Camilo Laso Ojeda & Víctor Mansilla Subiabre's Fatal Crash @ Puerto Natales 2003
A fatal accident that resulted in the deaths of two spectators, took place during the 22nd edition of the Tres Horas de Puerto Natales, an asphalt and gravel mixed road race held on the Circuito Dorotea at Puerto Natales, the capital of the Province of Ultima Esperanza, in the Region of Magallanes, Chile, on Saturday 01 November 2003.
The Lada Samara driven by Argentinean team Ricardo Willer-Carlos Andrade went off the road and hit a group of spectators. One of them, 30-year-old Camilo Laso Ojeda was killed upon impact, other seven persons including the driver of the car, were hospitalized.
The injured people were Adán Mancilla, Pedro Álvarez, Juan Luis Torres, Carlos Santana, Carmen Alarcon, Claudia Sánchez and Víctor Mansilla Subiabre. The latter succumbed to his injuries at the Hospital Regional de Punta Arenas the following day. He was 19 years old.
The speed of the cars and the conditions of the track, since this race was disputed mainly on a gravel road circuit, and also the imprudence of spectators, caused the accident. Ricardo Willer was accused of homicide and injuries.
70 racers from Chile and Argentina were entered in the race, in five different categories. The Lada Samara of Ricardo Willer-Carlos Andrade was a Categoría "B" car (from 1051 to 1400 cm3).
Six years later, another fatality marred the Tres Horas de Puerto Natales road race, when the female spectator Ester Márquez Levicán was struck and killed by a competitor, on 31 October 2009.
