00:00 Exorcisms, aliens, and murder dolls with meme-worthy dance moves. Ready or not, these horror franchises
00:07 are about to get bigger.
00:09 James Wan and Lee Winnell are two of the most successful filmmakers working in horror, and
00:13 it doesn't look like their reign will end anytime soon. This summer, we're getting the
00:17 fifth installment in the Insidious franchise, a series the duo created back in 2010. The
00:22 first two films follow the cursed Lambert family, headed by Patrick Wilson and Rose
00:26 Burns Josh and Renee. The third and fourth movies are prequels that take place several
00:31 years before the Lambert haunting.
00:33 Insidious The Red Door continues the story of the first two installments, and sees the
00:37 Lambert family facing yet another demonic presence.
00:39 "They suppressed our memories, but I can still feel something following us."
00:44 It takes place ten years after the events of the second film, in which the Lamberts
00:48 appear to defeat the evil forces that plague them. Their respite does not last, however.
00:53 As Lambert's son Dalton heads off to his first year of college, the family is forced to face
00:57 whatever lies behind that red door. The movie was produced by Winnell and Wan, and marks
01:02 Wilson's directorial debut. It finished shooting in August of 2022, and is set to be released
01:07 on July 7, 2023. So you don't have to wait long to dig your teeth into this one.
01:13 In Hollywood, the monsters just keep getting bigger and badder. Case in point, the 2018
01:18 film The Meg, in which Jason Statham fights off a shark. But The Meg, as she's lovingly
01:23 referred to, is not just any shark. She's a megalodon, an enormous, prehistoric shark
01:29 capable of destroying ocean liners. The first project earned more than $530 million at the
01:34 worldwide box office, so it's no surprise Warner Bros. decided to make a sequel.
01:39 In The Meg 2, The Trench, Statham's Jonas Taylor and his team are back, hunting for
01:43 giant sharks, despite the fact that it didn't go so well the first time.
01:47 "What happened last time?"
01:49 "You don't wanna know."
01:52 But The Meg isn't the only monster with ancient origins. It looks like we might also get to
01:56 see some of the other ancient creatures featured in Steve Alton's original novels. In addition
02:01 to Statham, the film's human cast includes Wu Jing, Sergio Perez Manchetta, Sienna Guillory,
02:06 Skylar Samuels, and Shuya Sophia Kai.
02:09 Ben Wheatley directed the film, which began production in January 2022. As such, you won't
02:15 have to wait long to see the biggest sharks known to man on your screens. The blockbuster
02:19 will premiere on August 4, 2023.
02:22 It can be hard to keep track of all the films James Wan has had his hand in, so we'll break
02:26 it down for you. In addition to co-creating Saw and Insidious, he's also responsible for
02:31 The Conjuring. That franchise has been extremely successful, spawning eight movies so far,
02:37 including two spin-off series. The second of those, The Nun, premiered in 2018. Though
02:42 it was critically panned, The Nun is actually the highest-grossing film in The Conjuring
02:46 universe, making an impressive $365 million at the box office. So a sequel is to be expected.
02:53 The first movie is set in 1952 in Romania, and follows a nun named Sister Irene, played
02:58 by Thaisa Farmiga, as she fights off a demonic figure known as Valak. Farmiga will reprise
03:03 her role in The Nun 2, which details her second encounter with Valak after a priest is killed.
03:08 Rounding out the cast are Storm Reid, Anna Popowel, and Caitlin Rose Downey. The film
03:13 was written by Akayla Cooper, a rising star who wrote Malignant and Megan. The sequel
03:18 hits theaters on September 8, 2023.
03:21 The Exorcist is one of the most iconic horror films of all time, but it has a complicated
03:25 history with sequels. The first, The Exorcist 2 The Heretic, was so bad that Exorcist director
03:31 William Freakin called it the, quote, "worst piece of s--- I've ever seen." In 1990, another
03:36 sequel, The Exorcist 3, acted as a follow-up to the original story, completely disregarding
03:41 the events of The Heretic. Written and directed by Exorcist author William Peter Blatty, the
03:46 film was slightly better received than its predecessor upon release, although more recent
03:50 reappraisals have been much kinder. Two poorly received prequels were released in 2004 and
03:55 2005.
03:57 And that brings us to today. The Exorcist Believer is not a new entry in the established
04:01 continuity per se, but rather a legacy reboot, much like the recent Halloween films. It'll
04:06 arrive in theaters on October 13.
04:08 "What an excellent day for an exorcism."
04:11 Leslie Odom Jr. leads alongside Ellen Burstyn, who reprises her role from the original film.
04:16 Upping the stakes considerably, the film follows not one, but two girls who are possessed by
04:20 demonic forces. Lydia Jewett and Olivia Markham play school friends who go missing in the
04:25 woods and return several days later, behaving strangely. While the trailer for the movie
04:30 has yet to be officially released, viewers who saw it were reportedly terrified. Universal
04:34 is certainly banking on audiences flocking to the theaters to see the film, as they dropped
04:38 an astounding $400 million on what'll end up being a trilogy.
04:42 The upcoming Saw film will be the series' tenth, making it one of the longest-running
04:46 horror franchises of all time. Saw X comes out on October 27, 2023, just in time for
04:53 Halloween. The movie is directed by Kevin Grutert, who helmed Saw VI and Saw The Final
04:58 Chapter. Shawnee Smith and Tobin Bell return for the tenth chapter, with Cinema Makoti
05:03 Lund, Stephen Brand, and Michael Beach joining them.
05:06 Producers have yet to share anything about the film's plot, although Lionsgate has released
05:10 a statement regarding its production. The return of Tobin Bell to the franchise furthers
05:14 Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures' goal of a film that captures everything Saw fans love
05:18 about the franchise, while also keeping them guessing with all-new traps and a new mystery
05:22 to solve.
05:23 We'll just have to wait until October to see which of our greatest nightmares will
05:27 be realized.
05:30 Film producer and Bloody Disgusting founder Ben Misca came up with a brilliant idea when
05:34 he created the VHS franchise. Each film in the series is composed of several found-footage
05:39 horror shorts directed by different filmmakers, often mixing up-and-coming talents with more
05:43 established directors. So far, there have been five movies in the series, as well as
05:48 two spin-offs.
05:49 Shudder revealed in 2022 that VHS 94 was its biggest streaming premiere up to that point.
05:55 Naturally, a sixth film is on its way, although VHS 85 will take the series back in time rather
06:01 than forward. The new film will feature segments from Scott Derrickson, David Bruckner, Gigi
06:06 Saul Guerrero, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson. We don't have a specific air date
06:10 yet, but Shudder says that the movie will be released sometime in 2023.
06:15 Derrickson completed his segment in October of 2022, so there's a decent chance we'll
06:19 get to see the film this Halloween season.
06:21 In May 2022, 20th Century Studios announced that production had begun on The First Omen,
06:27 a prequel to the 1976 movie The Omen. The film marks the feature debut of Arkasha Stevenson,
06:32 a director best known for her work on Channel Zero, Legion, and Briarpatch. Stevenson wrote
06:37 the script alongside Tim Smith, who also serves as executive producer. The original 1976 film,
06:43 in which Gregory Peck played the lead role, is about an ambassador who suspects that his
06:47 five-year-old son is the embodiment of the Antichrist.
06:56 It proved popular with both critics and audiences, and spawned several sequels over the years.
07:01 A reboot starring Liev Schreiber, Julia Stiles, and David Thewlis was made in 2006. The First
07:06 Omen's cast includes Nell Tiger-Free, who recently starred in the M. Night Shyamalan
07:10 series Servant, Bill Nighy, and Ralph Einousen. Plot details for the film have been kept under
07:15 wraps, and no release date has been issued. But in January 2023, Free told The Hollywood
07:21 Reporter that filming had concluded, and that she hopes The First Omen will come out sometime
07:25 this year.
07:26 Though Ty West's first feature film came out in 2005, it wasn't until 2022 that he really
07:31 made his presence known outside of the horror world. That year, West released two movies,
07:36 X and Pearl, that take place in the same universe. X, which was released first, stars Mia Goth
07:42 as an aspiring adult film star in the late 70s, who travels with her boyfriend and a
07:45 group of fellow actors to a farmstead in rural Texas to make a porn film. While there, they
07:51 encounter a menacing old woman named Pearl, who Goth also plays. Goth portrayed that character
07:56 again in Pearl, which is set in 1918, and tells the woman's origin story.
08:02 Fans are now looking forward to the final film in the X trilogy, Maxine. The movie is
08:06 set several years after the events of X, with Goth's character Maxine living in Los Angeles.
08:12 It's 1985, and she's looking to make it big in Hollywood. Maxine is the only survivor
08:17 of the murders that took the lives of her friends, so Goth is joined by a new cast - Halsey,
08:22 Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Giancarlo
08:27 Esposito, and Kevin Bacon.
08:29 A24 released a production still of Goth and Halsey walking down the street in Los Angeles.
08:34 An accompanying Twitter caption reads, "The life she deserves." The film began shooting
08:39 in April and should be released sometime in 2024.
08:42 Thanks to a hilariously strange marketing campaign and a trailer that went viral, Megan
08:47 became an unlikely smash hit earlier this year, raking in $176 million on a bargain
08:52 $12 million budget. Megan became something of an icon among horror and non-horror fans
08:58 alike, capturing the attention of internet memers everywhere. Voracious fans will be
09:02 delighted to hear that it isn't the last time we'll see everyone's favorite killer
09:06 doll.
09:07 Jason Blum, whose company produced the film alongside James Wan's Atomic Monster, has
09:11 announced plans for a sequel. The second movie will be written by Akayla Cooper, who penned
09:15 the original, and will see the return of Alison Williams and Violet McGraw, who miraculously
09:19 survived the events of the first film. Jason Blum told Empire that, while plans are underway,
09:25 they don't want to hurry things.
09:26 "The creative process suffers when you rush. You pretend you're not making compromises,
09:30 but you always do. So I wanted to give us enough time to make the movie great, and we
09:34 have that now."
09:35 That being said, a release date has already been set for January 17, 2025. That'll give
09:41 the Megan 2.0 marketing team plenty of time to come up with an even wilder video for the
09:45 internet to latch onto.
09:47 In October 2022, Deadline announced that the fourth main film in The Conjuring series was
09:51 underway. Screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who wrote the previous two movies in the series,
09:57 will pen the script for this latest installment.
10:00 Conjuring creator James Wan returns as a producer, with series stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick
10:04 Wilson reprising their roles.
10:06 "I think it's about time they accept the existence of the devil."
10:09 No director has been announced yet, but Wan spoke with Collider and reassured fans they
10:14 are treating the project with care. He said,
10:16 "With The Conjuring films, we are very precious about them, and so we kind of want to just
10:20 take our time. We just want to make sure that it's the right thing, the right story that
10:24 we're telling."
10:25 Wan also said The Conjuring films are potentially "wrapping up," indicating Last Rites could
10:30 be the last entry in the mainline series, though perhaps not in the Conjuring universe.
10:35 Five years passed between the release of the second and third Conjuring movies. Here's
10:38 hoping it doesn't take quite that long again.
10:41 It feels like just yesterday that the Alien series made its return to the big screen,
10:46 but the Hollywood production train never stops.
10:49 According to 20th Century Studios, the newest franchise film will follow a group of young
10:53 people on a distant world who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying
10:57 life form in the universe.
10:59 That description tells us next to nothing, considering that's the plot of almost every
11:03 Alien movie thus far. The film is led by Kayleigh Spaney, who stars alongside David Johnson,
11:08 Archie Renaud, Isabella Merced, and Spike Fearn.
11:12 Filming began earlier this year in Budapest with Fede Alvarez, who previously directed
11:15 The Girl on the Spider's Web, Don't Breathe, and 2013's Evil Dead, writing, directing,
11:20 and producing. The most recent installment in the franchise, 2017's Alien Covenant, was
11:24 directed by series creator Ridley Scott, who returns as an executive producer for this
11:29 film.
11:30 Alien Romulus is set to hit theaters on August 16, 2024.
