Rep. Gaetz put forth a motion to remove McCarthy from his position on Oct. 2, ABC News reports. .
House rules stipulate that the matter must come to a vote within two legislative days. .
While appearing on ABC's 'This Week,' Gaetz criticized the manner in which McCarthy has navigated spending and budget issues.
Kevin McCarthy, at one point or another, has lied to all of us, Rep. Matt Gaetz, on ABC's 'This Week'.
McCarthy views Gaetz's actions as being
driven by a "personal" grudge.
Let's get over with it.
Let's start governing, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, via statement.
If he's upset because he tried
to push us into a shutdown and I
made sure government didn't shut
down, then let's have that talk, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, via statement.
McCarthy also took to X
to simply say, "Bring it on.".
Even though Gaetz previously said that he may not have enough votes to remove McCarthy, he will keep trying until he does.
Well, like I've said, it took Speaker McCarthy
15 votes to become the speaker. So until I
get to 14 or 15, I don't think I'm being
any more dilatory than he was, Rep. Matt Gaetz, to ABC News Senior Congressional Correspondent Rachel Scott.
While similar motions have been filed
throughout the House's history, no speaker has
ever been successfully removed in such a manner.
