00:00 Nightly greetings everyone.
00:06 I am William Thio and this is PTV News Now.
00:09 Booming bomb blasts and columns of dark billowing smoke filled the air in and around Gaza and
00:15 Israeli fighter jets pounded Palestine's most populous enclave from Monday evening all into
00:21 the night and this morning with hundreds of airstrikes targeting terrorist hubs.
00:27 In a statement, the IDF said it has struck hundreds of targets from the air in Ramal
00:32 and Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip, claiming without proof all the areas are terror hubs
00:38 Hamas has been using and that a large number of attacks on Israel are being directed from
00:44 there.
00:45 The IDF is committed to make good on its vow to completely eliminate the terrorist group
00:49 and machinery known as Hamas from Gaza.
00:53 Then again, Israel's mission to lay complete siege on Gaza to annihilate Hamas is prohibited
00:59 under United Nations law, the UN Human Rights Chief said Tuesday.
01:05 Meanwhile Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said earlier today that democracy has flourished
01:11 in her country despite all pressures from China to disparage or downplay Taiwan's government
01:17 and state of affairs and vowed Taiwan would remain free for generations to come.
01:23 In a nation-day speech, she said it was her duty to safeguard the democratic and free
01:29 way of life for her 23 million constituents.
01:33 Tsai, who is in her final year in office, stressed peace is the only option with China
01:39 and waxed in a more conciliatory tone, saying Taiwan seeks free, unrestricted and unburdened
01:46 interactions with people from across the strait.
01:50 Since her rise to power in 2016, relations with Beijing have gone south due to her staunch
01:56 adherence to democracy and her refusal to accept that Taiwan belongs to China.
02:03 Expectedly, China's propaganda machine pushed back on Tsai's speech and accused her and
02:09 her Democratic Progressive Party of being the biggest threat to peace.
02:14 Meanwhile, the last two legs of a U.S. senatorial tour of Asia have been canceled.
02:20 Washington, D.C.'s embassy in Tokyo said Sunday.
02:23 An embassy spokesperson told Agence France-Presse the South Korea visit was also canceled, but
02:32 refused to elaborate on the details of the so-called external events.
02:36 The cancellation comes at the heels of deteriorating developments in the Holy Land, where a war
02:42 has been declared by Israel against the terrorist group Hamas for their brutal and savage assaults
02:48 against Israeli civilians over the weekend and for the deaths of 11 other Americans as
02:54 a result of those attacks.
02:58 At this moment, we hand it over to Ala Sungduan in our Baguio News Studios for the latest
03:03 in the Cordilleras.
