00:00 It seems like there's no line that The Boys isn't willing to cross, but one particularly
00:05 dark moment had actor Chase Crawford feeling ready to lose his lunch.
00:10 The Boys is an incredibly entertaining show, but watching it for the first time means stumbling
00:15 down a rabbit hole of debauchery and despair.
00:17 At this point, even those who haven't turned their souls over to Amazon's popular superhero
00:22 series are well aware of its nihilistic tone.
00:25 Based on Garth Ennis and Derek Robertson's original comic book, The Boys presents a world
00:29 where superheroes are beloved celebrities consumed by greed and corruption.
00:33 Sure, they swoop in to save the day every now and again, but they like to do so when
00:37 the cameras are rolling and the fans are cheering.
00:40 As for when no one's looking, they're off harming innocents, doing drugs, and conducting
00:45 shady business for the mega-corporation that keeps them paid, Vought International.
00:50 With all these super-powered sickos running around, it's hard to get through a single
00:53 episode of the series without wincing, shielding your eyes, or filing away the latest plotline
00:59 for a discussion with your therapist.
01:01 The Boys is so disturbing, in fact, that it occasionally becomes too much for the actors
01:06 themselves.
01:07 The Boys star Chase Crawford has admitted to needing a breather after filming a particularly
01:11 disturbing moment in the series, but luckily, his character can breathe underwater.
01:16 As the Aquaman stand-in known as The Deep, he's a member of the elite superhero team
01:20 known as The Seven with the love of the ocean and its many creatures.
01:24 He also loves engaging in sexual misconduct, as Starlight learns personally during her
01:28 first day on the team.
01:29 After he exposes himself in front of her, he threatens to kick her out of the Seven
01:33 if she doesn't accept his advances.
01:35 "Hey, you shut your f---ing mouth."
01:37 "Or what?
01:38 You'll sick a grouper on me?"
01:40 Eventually, The Deep gets his comeuppance and is kicked out of the group, leading to
01:44 some shallow apologies as he hopes to regain his standing.
01:47 While the series goes on to explore some of his trauma's more in-depth, including self-worth
01:52 and body issues, he's likely too far gone for a true redemption arc.
01:56 The Deep's scene with Starlight in Episode 1 may be nauseating, but it isn't even the
02:01 scene that Crawford found the most difficult to film.
02:04 After Starlight reveals the assault to the public later on in Season 1, The Deep is banished
02:08 to Sandusky, Ohio, where a fan sexually assaults him using his gills.
02:13 Even though The Deep gets his water-breathing powers from his gills, he's self-conscious
02:17 of them, and the incident forces him to face his trauma head-on.
02:20 Crawford didn't have the best time filming the scene, telling MTV, "It was the most
02:25 uncomfortable scene ever.
02:27 It literally made me feel kind of nauseous.
02:29 I'm not going to lie.
02:30 It was just so weird and uncomfortable.
02:32 I could not have gotten out of there faster that day.
02:34 So yeah, it was pretty wild."
02:36 The scene is equally uncomfortable to watch, although it is a notable reversal of his earlier
02:41 assault on Starlight.
02:43 Sure, most scenes in The Voice are disturbing by design.
02:46 In this case, though, it wasn't just the content that caused Crawford's discomfort.
02:50 It was also production logistics.
02:52 Giving a man gills is no easy task.
02:54 The scene used a combination of CGI and prosthetics, which apparently meant replicating Crawford's
02:59 entire torso with some fishy additions.
03:02 During Variety's 2020 edition of Actors on Actors, Crawford explained,
03:06 "They had a great special effects guy replicate my entire torso down to the little chest hair.
03:11 I'm laying there, and I have my own fake torso on me with the gills that have a little bit
03:15 more room, and he's behind me pumping them with these air pumps so they move.
03:19 And the director is right over me.
03:21 I'm like, 'Guys, I'm nauseous.
03:23 Can I just get out of here?'"
03:25 The deep gills return in The Voice season 2 and 3, and to make things even weirder,
03:30 they're voiced by Patton Oswalt.
03:33 You imagine women will laugh at us, so you humiliate them first.
03:36 "That's not true."
03:37 You can't accept your own body, so you violate theirs.
03:41 "No."
03:43 "No."
03:44 (upbeat music)
03:46 you
