00:00 which is an incredible state-of-the-art facility
00:02 that trains cabin crew for the most extreme situations.
00:06 So fasten your seatbelts, tray tables up,
00:08 and challenge acceptance.
00:10 Hassan, it is so nice to meet you.
00:15 Likewise.
00:16 I am so excited to be here today.
00:18 What are some of the things I can expect?
00:21 Surprises.
00:22 That's all you should expect.
00:24 Back in the day, being a flight attendant
00:28 used to be so sexy and pan-am.
00:32 I mean, it was so romanticized.
00:35 But we are not waiters of the sky.
00:37 We are first responders, and our main reason we're there
00:41 is to protect you in case anything were to ever happen.
00:44 And there's a lot of things that can happen.
00:46 One of the things Michelle's actually going to learn this week
00:48 is how to put out a fire.
00:49 So we have over here a fire extinguisher.
00:52 You have something we call a PVE,
00:53 which is a protective breathing equipment
00:56 to help you protect with the effects of smoke around you.
00:59 When do I get to use this?
01:00 Never.
01:01 Okay, so we keep this down.
01:02 We lower this.
01:02 Yes.
01:03 Coming.
01:03 Okay.
01:04 Whoa, this is so cool.
01:06 Is this like simulating the inside of a plane,
01:09 but everything is fireproof?
01:11 Yes.
01:11 Ooh, we even have a computer here.
01:13 Yes, not for long.
01:15 Here's where I want your input.
01:16 What do you do when you're in the middle of your service
01:18 and you see fire out of, well, let's say...
01:23 Are you starting a fire right now?
01:25 Yes.
01:25 Oh my God.
01:27 What do we do?
01:27 What do we do?
01:28 We grab a fire extinguisher.
01:30 There's a fire in here.
01:31 We need to grab a fire extinguisher.
01:33 Oh my God.
01:33 Hurry up.
01:34 This is going.
01:35 Grab a fire extinguisher.
01:36 There's no warning.
01:39 Oh my God.
01:40 Oh my God.
01:41 And here we are.
01:42 We're ready to fire.
01:42 Oh my God.
01:44 Just aim and shoot.
01:45 Aim and shoot.
01:46 Aim at the base of the fire and shoot.
01:48 Ooh.
01:48 That is well done.
01:52 The fire's out.
01:53 Oh my God.
01:55 Hassan, you have tricks up your sleeve.
01:58 So there's another fire happening somewhere.
02:01 Duck, cover, fight.
02:03 Oh my God.
02:15 Fire.
02:15 Fire.
02:16 That's a fail.
02:25 You never leave the hatchback open
02:27 because you end up exposing the fire to more oxygen,
02:29 which only helps it grow even bigger.
02:32 Why would there ever be a fire in the overhead compartment?
02:35 Well, there could be many reasons.
02:36 I had an incident once where we had--
02:38 When you were a flight attendant.
02:39 When I was a flight attendant, where we had a passenger
02:42 who had brought some pyrotechnics, apparently,
02:45 because he was an illusionist.
02:48 He had a plan to use them for his magic,
02:50 for some of his illusions.
02:52 And it actually exploded in there,
02:54 causing a big fire.
02:55 It's a development [BLEEP] I'm sorry.
02:57 You had a magician set up for this?
03:02 I only wonder how they got it on board.
03:05 But it did happen.
03:06 Well, he's a magician.
03:08 After the groundbreaking discovery
03:09 that magicians are really the true threat to airport
03:12 security, Hassan gave me a brief tour
03:14 of their private jet mock-ups, which
03:16 I used as an opportunity to try and break Hassan out
03:19 of his shell.
03:21 I don't have any dance moves, so I'm out.
03:24 But knowing you can't rush a good thing,
03:26 it was time to board the flight simulator for cabin training.
03:29 Welcome, Michelle.
03:29 Welcome on board.
03:30 This particular piece of aircraft
03:32 can actually depict motion in four degrees.
03:35 So we can do a crash.
03:36 We can do turbulence.
03:37 We can do a decompression.
03:38 And it feels like the real thing,
03:39 not like an amusement park ride.
03:41 Well, I could easily say very close to the real thing.
03:44 So we're ready for flight.
03:45 Let me close the door and get--
03:46 Can I close the door?
03:47 Go on.
03:48 It's heavy.
03:49 Yeah.
03:50 And then this goes down?
03:51 Yes.
03:52 Woof!
03:55 It's closed.
03:57 OK, I'm going to take your seats for takeoff.
03:59 Wait, you're a passenger?
04:00 Yes, I'm a passenger.
04:01 OK, so you're a passenger.
04:02 Yeah.
04:03 So you attend to my needs after takeoff.
04:04 Oh my god, it does feel like we're taking off.
04:10 Oh, it even has the little bumps in like-- oh,
04:12 you can feel it fully going up into the sky.
04:15 Ah, this is so cool!
04:18 Wow.
04:20 Hey, attendant, can I have my tea or coffee now?
04:22 I would like to have a hot drink.
04:25 We are not at cruising altitude yet.
04:27 We appreciate your patience.
04:29 Good response.
04:32 Hey, seatbelt sign off.
04:33 Can I have my hot drink now, ma'am?
04:36 We are not yet starting our--
04:37 Seatbelt signs off, but we're cruising, from what I see.
04:42 I mean, OK.
04:43 I don't even know what these things are.
04:46 Weird cabin crew.
04:47 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:51 Oh my god.
04:54 Can I have my hot drink?
04:56 This job is unique because in the midst of emergency,
04:58 you're expected to have a customer service face.
05:01 If it was turbulent and you really could stand up straight,
05:03 like, you'd think somebody wouldn't order coffee, right?
05:07 Where is that hot drink, ma'am?
05:09 Oh my god, it's not coming.
05:12 Some people just like don't think like that,
05:14 and they don't know to not do certain things that
05:17 make sense to us.
05:18 So I think if you can have that empathetic understanding
05:21 mindset, I think you will truly be a great flight attendant.
05:25 Sometimes it annoys me when people just
05:27 hang stuff in the forward closet without asking,
05:29 but then there's been times where
05:31 I've had to catch myself, like, people
05:33 have been hanging their suit to go to their son's funeral.
05:35 You just never know what somebody is going through.
05:38 Hello.
05:39 Hello.
05:40 Coffee, tea, or milk?
05:42 Can I have a cappuccino, please?
05:44 We do not serve those, unfortunately.
05:47 You said coffee.
05:48 I'll have coffee with milk.
05:49 OK, great.
05:50 What?
05:51 Oh.
05:52 What's that?
05:53 What do I do with it?
05:55 Put it over your face and use the elastic.
05:59 I'm supposed to help you.
06:01 Oh my god, I'm helping you.
06:04 Do I have to?
06:05 If there ever is a decompression, which
06:07 is where there's a rapid cabin, you
06:09 have air pressure loss, like a window bust or cracks,
06:12 or the door opens, the masks immediately drop.
06:15 I don't know if you ever paid attention to the safety demo,
06:18 but it always says put your mask on before helping others.
06:21 Because if we're not OK, how can we help anybody else?
06:24 I've been on a plane probably hundreds of times in my life
06:26 and heard the announcement, do it yourself or someone else.
06:30 And in the moment, I'm like, to help you.
06:32 Frozen reactions are normal.
06:34 That's why we train here.
06:36 So when it happens in real life, you
06:38 correct it yourself then.
06:39 If you don't put your oxygen mask on as soon as possible,
06:42 it could lead to you becoming hypoxic.
06:45 Come on in, Michelle.
06:46 What the heck is this?
06:48 You're about to find out.
06:49 All right, so this is our hypoxia simulator room.
06:52 Hypoxia simulator?
06:54 We are going to be playing around
06:56 with the oxygen levels in your body,
06:57 just to give you the feel of decompression.
07:00 Is this safe to do?
07:01 It is absolutely safe.
07:02 You have nothing to worry about.
07:04 I'll be on this control center, and I'll
07:05 be keeping an eye on you.
07:07 And I'll be keeping an eye on your vitals as well.
07:08 OK.
07:09 So I'm going to be expected to do
07:11 a bunch of cognitive ability tests
07:13 while my brain has less oxygen.
07:15 Yes.
07:15 Sign your full name.
07:17 Is invincible.
07:21 OK, if you're ready, we can start.
07:23 Hypoxia is scary because the symptoms are gradual,
07:27 and you may not know it's happening until it's too late.
07:30 Lightheadedness, your motor skills
07:32 are not going to work properly, and there's
07:34 going to be a lack of oxygen. And you'll
07:35 be able to feel that and see it.
07:37 [YELLING]
07:39 Michelle, you can abort if you're not feeling too good.
07:42 I got to finish it.
07:43 Heading 225.
07:46 Flight level 310.
07:47 Heading 130.
08:02 Flight level 320.
08:05 [YELLING]
08:08 Take deep breaths.
08:09 [INHALES]
08:10 [EXHALES]
08:11 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:14 OK, so we started the exercise with Michelle is invincible.
08:22 The second time around, it asked you to write
08:24 Michelle is invisible.
08:26 And your response to that was--
08:27 can we get you to close in on this?
08:29 Oh my god, that before and after of my handwriting.
08:31 There are a lot of tasks that reminded
08:33 me of the tasks in Among Us.
08:34 Yeah, you know now.
08:35 Well, now I know if I play Among Us with my friends
08:37 and get hypoxic, I'm probably going to have an advantage.
08:41 Yes.
08:43 [LAUGHS]
08:45 X-Ray Hot Seat.
08:48 You're in the X-Ray Hot Seat.
08:50 I need to know, what are all the tips and tricks for better
08:53 flying?
08:54 Staying as close as possible to the cabin crew
08:57 greatly increases your chances of survival
08:59 in the event of a crash, because they are right there
09:01 to help you out.
09:02 When I step onto the aircraft, I actually
09:04 go underneath the seat and check.
09:06 OK, my life jacket is in place.
09:08 It could be missing.
09:09 Like people take this?
09:10 Yes, people take that.
09:11 People steal that.
09:13 What's the craziest thing that's happened to you on a plane?
09:15 The craziest thing for me was topless women.
09:21 But then--
09:22 [LAUGHS]
09:24 But actually, the most difficult ones to deal with
09:26 are situations where people suffer
09:28 from medical emergencies.
09:31 I'm sorry, but did you just use topless women?
09:35 Yeah.
09:35 In medical-- the same sentence.
09:41 Oh, I'm literally crying.
09:44 OK, I'm ready for the next thing.
09:47 Medicals happen all the time.
09:49 A lot of seizures, actually, that's a very common thing.
09:52 I think that's a really big misconception,
09:54 is that it is just this sparkly, romantic job.
09:57 And while it is, it's so many other things, too.
10:00 The job of evacuating 150 passengers
10:04 fell to flight attendants.
10:05 The airline credits a flight attendant
10:07 for helping deliver the newborn.
10:08 Now, those flight attendants are being called heroes.
10:12 Survivors say she carried people twice her size to safety.
10:16 If I could tell the public one thing,
10:17 is actually you need to appreciate what a flight
10:19 attendant actually does.
10:21 It's very demanding, and it does take its toll.
10:24 First thing, you adopt your brace position.
10:26 So your brace position is going to be this way.
10:28 So elbows closed, OK?
10:30 So anything that comes and falls on you,
10:32 you have this to protect you.
10:34 All right?
10:34 And this is going to feel as if we're crashing.
10:36 Yes.
10:37 OK, initiating crash sequence.
10:39 [HORN HONKING]
10:41 [ENGINE REVVING]
10:44 Brace!
10:45 Brace!
10:46 Brace!
10:47 Heads down!
10:48 Stay down!
10:49 Heads down!
10:50 Stay down!
10:51 Heads down!
10:52 Stay down!
10:53 Heads down!
10:54 Stay down!
10:55 Check outside condition.
10:56 Check the door.
10:57 Evacuate!
11:04 Evacuate!
11:06 Stay back!
11:07 Stay back!
11:08 Stay back!
11:09 Stay back!
11:10 Stay back!
11:12 Stay back!
11:15 Jump and slide!
11:16 Jump and slide!
11:19 Jump and slide!
11:20 [SOBBING]
11:26 Oh my god.
11:28 Oh.
11:29 [BREATHING HEAVILY]
11:33 Oh.
11:34 Oh, Jesus.
11:36 I am convinced Hasan has no fear.
11:40 Hasan, you're so brave.
11:41 And you've made it.
11:45 Good.
11:46 I feel like the final challenge in, like, Legends
11:48 of the Hidden Temple or something.
11:50 Do you know that challenge?
11:51 Yes.
11:52 You do?
11:52 Yes.
11:53 OK!
11:53 Hasan's the real one.
11:55 He knows Legends.
11:56 OK.
11:57 Well, I was your only passenger.
11:58 So you did well in evacuating me out of the aircraft.
12:01 But what if there were, like, 300 passengers?
12:03 That's what a cabin crew has to take care of, yeah.
12:05 And you're doing that all while dealing with your own trauma
12:07 of just having to--
12:08 Exactly.
12:09 All of this has to be done under 90 seconds.
12:11 In learning about evacuations, you get thrown
12:14 so many different scenarios.
12:15 So maybe it's you land in the Arctic.
12:18 Oh.
12:19 Oh, no.
12:20 This is literally my nightmare.
12:22 Maybe you land in the jungle.
12:24 Hand-operated water maker.
12:26 People don't know the sheer amount of information
12:31 that we have to learn as a flight attendant.
12:33 Well, that's for me.
12:34 You go build yourself another one.
12:36 Oh!
12:37 It is pretty nice in here.
12:39 Surviving in a jungle is easier.
12:42 Arctic, still not that bad.
12:44 However, trying to survive at sea poses the biggest danger.
12:48 So for Michelle's final challenge today,
12:51 we shall do a ditching scenario, which is an aircraft
12:54 essentially crashing onto water.
12:56 We'll add waves.
12:57 We'll add rain.
12:58 We'll add thunder and lightning.
13:00 And it's going to be a very interesting session
13:02 for Michelle.
13:03 So this is after we've crashed in the water.
13:06 We've evacuated the plane.
13:07 Now, generally speaking, if there's
13:09 rain or bad weather around, you would
13:10 want to cover your canopy.
13:12 I want you to figure that out.
13:13 OK.
13:14 Any time it does get too much, you let us know.
13:17 OK, signal me.
13:18 OK, and we'll stop.
13:20 [MUSIC PLAYING]
13:23 All right, very good.
13:25 Make your way up.
13:26 Come on.
13:29 Use the net, yeah?
13:30 Yep.
13:31 Use the next handle.
13:33 Use the net, yes.
13:34 Again.
13:34 Michelle!
13:45 Michelle!
13:47 Unroll it from the other side, yeah?
13:49 Yeah.
13:49 Flip it.
13:54 Flip it.
13:55 Yeah.
13:56 Cover it, Michelle.
14:02 Yeah, well done.
14:04 Keep it covered.
14:06 [SIREN]
14:09 How are you doing?
14:31 How am I doing?
14:32 Nature will not cooperate all the time.
14:35 So you need to be prepared when worse comes to worse.
14:38 You're ready for it.
14:39 So next time you find yourself on a plane,
14:41 make sure to thank your flight attendant for their service.
14:43 If you didn't know, we are currently
14:45 on a mission to convince the United States Secret Service
14:48 to let us film a video with them.
14:50 So please help us get to 3 million subscribers
14:52 to help make it happen.
