00:00Did Taylor Sheridan flip Kevin Costner the bird in the Yellowstone finale?
00:05That's what some fans believe after they spotted an unmistakable visitor in the sky.
00:09Yellowstone season 5 finale spoilers ahead.
00:12Yellowstone season 5 killed off its lead character, John Dutton, in a controversial manner that
00:16didn't exactly match the classy death clause that was reportedly stipulated in Kevin Costner's
00:21contract.
00:22However, life is a promise, the season 5 closer that's also possibly the series finale, gives
00:27the character a respectful send-off in the form of an emotional funeral, and he may just
00:31have made a surprise on-screen appearance, despite the clear lack of Costner.
00:36During the service for John, a falcon swoops in and locks eyes with Beth before flying
00:40away.
00:41This happens after she pays her final respects to her father, revealing that she had to give
00:45their land to Thomas Rainwater to ensure that it remains pure.
00:48Thus, the falcon can easily be interpreted as John's spirit, letting her know that he
00:52supports her decision, and this is a fitting form for him to take, considering that falcons
00:57are synonymous with strength.
00:59The concept of John returning as a raptor to his own funeral might sound birdbrained,
01:03but Yellowstone has embraced spiritual concepts before, such as the time Casey embarked on
01:07a vision quest, which he brings up again in the season 5 finale.
01:11Plus, it's already been established that feathered creatures are significant to this family,
01:15as a bird appears when Elsa dies at the end of 1883.
01:18So, while this particular falcon can easily be interpreted as John bidding farewell, it
01:23could also symbolize serious change for somebody else.
01:26The season 5 finale is all about saying goodbye to the past and preparing for the uncertainty
01:31of the future.
01:32That's clear enough when Thomas Rainwater inherits the ranch and vows to preserve it
01:35so that it's not in danger of being sold to crooked capitalists like Market Equities.
01:40Meanwhile, Beth and Rip are preparing to embark on a new adventure, so this is the perfect
01:44time for her to encounter an avian messenger.
01:47Falcons are widely viewed as symbols of change and fresh opportunities, which certainly applies
01:51to what lies ahead for this franchise.
01:54Life is a Promise sets up Beth and Rip's upcoming spinoff series by having them buy
01:58a ranch in Texas that's near a town where tourists aren't allowed to stop.
02:02He's going to run the ranch while she tries to find a way to strike it rich.
02:05Sounds like my kind of place.
02:07The couple are now officially free of their commitments to protecting a ranch that so
02:11much blood has been spilled over.
02:13However, it's very conceivable that they will encounter more problems in the future, as
02:17Yellowstone spinoffs tend to be full of violence and mayhem.
02:20And if this franchise has taught us anything, it's that rich people like to destroy cowboy
02:24havens in the name of so-called progress.
