00:00 The 21-year-old really has spent much of her adult life fighting for the rights of women
00:06 in Iran, but also overall fighting for human rights in Iran.
00:12 She has been also a huge advocate talking against, or for, if you will, the abolition
00:19 of the death penalty in the country.
00:22 So really a broad spectrum of human rights.
00:25 And this has, as we heard, brought her a lot of trouble, and she has spent the past two
00:31 decades in and out of prison.
00:34 The first time she was arrested was 22 years ago.
00:38 Now her latest stint in prison started back in November 2021.
00:43 She has been, she's now serving a sentence of 10 years and nine months.
00:49 So you really see that she has dedicated her life to this cause, really giving up a lot,
00:57 giving up her whole family life, her husband and two kids who are teenagers, that she hasn't
01:04 seen in years.
01:05 And really this has been why she has become such a face of this movement in Iran.
01:12 But of course, she has become one of the faces of this movement because there are hundreds
01:18 and thousands of people who have been working and fighting for women's rights in Iran.
01:25 And she has really continued to be active in her activism, even behind bars, sending
01:35 out videos, audios to journalists, and even writing just recently an op-ed in the New
01:42 York Times entitled "The more of us they lock up, the stronger we become."
