“Mamta Ji did a scam in the scheme named after Mahatma Gandhi.”, Anurag Thakur hits out at TMC

Critiquing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's decision to stage a protest in Delhi on October 2 regarding the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) program, Union Minister Anurag Thakur raised concerns about her choice to send allegedly corrupt leaders to the protest site. Thakur's remarks came in response to TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee's sit-in at Rajghat, where he demanded the release of funds for West Bengal from the Central government.
Anurag Thakur took a jab at the TMC, mentioning that in 2019, a central team-initiated investigations into corruption cases in West Bengal, which made the TMC quite anxious. According to him, the investigations revealed significant corruption within the state. He claimed that funds were misappropriated by portraying existing projects as new ones, and the TMC government allegedly engaged in corruption under the guise of Mahatma Gandhi's schemes.
Enumerating what he considered as scandals during the TMC's governance, the BJP leader listed the Coal Scam, Saradha Scam, Teacher Recruitment Scam, PM Housing Scam, Rose Valley Scam, and Cow Smuggling Scam.
Thakur asserted that corruption occurred in housing for the impoverished, as houses were allocated to individuals who already owned multi-story residences. He pointed out that after independence, only PM Modi's government built four crore concrete houses for the needy. He questioned why three-story house owners were included in the PM Awas Yojana and why eligible individuals were excluded. He also questioned Mamata Banerjee's lack of action when the Centre raised concerns, and he inquired about the destination of the ""cut money."" Thakur emphasized that PM Modi's government provided four times more funding to West Bengal than the UPA government.
Anurag Thakur further alleged that under the UPA regime, MGNREGA received Rs 14,985 crore, whereas it received Rs 54,150 crore in 2021 during the NDA government. Similarly, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana received Rs 4,466 crore during the UPA era and Rs 30,000 crore during the NDA government's tenure. He also claimed that the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) received Rs 626 crore during the UPA period and has now received Rs 74,034 crore.
