as hard as we can play until
05:29 the final whistle of the game.
05:31 Our team had an opportunity to try and get a score.
05:36 We scored a point, some points, got the onside kick and tried to go score again.
05:42 And that's just the character of the team.
05:44 We're not a team of quitters.
05:46 We're gonna play to the final whistle.
05:48 >> Last question.
05:50 You talked about that play at the end of the first half a couple times.
05:54 How much did that change the momentum of the game?
05:58 Did you feel like that was kind of the swing?
06:01 >> I don't think it changed the momentum.
06:03 I don't think there was a momentum issue within the game.
06:08 But I think that allowed them,
06:12 knowing that they were getting the ball back out of the halftime,
06:17 that they were up a possession to where they could come back and
06:21 tie the game up on the opening possession.
06:23 So not so much of a momentum change, but it definitely affected the game.
06:30 >> Yeah.
06:32 >> Thank you, coach.
06:33 >> Thank you.
