00:00 Hello and welcome to Latest TV News. My name is Jacob Pannins, I'm a reporter for Sussex
00:20 World and I'm going to be speaking with sports reporter Sam Morton about Brighton's
00:24 shocking 6-1 loss against Aston Villa as well as their upcoming fixtures against Marseille
00:29 and Liverpool. But first, here are your top stories from across the county.
00:35 Some businesses along a major road in Eastbourne have raised concerns about a proposed bus
00:39 lane. The lane would run from east of Gilbert Road to Langley Rise roundabout in both directions
00:44 on Seaside and St Anthony's Avenue in a bid to improve journey times. A public consultation
00:50 closed on Monday, September 25th, but some staff from businesses along Seaside have questioned
00:55 the proposal. DB Domestics line manager for the Spares, Repairs and Small Appliance department
01:00 Steph Walter said if approved the plan would have a "massively detrimental effect" on
01:05 its customers and its day-to-day running of the business. Janet Denny from Chipperfields
01:10 Florist also raised concerns about where customers, staff and delivery drivers will park. Eastbourne
01:16 technical repairs owner Saeed Rahmani said he was shocked to hear about the plans and
01:20 questioned why local companies were not told about the proposals, while retail manager
01:25 from Kylie's Carpets, Lewis Sams, said although he is neither for or against the proposal,
01:30 he could not see the benefits. East Sussex County Council explained that following an
01:34 analysis of the consultation feedback, a decision will be made on which schemes are taken forward
01:39 for further design and construction. Fencing has been placed around the courtyard
01:44 on Hastings Seafront after a 21-year-old man died following a fall. The ambulance service
01:50 confirmed the fatal fall happened at the venue in White Rock at around 12.45am on Wednesday,
01:55 September 20th. Police and paramedics attended and the ambulance service said the man died
02:00 at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances behind the incident,
02:06 but they are not believed to be suspicious, according to police.
02:10 A famous manor in Sussex has been listed for sale, with the current owners looking for
02:14 offers of around ÂŁ10m. Folkington Manor near Poulgate in East Sussex was listed on Zopla
02:21 with the help of Knight & Frank on Monday, September 18th. The seven-bedroom property,
02:25 which is a Grade II-listed English Historic House, is a family home to famous physician
02:31 Harry Brugess, as well as his wife Jackie, who is a singer, dancer and choreographer.
02:36 Folkington Manor, which was built in 1843, is set over 85 acres of land, landscape gardens,
02:42 lakes and woods. The site was used as a location in the 1948 film of the George Moore novel
02:48 Esther Waters and has also featured on Channel 4's Come Dine With Me and was a pet training
02:53 school in the ITV series Teach My Pet To Do That, which was hosted by Alexander Armstrong.
02:59 The manor is also mentioned in the book Violet, The Life and Loves of Violet Gordon Woodhouse
03:04 by Jessica Douglas-Holme. The property has six reception rooms, a new kitchen/breakfast
03:09 room, seven bedrooms and five bathrooms.
03:14 A village in East Sussex has been labelled as the best in the country by a national newspaper's
03:19 senior travel writer. On September 5th, Greg Dickinson published a story on The Telegraph's
03:24 website titled 'There are 6,000 villages in the UK and this one is the best' and
03:29 he praised Alfriston by Drusilla's Park. The writer said his starting criteria for
03:34 finding the best UK village was that it must have a historic pub, a great place to stay
03:39 and eat, a national park on its doorstep and the coast nearby. Secondary criteria was that
03:45 the village should have independent shops, a proper village green, a tea room, a National
03:50 Trust property, galleries, a river and a nature reserve nearby. Mr Dickinson said Alfriston
03:57 was the clear winner and he also praised the South Downs National Park, Rathveni Wine Estate
04:02 and the nearby coastline.
04:03 Now let's hear from sports reporter Sam Morton as he tells us a bit more about Brighton's
04:07 surprising 6-1 loss at Aston Villa on the weekend.
04:10 I've got sports reporter Sam Morton with me here and we're going to be talking about
04:16 the shocking 6-1 loss that Brighton faced at the weekend. What happened Sam?
04:21 Pretty much a disaster from start to finish for Brighton at the weekend really. Obviously
04:25 it was a surprise one. We knew it would be a close game, we thought it would be a close
04:28 game against a strong side in Aston Villa. Both teams were going into the game obviously
04:33 confident that they could win. To high-class managers we knew it would be a tactical battle
04:41 really and Emery absolutely came out on top really. I think De Serby got it slightly wrong
04:47 in certain areas and it was a surprise to see Brighton so open and so easy to play against
04:54 it, which is so different to what we've come to expect from Brighton. Aston Villa didn't
04:58 really almost have to get out of second or third gear to even score. They were 3-0 up
05:02 after 25 minutes and it was a disastrous start to the game really. Brighton seemed to think
05:07 everything was going wrong for them. It was summed up when Estefanian put it into his
05:11 own net when the ball was going wide and it just summed up the first half. It was a real
05:17 shock and hopefully Brighton won't let that linger on their minds too long and they can
05:21 bounce back.
05:22 Where did it all go wrong for Brighton?
05:26 Pretty much defensively it was all wrong. I think they didn't have enough protection
05:31 I don't think in front. I think obviously Kai Sedo leaving in the summer was obviously
05:35 a big concern because he was so important last season. I think they've not really noticed
05:40 it in the first few games where they've dominated the ball and they've not missed his presence
05:45 as much. But against Aston Villa when they were really up against it and everything was
05:49 going against them you kind of needed someone like that to take control of the ball and
05:53 to protect the defence that was struggling early in the game. They really lacked that.
05:57 I think they had Billy Gilmore and Jack Hinchlewood making his first ever Premier League start
06:02 and it was a real baptism of fire for him really. They're very good players on the ball
06:06 but maybe not physically dominant and they couldn't really take control of the midfield
06:12 and deal with what Aston Villa were, the threats they were posing really. It was a difficult
06:18 game to say the least and obviously they were ruthlessly beaten in the end and it just seemed
06:23 to be a matter of how many goals Aston Villa would get as the game was closing out.
06:28 Yeah definitely and obviously Aston Villa are a great side but Brighton have had these
06:31 wobbles in the past. They lost to West Ham 3-1 at the start of the season at home, one
06:35 game that they probably should have won, they would have wanted to win. And then obviously
06:38 they lost 5-1 against relegation threat and Everton towards the end of last season. Do
06:42 you think there's a trend that teams may be picking up on of how to exploit the Zerbees
06:47 men?
06:48 I don't think it seems that way. Obviously it doesn't happen very often but every now
06:50 and then there seems to be these blips in the road. Obviously that Everton game last
06:55 season was bizarre. I think Everton were obviously really struggling and fighting for their lives
06:58 and suddenly they were thrashing in form Brighton in their own park. So it was real bizarre
07:04 and it was a similar feel to it, you just didn't really see it coming. It went wrong
07:08 so quickly and you think they just kept conceding goal after goal. It's one for the Zerbee to
07:14 ponder about really and work out what it needs to do to make sure it doesn't happen again.
07:18 They've got such a tough run of fixtures coming up now and that presents a good opportunity
07:22 to put things right. I think it probably plays into their hands that none of those teams
07:25 will sit back because I think obviously Brighton do tend to struggle against those kind of
07:29 teams. So hopefully they can get a few big wins in teams that are coming up, obviously
07:34 Marseille, Liverpool, Man City are the next three and it doesn't get any easier with
07:37 Ajax after that. So I think a great run of games to recover from that and to prove why
07:45 they were so highly rated before the Villa game.
07:48 And obviously before the Villa game as well they faced Chelsea in the League Cup and they
07:52 got knocked out there. After the game I was speaking to the Zerbee, they were very disappointed.
07:56 Do you think that maybe, obviously following the back of the Athens loss, do you think
08:00 it's maybe the reality has hit Brighton that they were in four competitions?
08:04 Yeah, well I think the Zerbee said after the Asta Villa game that the team's not ready
08:07 to compete in four competitions. You can kind of understand that but at the same time they
08:12 are rotating players every single game. I think they've made at least five changes in
08:17 nearly every game for the last couple of weeks. So you would think the players should be fresh
08:21 and they should be able to deal with the amount of games that are coming at them quite early
08:24 on in the season. I think you'd maybe understand if that was an excuse but later on when they've
08:28 been playing twice a week for months and months you can maybe understand that eventually that's
08:33 going to take its toll. It's still quite early on and the players are obviously fresh and
08:37 you wouldn't expect that to be too big of an issue yet. So yeah, I think it's about
08:42 finding his best team I think. At the moment he's not too sure. I think he's changed so
08:46 much that the striking position has changed every game and obviously the defence has changed
08:52 as well. We've had Lewis Dunk miss a couple of games for injury but even he wasn't himself
08:56 against Asta Villa. He didn't seem to have that same level of control over the defence
09:00 and I think the goalkeeper situation as well. It's kind of a controversial one. I think
09:06 some people like the fact that he's got two keepers that he can trust and he switches
09:10 every game. I'm kind of more leaning to the side of I think you need a first team keeper
09:14 that knows you're going to be playing and he's got that confidence. I think that always
09:17 helps the team I think. It'll be interesting to see going forward if De Servi does keep
09:23 switching between the keepers or if he's going to choose one for each competition maybe.
09:26 We'll see how that one goes.
09:28 I think I agree with you there. I think teams are better when you've got a stable number
09:32 one who knows they're playing. Going back and forth, it feels like neither goalkeeper
09:37 can really build up form because whenever they have a good performance they're taken
09:40 out and they're replaced with their rival. It's a bit of an awkward situation. Also,
09:45 do you think Hinshaw would come in against Villa? Do you think that was maybe a bit premature?
09:49 I think so. He's obviously a really young lad, 18 years old, and it was a really tough
09:53 game to throw him into straight away. We knew it was going to be a real tough battle against
09:58 Aston Villa in their own ground. Obviously, it was a real tough, tough afternoon for him.
10:04 I don't think he played too badly. I think the game kind of ran past him a little bit
10:08 and it was really difficult to impose his authority over it. He didn't really have a
10:13 commanding presence behind him like maybe Kayserdi could have brought.
10:15 Welcome back to part two. I've got Sam Morton with me here. Sam, Brighton have got Marseille
10:32 on Thursday. They've lost their first game against Athens. How important is it that they
10:36 get three points on the board?
10:37 Massively important. I think it's obviously up against the Marseille side that's really
10:41 struggling in the league. They're 12th place at the moment and they haven't won a game
10:45 in September and they've had a couple of damaging defeats lately. So, you're not the best of
10:52 starts for them. I think Brighton will be looking at that as an opportunity to get things
10:57 back on track in the Europa League. I think their little bit rabbit in headlights kind
11:01 of performance against Athens, a completely unknown situation for them. I think it didn't
11:06 help that they went into the game as arguably favourites in terms of their form and kind
11:11 of the up against a side that you'd expect them to beat. But then in the type of competition
11:16 it is, Brighton completely unknown, it shouldn't arguably have been favourites for that game.
11:20 I don't think that helps them. But I think this time they maybe can see it as a little
11:25 bit of an underdog situation. You're up against a huge European club, despite their form,
11:30 that know exactly how these kind of games work. So, I think they could play into Brighton's
11:33 hands really and they can really utilise their strengths. And not just in the context of
11:38 the Europa League, it's so important as well that they bounce back from the defeat against
11:42 Villa and the Carabao Cup exit at Chelsea as well. So, just to get things back on track
11:47 and to get the confidence going in the team again.
11:50 Yeah, and it must be also so important because they lost against Athens, lost against Chelsea,
11:54 lost against Villa and like you said earlier in the first half, they've got a lot of hard
11:58 games coming up. For their confidence, how do you think that might impact the morale
12:01 within the squad following a phenomenal start of the season?
12:04 Yeah, it's kind of at risk of unravelling all the good work almost. I think because
12:08 obviously they've not been able to buy a clean sheet so far this season. And even in games
12:12 that they've been winning convincingly, they seem to concede. Towards the end of the Man
12:16 United game, they were totally in control, scored the third goal and then they conceded
12:20 at the end. It's happened a couple of times this season, you almost felt like they needed
12:24 a clean sheet to build on and to improve the defensive situation as much as obviously it's
12:30 been great watching them going forward.
12:34 And yeah, I think they need to start getting those clean sheets and start to be a bit more
12:39 tight at the back. And I think that could be a really good way of building things up
12:44 again and trying to get their form back because against Aston Villa defensively, it just all
12:48 went completely wrong. And you just hope it doesn't take too much out of them confidence-wise
12:53 and they can still trust in their own ability to beat teams that you maybe expect them not
12:58 to. So yeah, I think Marseille is a good opportunity to do that and to really get the season back
13:02 on track.
13:03 And obviously going away to Marseille, the first away game that Brighton have got in
13:07 the Europa League this season, it's going to be quite an intimidating atmosphere. Obviously
13:11 the fans at Marseille are known for being quite boisterous and something that we don't
13:14 really experience in the Premier League. Do you think that might throw the team off a
13:18 little bit?
13:19 Yeah, time will tell. Again, it's completely unknown. It's something we've not seen Brighton
13:23 come up against. So it'll be really interesting to see how they cope under that kind of pressure.
13:27 It's difficult to predict either way really, but I think they've obviously had a few away
13:32 games recently and they've come out on top in some and obviously struggled in others.
13:37 So it'll be interesting to see under that kind of atmosphere how they cope. So it kind
13:42 of maybe does put them as a little bit of an underdog in that sense. Obviously everything's
13:45 going against them, up against, as you say, a really kind of boisterous crowd. So yeah,
13:51 really looking forward to seeing how they get on in that one.
13:54 Yeah, and obviously Marseille, like you said, hasn't had the best season, neither have Ajax
13:57 as well. Do you think that will give Brighton a little bit of confidence following that
14:01 disappointing loss that they can still progress out of this group?
14:03 Yeah, 100%. I think obviously, as I say, up against Athens it was a disappointing defeat,
14:08 but then you kind of see it as a bit of a kryptonite, those kind of teams that sit back
14:12 and try and stop you playing the way you want to play. And I think Brighton do naturally
14:17 struggle against those kind of teams. So I think Ajax and Marseille will be... We're
14:22 not playing to their hands, but we kind of hope they'll be able to cope with what Ajax
14:28 and Marseille put up against them and then be able to hit them on the break, which is
14:31 something they weren't really able to do against Athens. They definitely have to be more tight
14:34 at set-pieces because that was something they were undone by, obviously, set-pieces against
14:38 Athens. So you hope that they've learnt from that and don't let that affect them again.
14:43 And they've got Liverpool at the weekend who are going to be quite frustrated going into
14:46 this game. Obviously they had a goal ruled out for offside, which was an offside against
14:50 Tottenham and they ended up losing the game. Do you think they're going to be coming into
14:53 Brighton trying to prove a point with that bit in between their teeth?
14:56 Yeah, I think Liverpool obviously had quite a good start to the season. Obviously it'll
15:00 be Alexis McAllister coming back to Brighton, playing against Brighton for the first time.
15:06 So that'll be an interesting kind of side note to the game. But yeah, it was really
15:10 unfortunate for Liverpool, really, playing with nine men for such a long period of time
15:13 and losing right at the end there. That'll obviously be gutting for them, but it kind
15:17 of showed how competitive they can be in adversity, really. Obviously everything went against
15:22 them. The VAR decisions were absolutely shocking in that game and I think they'll be reeling
15:27 from that and really looking to put things right and to really put pressure on the top
15:32 teams again. So I think despite how they started and how you'd expect them to maybe not compete
15:38 this season, they really have made a good start and I think it'll be a really tough
15:42 game for Brighton again.
15:43 Yeah, definitely. I mean, when you're talking about, obviously it looks like Man City will
15:47 run away with the league again this season, but when people are asked who they think will
15:50 come second, it's nearly always Liverpool. Everyone sees Liverpool as Man City's closest
15:53 competitor once again and it's going to be a really, really tough game for Brighton.
15:57 Yeah, a really tough game. Yeah, I think McAllister's obviously had a decent start and some of their
16:02 new signings have really, really impressed as well. So I think they'll really be looking
16:07 to beat Brighton. They've not had the best of success against them, obviously, in recent
16:11 seasons. This has been the high scoring draws or Brighton nicked the FA Cup last season.
16:16 So I'm expecting an entertaining game. I think a lot will depend on how Thursday night goes.
16:20 I think Brighton can get a win there and really get their confidence up again and be able to
16:25 go into that Liverpool game full of the confidence they had a couple of weeks ago. I think that'll
16:29 make a huge difference. But yeah, I think it'll be a great game and I'm really looking
16:32 forward to it.
16:33 Yeah, you can imagine there'll be quite a lot of games. You can't imagine Brighton getting
16:37 their first clean sheet of the league season against Liverpool.
16:40 Not against Liverpool, I don't think. I can't imagine a clean sheet. I think it'll be a
16:44 high scoring affair. I feel they might be able to nick a win in a high scoring game
16:50 or even a draw. So I don't think it'll be too bad a result really. Obviously, Liverpool
16:54 are still such a huge club and in arguably good form as well. So yeah, they're definitely
17:00 predicting a tough game for Brighton. But one, if they can win, it'll make such a huge
17:03 difference to the season again because they've got Man City to come after that, which is
17:08 not getting any easier.
17:09 Yeah, definitely. They've got a difficult string of games. But like we were joking about
17:13 before, it wouldn't even surprise us if Brighton lost five in a row and then beat Man City
17:17 or beat Liverpool. They're that kind of team where you don't really know what you're going
17:19 to get from them.
17:20 Yeah, well exactly. I think we said before that they've got an extremely tough run of
17:24 games and I think the next favourable game you would say is obviously at home against
17:27 Fulham and you wouldn't put it past them to beat Liverpool, beat Man City and then struggle
17:32 against Fulham because that's what we've come to expect with Brighton. But I think it's
17:36 so important they start to pick up those wins again and really bounce back from the
17:41 recent defeats and show why they're so well liked by neutral fans and show why they've
17:49 won so many people over with their style of play and the incredible wins they've had.
17:54 You just hope it's just a blip for the recent defeats.
17:56 Yeah, definitely. If we look back to the transfer window, some of the new players they brought
18:00 in, particularly Verbruggen and Soufati and Carlos Belaver, all of them have had rocky
18:05 performances since they've joined the Seagulls. What are your thoughts on those three players
18:09 so far?
18:10 So yeah, I think it's been difficult for Verbruggen first of all, obviously because he's been
18:14 in the team and then he's been out. So as I say, it's difficult to get any momentum
18:18 going. I think he's made some good saves and he's had some good moments but it's difficult
18:24 to really judge him when he's in and out of the team. It's the same with Drake and Steele,
18:29 it's so hard to make an impression really early on and I think it'll be interesting
18:34 to see what De Serbi does going forward if he's going to stick with one player to see
18:38 how they go on over a prolonged period of time.
18:42 Baleeba, I think you've seen a couple of games from him. He struggled a little bit
18:47 up against Chelsea in his first start so it'll be interesting to see if he's just kind of
18:53 early settling into the team. It's really early days for him and I think you couldn't
18:57 really expect him to be a world beater instantly but there's definitely signs there. I think
19:01 when he came on as a sub before that you could really see what he can bring to this team
19:04 and hopefully he can fill that void that's been left by Kaysedo. As we saw against Villa,
19:09 it's such a huge role that needs to be filled there and I really hope that he can do it
19:14 and he really can slot into that role.
19:17 Ansu Fati.
19:18 Ansu Fati, yeah, it was great to see him get his first goal for Brighton. I think we're
19:25 still going to see the best from him. If we haven't seen the levels that we maybe saw
19:28 at Barcelona, I can maybe see why he has been loaning to try and get his confidence back
19:33 up. He doesn't look at his best by any means. I think it's only exciting that you've got
19:37 a player like that. He scored quite early on in his Brighton loan spell so I think the
19:43 only way is up from here really and I really hope that he can improve and maybe start some
19:49 more games and get some more goals.
19:51 Definitely, signing a player like that you expect them to come in and go guns blazing
19:55 straight out the doors but it doesn't always happen like that. You look at Modric, he's
19:58 just scored his first league goal the other day after 20 league appearances I think it
20:02 was for Chelsea so it takes time for players to settle but like you said, I guess it's
20:05 a positive that he scored a goal relatively early on and the only way is up. He's been
20:09 getting his minutes as well, although he's taken off at half-time against Chelsea in
20:12 the League Cup.
20:13 I think it's sort of a naivety I think coming into a league that's so different to the French
20:17 league but he did have moments. I remember right down in the corner the ball came to
20:21 him and I think Modric had the ball and he tried to take it past him and his leg sort
20:24 of bent round and just poked it out the other side and he ran away with it and I thought
20:28 that was brilliant but yeah there's some learning to do there but I guess all three players
20:31 are quite young as well and I guess that's going to be quite difficult for them.
20:34 Yeah exactly, all very, very young players and adjusting to a new league, a new kind
20:39 of style of play, everything's kind of different to them really and I think we've only seen
20:45 little bits and pieces from them so far so I think it's only going to be improvements
20:48 from them and I think that's exciting to think that you can maybe embed those players into
20:52 the system and they'll get to know their team mates more. So yeah I'm not too concerned
20:56 about any of those players really I think from what I've seen so far. I think they're
21:00 the only ways up for all of them and they can only help Brighton to have a really successful
21:03 season.
21:04 Brilliant, thank you so much. And that is everything from us here at Latest TV News.
