00:00 Hello, Assalam-o-Alaikum, once again, Khushaam Adid, the Masterclass with Malik May.
00:15 Today's topic is as important as your batting, bowling or wicket-keeping skills.
00:24 Today's topic is fielding, and you can see that I am very excited.
00:30 Fielding is something that even if you are not doing physical fitness,
00:38 you can cover both things in fielding.
00:45 One is your physical fitness and the other is your fielding.
00:48 Since we are talking about fielding, there are many things that we say that you should not dive.
00:59 Your child is told not to dive, you will get hurt, your elbows or knees will be scratched.
01:08 I will tell you a story, I started playing cricket from a street neighborhood.
01:18 There were many tournaments at that time, I am sure there are still today.
01:23 But at that time, it was a big tradition that there were tournaments on the roads.
01:28 And there were houses on the sides because you did not get a square or a hexagon on the sides.
01:35 You could take three or four runs in front.
01:41 You had to rotate the strike so that you could defend the total.
01:50 Mostly, the tactics used by bowlers were not to close the ball, which we call half-volley.
01:58 You can take six or four runs by hitting a short in front of the half-volley.
02:05 All bowlers used to bowl short of length.
02:08 So you had to maneuver the ball so that you could run the runs.
02:14 Believe me, at that time, it never occurred to me that if I dive, my elbows or knees will be scratched.
02:24 So to save each and every run, we used to dive on the roads.
02:30 And when we used to go home, we used to get scolded for doing this.
02:35 Sometimes we used to put a bandage on our knees, sometimes we used to scratch our shoulders.
02:42 So there have been such injuries.
02:45 That's why I want you to never stop your child from doing this as parents or as coaches.
02:53 When I joined the team, I was not emphasized in this particular department.
03:05 But in modern day cricket, it is as important as the 10-15 runs in test matches.
03:21 Similarly, in ODIs, sometimes you need 30-40 runs and your last 3-4 batsmen do it.
03:30 So fielding is equally important.
03:33 And I want to tell you that you have to give as much time to fielding as you have to give to batting, bowling or wicketkeeping.
03:49 Because it is important that you should do flat catches, high catches, back catches on every hot spot or field positioning.
04:03 For example, there is a back foot point, covers, extra cover, mid-off, mid-on, short mid-wicket, square leg, short fine leg, short third man.
04:15 You should do at least 4-5 catches on all these positions.
04:19 Flat catches, high catches and back catches.
04:26 Similarly, you should go to the boundary line.
04:30 All the hot spots on the boundary line or sometimes you are late, your captain is late, you can get a penalty in late overs.
04:44 So the captain sometimes sends you to such spots where you have no idea that you have never practiced here.
04:53 If you get an important catch, because where the cricket has reached, there are 5, 10, 15, 20 close matches.
05:03 Especially when good teams are playing together.
05:07 So it becomes equally important that you practice on every hot spot, every field positioning.
05:14 Like you did in the 38 circle, similarly you have to practice on the boundary line.
05:24 This is so important, why I am repeating this again and again.
05:28 Because fielding is very important.
05:34 I can give you an example here.
05:36 Even in those days, Jonty Rhodes used to save 25-30 runs.
05:44 Even the captains of those days used to ask why we feed Jonty Rhodes.
05:52 He gave a very good answer.
05:54 He said that Jonty Rhodes saves at least 25-30 runs in the field.
06:00 Even if he does 20-25 runs, he gives me 50-60 runs at the end of the day as a leader.
06:07 I can never forget that run out he gave to Nzamam Bai.
06:12 That was pure skill.
06:14 I have never seen such a run out in cricket.
06:19 That was such a special run out.
06:21 It was in such a moment where the South African team needed Nzamam Bai's wicket.
06:29 Because that match was in a very crucial situation.
06:33 And it's not like catches win matches.
06:35 You get opportunities as a team in the field.
06:41 But all your fielders should have worked on their skills.
06:47 It's time to go on break.
06:49 After the break, let's discuss my three favourite catches in different situations.
06:56 See you all after the break.
06:57 [MUSIC]
07:03 Welcome back from the break.
07:04 Before the break, we were discussing about fielding.
07:09 My three favourite catches are Lala's 2009 World T20 match in the Oval.
07:17 He caught it while running back on Umar Gul's ball.
07:22 There was not enough time for Lala to go under the ball and then balance and catch it.
07:30 He had to run backwards and catch it.
07:35 It was a classical catch.
07:37 This is my own catch.
07:41 It's not my favourite catch.
07:42 But I want to discuss it so that youngsters can get a message from it.
07:49 It was the 2009 World T20 semifinal catch of Jack Callis on Saeed Ajmal's ball.
07:57 I was standing on the mid-on.
07:58 That match was in a very crunchy situation.
08:04 Jack Callis was their only hope to finish the game.
08:10 That catch went in the air and it went very high.
08:14 When that ball went in the air, the crowd was shouting.
08:22 My teammates and I were expecting it.
08:28 The dressing room staff were expecting it because it was a very important catch.
08:35 I didn't have the expectations of the Pakistanis sitting outside the stadium.
08:45 I had one thing in my mind.
08:47 How do I catch this ball?
08:51 It was a very pressure catch.
08:58 But I always gave the same importance to fielding as I gave to batting and bowling.
09:08 That's why I was able to catch it.
09:11 Because working on your skill is such a thing.
09:14 We discuss a lot that you should have confidence.
09:20 Where does confidence come from?
09:21 Confidence always comes from the place where you work on your skill.
09:28 When you have to play a 140-meter bowler in a match,
09:32 you can deal with it at a pace of 145.
09:38 That's why that catch.
09:41 At one point, I thought that if that catch had gone in the air,
09:49 the semi-final would have gone.
09:53 All the expectations would have gone.
09:56 I would have gone too.
09:59 That's why it was such a thing.
10:02 There is a catch by Shadab Khan in 2018.
10:06 It was a final, if I'm not wrong.
10:10 He did a diving catch in the 19th or 20th over.
10:14 He was fielding at mid-off.
10:16 He was standing inside the 30-yard circle.
10:20 That catch is very important for me.
10:24 Because usually, as a bowler or an all-rounder,
10:29 if you have done your overs,
10:34 and you think that you are in the 19th or 20th over,
10:39 you have to know how to bat.
10:41 Your mind gets diverted.
10:44 But that catch was such that he did a dive on the right side.
10:48 And he took that catch.
10:50 The aim was that you always have to be switched on in fielding.
10:56 In bowling, if you have done an over,
10:59 you get some time.
11:01 Or if you get a turn in batting,
11:03 or even if you are on a non-striker end,
11:05 you get time.
11:07 But fielding is a department where you have to be switched on.
11:11 And you have to be switched on when the bowler starts running to bowl the ball.
11:19 You have to be switched on then.
11:21 These are three of my favorite catches.
11:25 And I will demonstrate them to you in my outdoor coaching zone.
11:31 I am very excited because fielding is a department where I feel happy.
11:36 Not just talking, but demonstrating as well.
11:40 And I will also practice in that.
11:43 So, let's meet and see you after the break.
11:46 Welcome to our outdoor coaching zone.
11:54 Today, I will show these kids some basic fielding drills.
12:02 In fact, I will get them to do it as well.
12:04 Okay?
12:05 Come, I will demonstrate it to you.
12:07 And I will see how strong you guys are.
12:09 Come.
12:10 We discussed the great Javed Miyadad's drill in the studio.
12:20 He used to get us to do it and we used to benefit a lot from it.
12:24 Not just our fielding was good,
12:26 but our physical fitness also improved a lot.
12:29 I have six balls in my hand.
12:31 I will demonstrate it to you.
12:34 He is a very good fielder.
12:36 I will throw six balls at him.
12:39 One on his left, one on his right.
12:43 And he will keep running.
12:45 Watch this.
12:47 Very good.
12:56 This drill has a lot of advantages.
12:59 First, you are watching the ball till the end.
13:03 Second, your movement is very fast.
13:06 Third, your physical fitness is improving.
13:12 Your legs are getting stronger.
13:14 Your movement is getting faster.
13:16 And you are watching the ball till the end.
13:18 This was the great Javed Miyadad's drill.
13:21 I still do it and it is very beneficial.
13:24 You guys must try it.
13:26 Make your kids try it as well.
13:28 For example, you are standing in the slips.
13:32 What should be your positioning for that?
13:37 Some people stand very comfortably.
13:39 It is okay.
13:41 You should stand in your own way.
13:49 But when the ball is about to come,
13:53 you should be in a position where your knees are bent.
14:00 The reason for the bent knees is that
14:02 your weight should be on both your legs.
14:06 When the weight is on both your legs,
14:08 your knees should be on your toes.
14:13 Because when your movement is a little ahead,
14:17 it means that you are in a ready position.
14:20 When you are in a ready position,
14:22 you can move in any direction.
14:24 It is not necessary that your hands should be like this.
14:28 Some people feel comfortable when their hands are like this.
14:32 Some people are like this.
14:34 Some people are like this.
14:36 So it is your own style.
14:38 But the basic thing to do in the slips is that
14:42 your knees should be a little bent and your weight should be a little ahead.
14:48 So that you can go here, here, forward, up and jump.
14:54 You can also dive in some direction.
14:56 So this is a very basic thing.
15:00 And the other thing is that
15:02 your hand position should be open.
15:08 Your hands should not be like this.
15:12 They should be open.
15:14 If your fingers are open,
15:18 then you can catch very easily.
15:20 These were flat catches.
15:22 Now I will tell you about high catches.
15:24 High catch is very important.
15:26 And the right technique behind it is that
15:30 you should try to go as soon as possible under the ball.
15:34 The sooner you go under the ball,
15:36 the more time you will get to balance.
15:38 And how is the balance?
15:40 The balance is such that
15:42 you can go under the ball as soon as possible.
15:44 And you can go under the ball as soon as possible.
15:46 And you can go under the ball as soon as possible.
15:48 And you can go under the ball as soon as possible.
15:50 And how is the balance?
15:52 The balance is such that
15:54 your left foot or right foot should be a little ahead.
16:02 This will give you a balance.
16:04 If you get a balance,
16:06 then it is easy to catch.
16:08 And this allows you to get in the best position.
16:12 And then try not to take the ball below this.
16:18 Try not to take the catch below this.
16:22 It should be here.
16:24 When it is here, it will be very easy for you.
16:27 You will take the force of the ball like this
16:31 and catch it easily.
16:33 We see the wicket keepers, what they do.
16:36 They take the ball to the side.
16:39 Because they bring the force of the ball with them.
16:42 Similarly, this is very important for the fielders.
16:48 Now throw the catch a little to the left.
16:53 See this.
16:55 This position
16:58 is because you caught it easily.
17:02 Instead of running a little late on it
17:05 or I say this is an easy catch.
17:07 Catches are left by those who are easy.
17:10 Or if a fielder is going in running,
17:13 then that catch falls.
17:15 The running catch does not have a balance.
17:18 The practice you have done in it,
17:21 that comes and helps you.
17:25 But the catch that is in our control,
17:30 which we can do by running a little
17:33 or by diving,
17:35 that still happens.
17:37 But for the running catch,
17:39 a lot of practice is needed.
17:41 The catch that you do while running.
17:43 Similarly, throw a little to the right.
17:46 See this, it was on the right but a little behind.
17:52 But still,
17:54 it is very important to have a gap between both legs.
17:57 It will allow you to balance yourself.
18:01 When you will balance,
18:03 then there is a 95% chance that you will catch that one.
18:07 But the most important thing is
18:10 that catches are always those
18:12 when you see it till the end
18:14 while hitting it in your hand.
18:16 This is the most basic and most important point.
18:21 And we should not miss this.
18:23 Always remember
18:25 that when we are fielding,
18:27 when the ball is in our hand,
18:29 then only we should give the next reaction.
18:32 Similarly, there is a back catch.
18:35 I will show you that too.
18:37 In back catch,
18:43 you have to see the ball.
18:45 When you are in the start,
18:49 and the shot is hit,
18:52 it goes behind you.
18:55 Now you know that you have to run behind.
18:58 In that, you have to make sure
19:00 that it is towards your right shoulder
19:04 or towards your left shoulder
19:06 when the ball is above you.
19:08 The shoulder from which it is above,
19:10 you will turn that side.
19:12 If it is above my left shoulder,
19:14 then I will turn left.
19:16 If it is above my right shoulder,
19:18 then I will turn right.
19:20 It is important because
19:22 there is very less chance of disbalance.
19:28 Because you have moved in the right direction.
19:30 If the catch is on my left,
19:32 and I have turned right,
19:35 then I will have to look like this.
19:39 If I have to look like this,
19:41 then my balance will be out.
19:43 If the balance is out,
19:44 then the chances of catching will be less.
19:46 My favorite catch of Shahid Afridi
19:49 was 2009 World T20.
19:52 In which he ran behind
19:55 and he didn't have a chance to balance.
19:58 He did that catch in running.
20:01 He did it because
20:03 he moved in the right direction.
20:06 The direction in which the ball went,
20:08 he moved on that shoulder.
20:10 That's why he did that catch
20:12 and he did it very comfortably.
20:14 If you see that catch,
20:17 the catch was such that
20:19 the boundary was not that far.
20:23 But as soon as he caught, he stopped there.
20:26 This means that
20:28 the one whose basics are strong,
20:31 will be a good fielder.
20:33 And the one who gives full time to fielding,
20:36 like bowling, batting,
20:38 and wicket keeping,
20:40 or physical fitness,
20:42 will be good.
20:43 [Music]
20:47 [Music]
20:51 [Music]
21:17 Now we move to our next segment
21:20 which is Lipton Green Tea Fitness Tip of the Day.
21:23 [Music]
21:26 Today's fitness tip is
21:31 by the great Javed Niyadat.
21:34 He used to get us to do a fielding drill.
21:37 He used to put two cones
21:39 and the distance was about 10-12 yards.
21:43 And what he used to do,
21:45 he used to take six balls
21:47 and first he used to throw them to your left,
21:50 then to your right,
21:52 then to your left.
21:53 Those six balls,
21:54 three used to come to your left,
21:55 three used to come to your right.
21:56 What was the advantage of that?
21:58 The advantage was that
21:59 first, our fielding used to improve,
22:02 second, our physical fitness used to improve a lot
22:05 because he didn't give you that much time.
22:07 When you have caught the ball on the left side,
22:10 as soon as you have thrown it back to him,
22:12 he used to throw the ball to the right side.
22:15 So what happened with that,
22:16 both the things were good.
22:18 Thank you, Javed Bhai.
22:20 [Music]
22:23 Now it's time for Lipton Tea Skills Time.
