00:00 In this episode of Modified, we're up in the Pacific Northwest.
00:03 Check it out, Rallycross Fest 2017.
00:05 Yes!
00:06 [Music]
00:30 [Music]
00:42 Since Jeff and I are drifters, we've always wanted to rally.
00:45 So we thought getting down and dirty in a Rallycross competition is a perfect way to
00:49 see who's a better driver.
00:51 Rallycross consists of getting the best time through slaloms, cones, and tight turns on
00:54 a loose surface.
00:56 First, Jeff's going down to Miller Rally Team to check out their facility and his car for
01:00 the event.
01:01 Meanwhile, I'm going to do the same with James at Dirt Fish Rally School and hopefully get
01:06 a couple pointers on how to beat Jeff in this weekend's competition.
01:10 We're here at the Miller Rally Team compound.
01:15 We've got Andy, the driver, Sean, the navigator, and they've been awesome enough to let me
01:19 drive their Subaru.
01:20 So tell me about the car.
01:22 Yeah, it's a 2000 2.5 RS.
01:26 Got a mild port and polish.
01:27 Some Delta 1500 cams.
01:29 It's about a 160 wheel.
01:30 I had a JDM six-speed on the shelf for a while and I figured I'd throw it in here.
01:36 We really like it.
01:37 It's got really short ratio gears and a differential controller so you can kind of play with the
01:41 power front and rear.
01:43 We did a different manifold and some phenolic spacers.
01:46 So really after you go run the car super hard, your intake temps stay about 70.
01:51 Everything's always pretty cool in here.
01:53 Nice.
01:54 Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
01:55 So what else is done to the car?
01:56 I mean, I see you've got crazy tires going on here.
02:00 These are gravel tires.
02:01 They're just real soft.
02:03 They normally have a pretty aggressive side edge for lateral grip.
02:06 Wheels, these are just some Enkei Sports.
02:08 We had some 15-inch wheels, just a really burly, heavy-duty wheel.
02:12 We've got some four-pot gravel brakes up front with the WaveSpec rotors.
02:15 Do you guys have to run fire systems at all or anything like that?
02:20 Not like full fire suppression.
02:22 We do have to have two fire extinguishers in the car.
02:25 So like if worst-case scenario, we have to use them, which I really hope we don't, at
02:31 least know where they are now.
02:32 Yeah, one behind Gear C and one up between his legs.
02:36 But we're not going to have any fires.
02:37 We're going to keep the wheels on.
02:38 We're going to keep the wheels on.
02:40 Wheels on, no trees.
02:42 I've never drove a rally car.
02:44 I just hope I can reach these pedals.
02:46 I guess I'll try.
02:47 Maybe we should check it out.
02:49 I'll know how much 2x4 to add to the pedals.
02:54 I think if I get like a little book, maybe one or two, I think we should be okay.
02:59 But yeah, I mean, this car is super cool.
03:02 It's got hydraulic U-brake, right?
03:04 I'm super excited.
03:05 Hopefully we both come home in one piece there.
03:08 I'm excited to see how you do.
03:10 Considering I've never ever been behind the wheel of a rally car, Sean and Nanny thought
03:14 it'd be a really good idea to get this rally thing a go before I show up at the event with
03:18 zero seat time.
03:19 Oh my God!
03:20 Is this real right now, dude?
03:27 Is this like, are you serious?
03:40 Yeah, there you go.
04:00 I just took a ride with Andy.
04:12 He took me around this little track he's got going on here.
04:15 And first lap, I was blown away.
04:18 Andy's an amazing driver.
04:19 He showed me the course, took me over some jumps.
04:21 I definitely was sweating a little bit, held onto the seat because I've never been in a
04:26 rally car.
04:27 We switched.
04:28 I drove.
04:29 I attempted to rally and not give Andy a heart attack, but it was super fun.
04:35 Definitely different from drifting and we'll see how we do at Dirt Fish.
04:50 We're here at Dirt Fish.
04:51 We got James Rimmer.
04:52 He's our GRC rally driver.
04:54 It's really cool.
04:55 They're going to let us drive this car this weekend at the event.
04:57 So how is this WRX different than just a normal WRX?
05:01 Yes, this is our 2016 STI school car.
05:04 We take it into our shop.
05:05 We do some basic things to it, mainly protection for the actual car.
05:08 So underbody protection, some rally wheels caged and stripped.
05:11 So protection, I mean, am I going to get to jump this thing?
05:14 Yeah, you know, we'll go over some basic rally techniques, get you in the driver's seat and
05:19 teach them those basic things and see how you do.
05:21 So I know Jeff's teaming up with Andy.
05:23 How are these two cars going to compare?
05:25 Andy's got a cool little car.
05:26 He built it himself.
05:27 It's naturally aspirated, so it's got a little less power, but it's got the nimbleness on
05:31 his side.
05:32 It's a little bit smaller of a car.
05:33 So a little bit of counteraction on both sides, but it'll be a good battle.
05:36 Cool.
05:37 Well, let's get out there.
05:38 Make
06:07 your line go wide or tight?
06:09 Tight.
06:10 Because the brakes help it rotate.
06:11 Brakes help it rotate.
06:12 You won an earlier turn than you think.
06:40 Yeah, that was super late.
06:45 The Dirtfish compound is amazing.
06:47 They have acres of their own proving grounds and tons of dirt to throw.
06:51 My car is super fun and I'm ready to take my new skills to Rallycross Fest.
06:56 But first, let's check in with Sam Du on our Project Civic.
07:04 What's up guys?
07:05 It's Sam Du from Super Street Magazine and welcome back to our modified Civic build.
07:09 So far, we've upgraded the exhaust flow, intake, and cooling of our hatchback and spent some
07:13 time on the dyno with Hon Data to dial it all in.
07:16 The stock suspension in our 2017 Civic hatchback Sport is already comfortable and carries Hon's
07:21 well-known handling characteristics.
07:23 But we're here with Mark from Eibach Springs in Corona, California to add some new coilover
07:27 suspension.
07:28 What's up, Sam?
07:29 What's up, Mark?
07:30 Good to see you.
07:31 Good to see you.
07:32 So can you tell everyone a little bit about Eibach?
07:33 Sure.
07:34 We're actually celebrating our 30th anniversary this year.
07:35 We've been doing business in Industrial Springs back in 1951 and then we came to the US in
07:41 1987 and been doing the automotive suspension springs since then.
07:46 We've also done more than just springs.
07:48 We're doing coilover suspension.
07:50 That's why we're here today.
07:51 And then we're also doing sway bars and shocks and alignment kits, anything you could possibly
07:56 need for your car.
07:58 So we know coilovers can improve a car's handling ability, but why?
08:01 So with the coilover system, you're able to lower the center of gravity of the car.
08:06 And in addition, you get higher spring rate and you get a shock that's valved specifically
08:11 for those springs.
08:12 So it overall affects the entire performance, this handling performance of the car.
08:17 You get faster turn in, better balance around a corner, and it's just an all-around easier
08:23 solution than piecing together different parts.
08:27 In addition, we're adding more aggressive wheels from Rays and a wider, higher performance
08:31 tire from Continental Tire.
08:33 Thanks Mark for all the great info.
08:34 Can't wait to go check them out.
08:36 Absolutely.
08:37 We're excited to be part of the modified Civic build.
08:41 As you can see, we're finished with the performance upgrades of our Honda Civic.
08:45 On the next episode of the modified Civic build, we'll be heading over to American Honda,
08:49 dressing it up a bit, and seeing what OEM accessories they have to offer for the 10th
08:53 Gen Civic.
08:54 See you soon.
08:54 Today is Rallycross Fest.
09:13 Jeff and I are here to compete against a wide variety of cars and drivers.
09:17 To be honest, I'm pretty nervous.
09:19 Jeff and I are used to smoke, not rocks and dirt flying in every direction.
09:24 Before I leave Jeff in the dust, we're going to meet up with the race organizers who can
09:27 explain what makes Rallycross so unique.
09:30 We're out here with Katie.
09:31 She's one of the founders of the Northwest Rally Association.
09:35 Tell us about the level of competitors this weekend.
09:38 The cool thing about this weekend is we had the school the first day, so that means we
09:41 have people who have never raced, never been in a car behind the wheel in this kind of
09:45 setting.
09:46 That was a really great opportunity today to bring them out.
09:48 That's us.
09:49 That was you.
09:50 That was us.
09:51 We have people at that level all the way up to people who do stage rally.
09:54 We have pro drivers and we have a lot of people who are really talented, really competitive.
09:59 They fund themselves with their 9 to 5s.
10:01 They work really hard to get here on the weekends that they can, and it's exciting to see them
10:05 come out and compete.
10:06 Yeah, I mean I saw one guy has a rental Camaro or something.
10:09 Shh, don't tell anyone.
10:10 I actually think there might be two rentals.
10:13 One's a Camaro, one's a Hyundai.
10:14 It's in a lunch truck.
10:15 Oh, I saw that one.
10:16 Yeah.
10:17 I mean you see a lot of Subaru's obviously.
10:19 You see some great home built cars, some old Toyotas, things like that.
10:23 My favorite is the '94 Honda Accord wagon that a guy got handed down from his mom.
10:27 Oh wow.
10:28 But now he brings it out and crushes it.
10:29 He's great.
10:30 That's awesome.
10:31 I heard that you don't even get to really have any practice laps.
10:35 You just go out and all of your laps are just scored.
10:38 Yes, every single run counts.
10:39 There are no dropped runs.
10:40 I've always looked at rally and thought it was awesome and wanted to do it since I was
10:45 a kid, so I'm really excited to be out here.
10:47 Before the main event and the race, Matt and I took advantage of the practice time so we
10:52 could squeeze in a couple more laps behind the wheel.
10:56 So what inspires you to hop in my car?
10:58 So Jim inspired me to hop in your car.
11:00 He told me to.
11:01 Can you reach the pedals okay?
11:04 It's actually, the seating position is super low.
11:06 Whoa.
11:07 Trying to get me to stall bro?
11:11 Cat powers everyone.
11:12 Cat powers.
11:14 Yeah, well I had the tires at one oh.
11:17 Woohoo!
11:18 It's his first day here.
11:22 First day.
11:23 Oh Jeff, your car is heavy.
11:26 Do it!
11:27 Yeah!
11:28 Yeah!
11:29 That was good.
11:30 That was good.
11:31 Let's just go.
11:32 Yeah!
11:33 That was good.
11:34 That was good.
11:35 Let's just park this thing off to the side over here and then we'll grab my car, we'll
11:39 swap, we'll go to slalom.
11:41 How do you like everything so far?
11:42 I mean I like that I can reach the steering wheel, I can reach the pedals, and I can comfortably
11:47 sit in this car.
11:48 How you doing up there Jeff?
11:49 I'm doing great!
11:50 I think the cool thing about this car is that it's a lot more comfortable than I thought
11:55 it would be.
11:56 I mean, I'm not going to lie, I'm not going to lie.
11:59 I think the cool thing about this car is I can go rally it and then I can go pick groceries
12:06 up.
12:07 Yeah.
12:08 Two second penalty.
12:09 That felt good though.
12:10 Yeah.
12:11 I'm here with Kito.
12:39 He holds the Northwest Rally Association events here in Washington.
12:42 He showed us around, gave us some pointers on how to not crash or break any cars and
12:47 I think we did okay.
12:49 Yeah, you guys came away today no body damage.
12:52 That's a plus.
12:53 Yeah, yeah.
12:55 That is a plus.
12:56 There's a bunch of people coming, what 150 drivers, 100 drivers?
13:00 107 drivers for tomorrow, yes.
13:02 Okay.
13:03 There'll be three run groups but we'll break them down by vehicle classification between
13:07 stock prepared and modified.
13:09 It's very geared towards the grassroots racer, people who are looking to get into rally.
13:15 This would be the first step.
13:16 So you'd start with rally cross and you move on to rally sprint and then if you wanted
13:21 to continue further then you would get into stage rally.
13:24 They're very diehard fans.
13:25 We run in the snow, we run in the hail, we run in sleet, we run rain and if you're out
13:30 here and you're doing rally, yeah, you're going to experience the elements for sure.
13:36 Jeff!
13:37 I feel amazing.
13:38 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:39 That's what we need.
13:40 We need 110 out of him.
13:41 110.
13:42 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:43 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:44 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:45 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:46 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:47 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:48 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:49 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:50 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:51 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:52 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:53 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:54 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:55 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:56 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:57 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:58 I'm going to send it 110%.
13:59 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:05 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:06 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:07 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:08 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:09 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:10 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:11 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:12 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:13 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:14 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:15 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:16 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:17 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:18 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:19 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:20 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:21 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:22 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:23 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:24 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:25 I'm going to send it 110%.
14:27 [Music]
14:40 All right, here we go.
14:41 [Music]
14:57 Yeah, dude.
14:58 You're on it.
14:59 You're on pace.
15:00 [Music]
15:05 Did I get one?
15:07 [Music]
15:27 Whoa, you're good.
15:28 You're on the gas.
15:29 On the gas.
15:30 [Music]
15:40 That was a hot run.
15:41 Thank you.
15:42 The 180 corner, you nailed.
15:44 That was just super smooth.
15:47 I checked one time as a non-rally driver.
15:50 I'm happy with that.
15:51 Yeah, you're improving every lap.
15:52 Yeah.
15:53 Jeff, you're going down, buddy.
15:55 Okay.
15:56 You're going down.
15:57 Yeah.
15:58 Okay, Cone Slayer.
16:00 So we're staged about to do my second run.
16:02 I'm definitely going to bring it a bit hotter, come in faster,
16:05 and kind of hang it out a little bit more.
16:07 Still try and keep it clean.
16:09 And, yeah, I feel good.
16:11 [Music]
16:40 [Engine revving]
16:56 I did pretty good.
16:57 I definitely hit another cone, which is just killing me.
17:01 Every run is like another two seconds.
17:03 But it was definitely faster, still, you know, kind of some sloppy areas.
17:07 There were some really sloppy areas, actually.
17:09 Matt's time is probably like a minute per lap.
17:12 I would say I'm doing all right.
17:14 I think I'm going to beat Matt, though, for sure.
17:17 I think he's going to owe me a plate of falafels.
17:19 A plate of falafels.
17:22 Really wish we could roll with the windows down one run.
17:25 Yeah, just do this the whole time.
17:26 Yeah.
17:27 [Engine revving]
17:56 [Engine revving]
17:58 Nice.
18:00 [Engine revving]
18:03 Solid, solid.
18:05 [Engine revving]
18:07 [Laughing]
18:08 He got it.
18:09 [Engine revving]
18:17 How'd you do?
18:18 I did pretty good.
18:19 I mean, I took out a couple cones.
18:22 Kind of had some understeer, but--
18:24 Cone slayer.
18:25 My car is like five feet bigger than yours.
18:28 Whatever, man.
18:29 It was good, though.
18:30 It was fun.
18:31 I mean, compared to drift, I would definitely get into this.
18:33 The cool thing is you don't have to change your tires every two laps.
18:36 That's true.
18:37 I really like exiting the turn in all-wheel drive because you just get that--
18:40 you get a good straight shot, and, you know, it really pulls you out of there,
18:43 so it's pretty fun.
18:44 It's a good challenge.
18:45 Yeah, the G meter definitely rises.
18:46 The G meter is high.
18:47 Yeah, G meter is high.
18:48 Yeah.
18:49 I wonder who won, you or me.
18:51 I don't know.
18:52 I want that plate of falafels.
18:54 Just saying.
18:55 Let's start in third place, driving a 2000 Subaru, Andy Miller.
19:00 [APPLAUSE]
19:03 And second place, driving a 2000 Subaru Impreza, Andy Sharples.
19:08 [APPLAUSE]
19:11 And in first place, driving a 2000 Subaru, car number 20, Jeff Stonebeck.
19:20 [APPLAUSE]
19:24 Yeah, man.
19:25 I know how to do that, guys.
19:27 [INAUDIBLE]
19:29 [APPLAUSE]
19:32 [MUSIC PLAYING]
19:35 Rallycross was epic.
19:40 Learning at a rally and seeing Jeff win was an awesome surprise.
19:43 This sport really gets the blood flowing.
19:46 Big thanks to Dirt Fish and the Miller Rally Team
19:48 for setting us up with cars and teaching us a few things on the way.
19:52 Stay tuned for the next episode of "Modified" as we go drag racing in Georgia.
19:57 [MUSIC PLAYING]
20:01 [MUSIC PLAYING]
20:05 [MUSIC PLAYING]
20:08 [MUSIC PLAYING]
20:12 [MUSIC PLAYING]
20:15 you
