Kevin McCarthy Is Leaving Congress Early, , Won’t Run for Reelection in 2024.
The former House speaker made the
announcement in a 'Wall Street Journal' op-ed.

McCarthy was ousted as
House speaker in October.
His temporary successor, former speaker pro tempore
Patrick McHenry, a McCarthy ally, announced that he
will not seek reelection next year either.
House Republicans, particularly those who voted
to oust McCarthy, had mixed reactions about his
retirement announcement, 'USA Today' reports.
I thank him for his service
and wish him well, Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., one of the eight GOP members
who voted to oust McCarthy, via 'USA Today'.
Matt Gaetz, on the other hand, took
to X to simply write, "McLeavin.'".
Rep. Carlos Gimenez took to X to call McCarthy a "leader of conviction" with whom
he has been "proud to stand alongside.".
Rep. Kevin Kiley called the former speaker
"irreplaceable in terms of the value that he brought
to our delegation and the entire conference.".
Once McCarthy leaves Congress, a special election to fill his spot must be declared by Gov. Gavin Newsom within 14 days.
