00:00 This book is awesome, another incredible book
00:02 that you've put out.
00:03 Talk to me about the inspiration and how
00:05 you dreamed up "Rosie Frost and the Falcon Queen."
00:09 Well, first of all, thank you so much for having me on the show.
00:13 I love writing, and I love books.
00:17 And I've always found a lot of comfort in reading.
00:22 And I just thought, well, I think
00:24 the world needs a new hero.
00:26 And I'm always character-led.
00:27 And I thought someone ordinary and vulnerable.
00:31 And so I started with that.
00:35 And then I always like to have adventure,
00:39 but then maybe have a little something else in there.
00:42 And I started it--
00:44 how many years ago?
00:46 Nine years ago.
00:48 And it was like a baptism of fire
00:50 to learn how to write a big novel.
00:54 But I always like to put characters that you can relate to.
00:59 So yeah, you're going to meet the characters.
01:02 America will.
01:03 I love America as well, the optimism of America.
01:07 I don't think I would be where I am today
01:10 if it wasn't for America.
01:11 I was brought up on your television.
01:13 Well, you have a huge fan base already.
01:16 And I really resonated with a lot of the messages in the book.
01:20 And her internal thoughts, the wisdom
01:24 from her mom and just the be strong,
01:26 don't let them see your weakness,
01:28 that really resonated with me.
01:30 Who was Rosie Frost inspired by in your life?
01:33 Or was she inspired by you?
01:34 I kind of see the resemblance here.
01:35 OK, the red.
01:37 Well, when you write, sometimes you write about what you know.
01:41 And there are sort of quite adult themes in there.
01:45 And this book is for everyone, whether you're 10, 20, 30, 40,
01:50 50, it's for everyone.
01:51 And I went through grief when I was young.
01:54 And so there are touches of grief.
01:56 She's orphaned.
01:57 And she's looking at that.
01:59 But also trying to find your power.
02:04 When you're up against the odds, I
02:05 think that's how you find out who you are.
02:08 And it's set on Bloodstone Island,
02:10 which is like a Jurassic Park for endangered animals.
02:14 And she's up against mean girls, these series of challenges.
02:20 And she's asking herself questions,
02:22 and finding friendship.
02:24 And it's all those things that you can relate to.
02:27 But the backdrop, it also has--
02:30 which I love history.
02:31 It's set in modern times.
02:33 But the school that she's sent to
02:35 is built by Queen Elizabeth I in honor of her mother, Anne Boleyn.
02:41 So I don't know if you know much about Tudor times.
02:44 And Henry VIII, he was married six times.
02:47 And he had six wives.
02:47 And the second wife, Anne Boleyn, he cut her head off.
02:51 You threw some history in there.
02:52 Yeah, I threw some history in there.
02:54 And so this school is built by Queen Elizabeth I
02:57 in honor of her mother, Anne Boleyn, who was really smart.
03:00 And so it sort of had those values in there.
03:02 If you want it, there's a little bit of English history.
03:05 Well, it's very relatable as a whole, especially
03:07 these characters.
03:09 You posted this sweet moment of when
03:11 you found out that your story was being published, which
03:14 I loved watching that moment.
03:15 And you said your family's also very excited
03:18 because you disappeared into a shed for nine years.
03:22 Well, writing is quite time consuming.
03:27 And it was like Rosie, she was like another human in my life,
03:31 another child.
03:33 And I'd have to go off for chunks of time writing her.
03:38 And so to finally give birth to her and reveal her to the world
03:43 is a dream come true.
03:45 What it taught me is that never give up on your dreams.
03:49 You can try different things in life.
03:52 So to have the chance and opportunity
03:54 to share something that I love with the world,
03:57 America that gave me so much, this
03:59 is sort of my gift to you back.
04:01 I feel like we're cousins.
04:03 Does that make sense?
04:04 You've pulled me over the wall, and I want to give this to you.
04:07 There's something in there.
04:10 There's four rules in there.
04:12 So when Anne Boleyn knew she was going to be executed,
04:16 she left this little book for Queen Elizabeth I.
04:19 She was only three.
04:21 She gives her four rules.
04:22 And then Queen Elizabeth I uses these four rules
04:25 and becomes the greatest monarch of her time.
04:28 This rule book is given to Rosie, modern time.
04:31 With those four rules, she uses it
04:33 to face challenges herself, like bullies,
04:37 all sorts of challenges.
04:38 But you can use those four rules in your life,
04:41 which I hope the reader goes, yeah.
04:44 So the rules I want to share with you, one was to have
04:47 courage.
04:48 So go for what you want.
04:50 The other one is united we stand, like I need you,
04:52 you need me.
04:53 The third one is never give up.
04:56 And the fourth is be yourself.
05:00 To thine own self be true.
05:02 And if you don't like these rules, make up your own.
05:05 Golden rules.
05:06 They're golden rules.
05:06 I love it.
05:08 I want to show you this.
05:09 We talked about red hair earlier.
05:11 And your son, who I know is going
05:12 to learn a lot from this book.
05:14 I love that he has the red hair.
05:16 Is he adopting the nickname Ginger Spice as well?
05:19 Are you passing that down?
05:21 It's funny.
05:22 I feel very proud.
05:24 We're all proud of our children.
05:26 And to see him with the golden locks is beautiful.
05:29 And it's a gift.
05:32 Yeah, he's certainly in his own lane.
05:35 He loves Celine Dion and Lego.
05:38 That's really cute.
05:40 He likes My Heart Will Go On.
05:42 Well, he's very smart.
05:44 And he's got a musical ear.
05:46 There's music in the book.
05:47 Yeah, you're bringing it all to us.
05:49 I'm bringing it all to you.
05:51 Most people may not know that you're also
05:53 married to a race car driver, Formula One guy for Red Bull.
05:57 Yeah, he runs the Red Bull racing team.
06:00 He's the team principal.
06:01 I absolutely love that.
06:02 It's such a fun fact.
06:03 And I see you go to the races, which is awesome.
06:06 Yes, actually.
06:08 OK, so we all know we all want to please our family.
06:11 And they're the hardest to impress.
06:13 Christian, he never reads.
06:17 And he was like, OK, I'll read your book when it's done,
06:20 when it's going to be published.
06:22 So he's read it.
06:23 Oh, that's sweet.
06:24 Yeah.
06:25 See, he supports you, just like you go to the races.
06:27 Yeah, yes.
06:28 And he said to me, he went, yeah,
06:30 I couldn't stop page turning.
06:32 I wanted to find out what happened next.
06:34 I was rather pleased.
06:36 You got hubby's approval.
06:37 Yeah, I got his approval.
06:38 We're all excited for Vegas, by the way.
06:40 Oh my god, it's amazing.
06:41 It's going to be fun.
06:43 There's also a race in Austin.
06:45 And I have to say, it's my favorite race
06:48 on the whole calendar.
06:49 I love Texas.
06:51 Well, we'll see you at both, right?
06:52 Yeah, you'll see me at both.
06:55 Well, we can't wait.
06:56 I mentioned Ginger Spice.
06:57 It's been 25 years since you were part of the Spice Girls.
07:01 Your message, even today, is still girl power.
07:04 Absolutely.
07:04 You're so empowering.
07:05 And I love that you all came together for your 50th birthday
07:08 last year.
07:09 Oh, it's so nice.
07:10 What is the glue that keeps you all together?
07:13 I think it's--
07:14 OK, so if you went to university or school,
07:16 you have some school friends.
07:18 And your lives might take different directions.
07:21 But then there's always that connection.
07:23 And I think we have motherhood now in common,
07:26 which is beautiful.
07:27 I feel so proud of them individually.
07:30 They're all amazing people.
07:33 So yeah, we'll always have--
07:35 there's a lot of respect and support there.
07:36 It's really nice.
07:37 It's a friendship for life.
07:39 Yeah.
07:39 Is there a group chat?
07:40 Is there someone who's reaching out, planning the dinners
07:43 and the get-togethers?
07:44 There's definitely a group chat, which is rather nice.
07:47 I love that.
07:47 Yeah.
07:48 Cell phones are amazing.
07:51 You've got to tell us.
07:52 You've been teasing us for years.
07:54 Is there going to be a reunion any time soon?
07:57 You know, I love being with the girls, at some point,
08:02 but I don't know when.
08:03 For me, I really like to focus on each thing as it comes.
08:07 And right now, the child I've got
08:09 in my life that needs the most attention is Rosie Frost.
08:12 So I'm sort of like--
08:13 it's like having a baby, and she needs--
08:15 or going off to school.
08:17 So I'm sort of launching her off into the world
08:19 and making she's all right.
08:20 She's my focus.
08:22 You know, at some point, I'm sure we'll do something.
08:24 I mean, NSYNC, they came together.
08:27 That's lovely, isn't it?
08:29 You know, I saw them very early, early days once.
08:33 And they sang to me in an airport.
08:37 This was before they were-- and they were amazing.
08:39 They sang in beautiful harmony.
08:41 You're probably one of the only people who will ever say they
08:43 can experience something like that.
08:44 Yeah, I got an a cappella version of them.
08:47 Good luck to them.
08:48 That's so nice.
08:49 That's amazing.
08:49 Well, come on.
08:50 It's time for you guys, too.
08:51 The Beckham doc is coming out.
08:53 Yes.
08:54 And there's a moment in the trailer where Victoria says
08:56 that they used to meet up secretly.
08:58 And you were there from the very beginning.
09:00 What do you remember about that time?
09:02 What do I remember?
09:03 Do you know what?
09:04 I-- what did I say?
09:06 I think I was very much about girl code.
09:09 So I was like, you know, it was all about the girl first.
09:14 And so it was like, for me, it was dreams before dates.
09:18 And so I'd be like quite protective and, you know,
09:22 suspicious and protective of my girlfriends.
09:25 They're like sisters.
09:26 It doesn't really matter who it is.
09:28 But, you know, Dave is like a brother.
09:30 And I care for him and her greatly.
09:33 So--
09:34 Well, I'm glad to see her so happy
09:35 and that it worked out for her long term.
09:37 Yeah, she's a really good person.
09:38 There are a couple of goals, no doubt.
09:40 Yes.
09:41 We want to do something fun with you,
09:43 because you are a fashion icon.
09:46 I know your fashion's a little different now today.
09:48 But we want to take a trip down memory lane
09:50 and show you some looks from back
09:53 in the day during your prime.
09:56 What do you remember about this?
09:57 OK, so that was the American Music Awards.
10:02 Yeah, VMAs.
10:03 I knew it was VMAs.
10:04 Apologies.
10:04 That was the VMAs.
10:06 And I'll tell you why I did that was because I'd just
10:08 done the Brits.
10:09 And I'd stitched like a flag to a little Gucci dress.
10:13 And I thought, do you know what?
10:15 I love America.
10:16 And, you know, as I said, our cousins,
10:19 I want to celebrate America too.
10:21 And so this was like tribute to America.
10:24 Although the makeup, one might say, is a little bit heavy.
10:27 And at the time, I went, you know when you have that feeling?
10:30 And I was so young.
10:31 And I went, does this look all right?
10:33 And yeah.
10:34 You owned it.
10:35 It looked amazing.
10:36 Kevin Akon.
10:37 He's a famous makeup artist.
10:38 I was like, yeah.
10:40 Well, that's a great one.
10:42 Let's talk about-- oh, hold up.
10:44 Coming back to that one.
10:46 Hold on.
10:46 We've got a lot going on here.
10:48 Let's see.
10:48 Let's do this one.
10:49 Ah, that was in Los Angeles.
10:55 That was the premiere of Spice Girls.
10:57 Yes, the movie.
10:58 Yeah, so everyone's in white.
11:00 Hello.
11:00 I love the matching.
11:01 Yeah.
11:02 And there's something-- do you know what?
11:03 You love white.
11:04 Yeah.
11:05 There's something interesting about when
11:07 people dress the same.
11:09 It's sort of-- it's quite unifying.
11:11 It's quite nice.
11:13 Brings you all together.
11:14 It brings you all together.
11:15 Kind of helps you feel more confident.
11:16 Yeah, absolutely.
11:17 Yeah.
11:17 All right, let's see what have we got here.
11:20 This one.
11:21 Again.
11:21 See, here again is tribute to another American icon, Elvis.
11:28 We were in Las Vegas.
11:30 And do you know what?
11:31 I loved Elvis when I was a child.
11:33 Oh, yeah.
11:33 I used to watch all of his movies.
11:35 Who didn't?
11:36 Yeah, so that was like my thank you very much.
11:38 You and your white.
11:39 I love it for you.
11:39 Yes, still in white.
11:40 It's a great color on you.
11:41 This one.
11:42 Red.
11:43 OK, this.
11:44 So this was at the Brit Awards.
11:46 And it was our first big awards ceremony.
11:50 And I remember this, because I used to make my own clothes.
11:54 And this was because I studied textiles.
11:57 Did you make this?
11:58 Yeah, I designed it.
12:00 And my sister helped me with the sewing machine.
12:02 But the structure of it wasn't all there.
12:04 But I was like, it was a tribute to Jessica Rabbit.
12:08 Do you remember that movie?
12:10 That was that.
12:11 Oh my gosh, it's so much fun.
12:12 It looks great with your hair.
12:14 Thank you.
12:14 You really got the red going there.
12:16 And I mean, again, we love the flags.
12:18 This was Brit Awards as well.
12:19 Yes, and that was--
12:20 you know, actually, America is very patriotic.
12:24 Again, it's those values to be really proud of who you are.
12:27 That's America.
12:28 And that optimism, and never be ashamed of that.
12:31 And actually, so-- and this reminds
12:34 me to be true to yourself.
12:35 Because someone said, don't wear a flag.
12:39 They was going, no, that's not appropriate.
12:42 And for me, all I did was stitch that
12:44 onto a little Gucci--
12:46 it was like a '50s swimming costume.
12:47 So that all had the structure.
12:49 Did you stitch it yourself?
12:50 A little bit.
12:51 I went and got that.
12:52 You sewed DIY.
12:53 I totally DIY'd.
12:54 That's a tea towel to find the flag to fit.
12:57 And those boots, do you know what I did?
13:00 I got car spray and sprayed the boots.
13:03 I love that.
13:04 You had so much fun with that.
13:05 I'm very DIY.
13:06 Very DIY.
13:07 Do you still have any of these in your closet?
13:09 Actually, do you know what?
13:10 You can see that dress at the Hard Rock Cafe.
13:15 It got sold for charity.
13:17 Because I thought, come on, let's just upcycle.
13:21 And so they bought it.
13:23 So you can see it in America.
13:25 It's amazing.
13:25 So I have this iconic moment.
13:28 And my team loves this.
13:29 Because we're like, forget Prince Charles.
13:31 You've got Jennifer Aniston.
13:33 Jennifer Aniston.
13:34 We love her.
13:35 What was going on here?
13:37 I think she was smirking.
13:39 We love Jennifer.
13:40 She's amazing.
13:41 Obsessed.
13:42 Yes.
13:42 She's gorgeous, isn't she?
13:44 Yeah, that was a real treat to meet her.
13:47 She is kind of your American sweetheart.
13:49 She really is.
13:50 She really is.
13:51 Yeah, we love her.
13:52 And she's still going as an actress.
13:55 Yeah, she is almost as Falcon Queen.
13:59 Falcon Queen is someone that really
14:01 has that courage, determination.
14:03 I mean, you have many.
14:05 You've got Oprah.
14:06 You've got Eleanor Roosevelt. You've got Marilyn.
14:09 Jennifer.
14:10 Why not?
14:11 I have a special message for you from an old friend
14:17 that we just got.
14:19 All right, so I'll let you hit play there.
14:23 I haven't actually read the book yet.
14:24 Because she's been keeping it under lock and key.
14:26 So we'll see.
14:27 I'm sure it's going to be amazing.
14:29 Do you want to give a little message to Jerry here?
14:30 I know you haven't spoke to--
14:31 Jerry, you're crazy.
14:32 Stop wearing white.
14:35 It is a pleasure talking to you.
14:37 She's amazing.
14:38 I mean, stop wearing white.
14:39 She knows you too well, doesn't she?
14:41 Yeah, she's amazing.
14:42 I'm really proud of her.
14:44 I mean, she's an excellent judge on that show.
14:47 Yeah, she's doing AGT now.
14:49 Yeah, and she's got a huge heart and determination.
14:51 I love her.
14:53 [MUSIC PLAYING]
14:56 [MUSIC PLAYING]
15:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
15:03 (upbeat music)
