Madonna's 'Sex' photos go to auction for the first time at Christie's
Prints of Madonna's 'Sex' photos from her 1992 coffee table book will be auctioned at Christie's.
Over 40 prints will be available for purchase, each signed by Madonna and photographer Steven Meisel.
Prices range from $50,000 to $300,000, with proceeds going to Madonna's nonprofit, Raising Malawi.
"'Sex' is still somewhat controversial, but it still reads as a very body-positive, sex-positive book," says Darius Himes, Christie's deputy chairman.
The book caused a worldwide commotion in the 1990s, featuring Madonna and others in the nude.
It was banned in countries like Ireland and Japan, but sold over 1.5 million copies.
The selected photographs capture a moment in time and will be displayed in London, Paris, and New York before the auction.
Madonna faced backlash for empowering herself as a woman and expressing her sexuality.
She defended herself, saying, "We're always operating and living under the male gaze."
Madonna's 'Sex' photos are not her only controversial foray into art.
Last year, she released NFTs depicting her giving birth to creatures like butterflies and centipedes.
The auction of Madonna's 'Sex' photos is a unique opportunity to own a piece of controversial art history.
