00:00 A van driver and his girlfriend were charged at the Sessions Court in Johor Bahru with
00:06 abandoning his 7-year-old son, causing him to suffer from malnutrition.
00:11 37-year-old R. Tayalan and 39-year-old K. Mageswari pleaded guilty to the charges under
00:17 Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 21 before Judge Fatima Zahari on Sunday.
00:25 According to the charge sheet, the pair had neglected the 7-year-old child between July
00:30 and October 12, causing him to suffer from malnutrition.
00:34 The offence was committed at a flat in Jalan Pulai Jaya 1/2, Taman Pulai Jaya, Johor Bahru.
00:41 Under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act, the two accused faced a fine of up to RM50,000,
00:48 a maximum jail term of 20 years, or both upon conviction.
00:53 Mageswari also faces a second charge of injuring the boy's right hand, for which she pleaded
00:58 not guilty.
00:59 Fatima set bail at RM6,000 for each of the accused with one surety and set additional
01:06 terms for the duo to report to the police station every month and to hand over their
01:10 international passports to the court.
01:13 The court then set November 21 for mention and council appointment.
01:17 According to reports, the couple were arrested by the police on October 13 at 4.13pm after
01:23 a woman found the child naked and locked in a toilet at a flat in Taman Pulai Jaya.
01:29 The boy is currently under the care of the Welfare Department and is being treated at
01:33 the Sultana Amina Hospital.
