00:00 is my chance to finally surprise him back
00:03 because Garrett won't see the dress
00:05 until the day of the wedding.
00:06 And so I have recruited my friends and family
00:09 to help me find the perfect dress to impress.
00:13 A portion of this video is sponsored by Genesis.
00:17 - Have you had an inspiration or had a couple ideas
00:23 that you have liked in the past
00:25 or what are we kind of thinking or looking for today?
00:27 - Yeah, actually let me get a photo.
00:29 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:30 (sad music)
00:32 - While she's gone.
00:34 I wanna see her in everything.
00:35 - Of course, gotcha.
00:37 - I think it's safe to say I'm an expert and Michelle's not.
00:41 So she's lucky to have me today.
00:43 Have I ever planned a wedding?
00:45 No.
00:46 Have I ever been married?
00:48 No.
00:49 Does it matter?
00:50 No.
00:51 - I did a music video where I actually got to wear
00:54 a bunch of different bridal gowns from India.
00:56 And this one was my favorite.
00:58 - Oh, okay.
00:59 - It's a two piece open back.
01:01 - Really pretty.
01:02 - It's like an off white,
01:03 but still has like the beading and--
01:05 - A traditional gold work and so on.
01:07 - Yeah. - Yeah, definitely.
01:08 - My goal is to take the traditional Western wedding dress
01:12 and the traditional Indian langar
01:14 and smash them together to try and find
01:16 the perfect midpoint of the two
01:18 to represent and honor both sides of my family.
01:21 - Oh my God, you have one behind the counter like ready.
01:25 - I'm all ready, I'm ready for you.
01:26 This piece actually just came in.
01:29 It's absolutely stunning, stunning work on it.
01:32 It's in an off white base.
01:34 (screams)
01:35 - I'm already excited. - It's so pretty.
01:37 - Yeah.
01:37 - Oh my God, this is so crazy.
01:40 - What are your expectations for this dress, mom?
01:42 - For her to look gorgeous in it.
01:44 My name is Laura and I'm Michelle's mom.
01:48 I'm here today to help her decide on a dress
01:52 or just partake in the fun.
01:54 - Oh my gosh.
01:56 - Oh my gosh, how beautiful.
01:57 - Wow.
01:59 - Gorgeous.
02:00 - So beautiful, Michelle.
02:03 Do a little spin.
02:04 Oh my gosh, can I do the thing that they do
02:07 in the bridal shows where they're like,
02:09 you know, they like do this thing?
02:11 (laughing)
02:13 - It's so weird to see myself.
02:14 - In a wedding dress?
02:15 - Yeah, I don't know.
02:17 - The ring feel a little heavier right now?
02:19 (laughing)
02:21 It sparkles though.
02:23 - I love the sparkle.
02:24 This dress seemed to check all the boxes,
02:27 but for some reason I wasn't wowed.
02:29 - That is so gorgeous, Michelle.
02:34 Oh my gosh.
02:36 (screaming)
02:39 Wow.
02:40 - It's a little easier to move around in.
02:42 - You wanna do a dance test?
02:43 Bring it around town.
02:48 - And this dupueta is also really pretty
02:50 because it's really like a heavier dupueta too
02:52 and has really nice tassels with it.
02:55 - The traditional Indian langa consists of three parts.
02:58 The langa, a long embroidered skirt,
03:01 the choli, a midriff bearing blouse
03:03 cut to fit tightly to the body,
03:05 and the dupueta, a pleated shawl that can be worn
03:08 in a variety of ways, including as a veil.
03:12 Indian bridal langas are traditionally red
03:14 to represent new beginnings, love, passion, and prosperity.
03:18 However, I've been trying on white langas
03:21 as a way to incorporate the Western style.
03:23 Personally, I prefer the organza
03:26 and I like the sparkle on the other dress.
03:31 I don't know, there's something about,
03:33 I love the sparkly on the other dress.
03:35 - I would say most of the brides that we work with
03:37 are pretty stressed out.
03:38 This is such an important day for them.
03:39 They're not okay with settling for something
03:41 really small or settling for something that's nice.
03:44 They want the perfect thing for them.
03:45 So that poses to be a really stressful situation
03:47 because how do you find the perfect outfit?
03:50 - Wow.
03:53 - Do, do, do, do, do. - Oh my God.
03:55 - Do, do, do, do.
04:01 - This is my favorite one.
04:02 I like really love the color.
04:05 I love all of the work on this first organza.
04:10 I really like it, yeah.
04:15 I keep looking at it.
04:16 I really feel like this is like the midpoint
04:21 of Western and Indian.
04:24 - This was my favorite Lenga thus far,
04:27 but I still wasn't fully sold.
04:29 So we decided to continue the search
04:31 by heading to Lovela Bridal,
04:33 a more traditionally Western dress shop
04:36 to see if we could find that perfect midpoint dress.
04:39 What makes Lovela so unique
04:41 is our over 6,000 square foot space.
04:44 We feature a really, really large selection of designers.
04:47 So brides travel from all over
04:49 to see everything under one roof.
04:51 - Wow.
04:51 Yeah.
04:55 - She's confused.
04:59 - Confused was an understatement
05:01 because this was the first dress I tried on
05:03 that had been completely different
05:05 from what I originally imagined.
05:08 - You look like a whole woman.
05:10 - So what do we love about it?
05:11 What do we hate about it?
05:11 Or do we love everything about it?
05:13 - I love that it hugs me
05:14 and that it's like fitted at the waist.
05:16 I'm just like in awe of how well you carry sparkle
05:19 'cause like not everyone.
05:21 - I love sparkle.
05:22 - I don't think I'm a huge fan of the collar.
05:25 - I kind of agree the neckline feels a little heavy.
05:28 - Like Victorian in a way almost.
05:30 - Not even Victorian, it just feels a little like heavy.
05:33 - I'm thinking of October,
05:35 what the weather's gonna be like.
05:38 Are you gonna be a little cold?
05:40 - I'm not worried about that.
05:41 - Sunset.
05:43 - I'm worried about how I'm gonna look, mom.
05:45 - Yay!
05:46 - I often find that brides actually end up
05:49 picking the complete opposite of what they came in
05:51 showing me that they wanted.
05:53 I would say like one out of 10 brides
05:55 actually ends up buying what she came in
05:57 thinking she wanted.
05:58 - Seeing the potential benefits of being more open-minded,
06:02 I decided to try on a few wild cards.
06:05 - Oh my God!
06:07 I think I might need a strap
06:09 because I'm not genetically enhanced in this area enough,
06:13 I don't think.
06:14 - At the end of the first day, I had determined that
06:16 from the Western shopping experience
06:18 I loved the fitted mermaid look,
06:20 deep V and classic white.
06:23 And from the Indian designers,
06:24 I liked the multi-piece linga and of course, sparkle.
06:28 Okay, mom, what do you think?
06:30 - Bedazzled nipples.
06:32 - What?
06:32 Are they bedazzled?
06:34 And while my nipples were indeed bedazzled,
06:38 I still had not found the dress.
06:40 So channeling my inner Leo,
06:42 instead of sitting down to pause and reflect on everything,
06:45 I took the approach of more is better.
06:48 Over the next year,
06:49 I tried on an estimated 100 bridal gowns.
06:53 And with our wedding day continually being pushed
06:55 because of the pandemic,
06:57 I had plenty of time to think, procrastinate and backtrack.
07:01 What do you do with a leg slit?
07:02 Do you just like-
07:03 - Yeah, you hold yourself up.
07:04 I'm getting like nightgown vibes almost.
07:06 - Haunting.
07:07 - Haunting?
07:08 - I could be haunting you.
07:09 I can make decisions.
07:10 - I'm proud.
07:11 - Are you indecisive?
07:12 - Well, Garrett's really helpful.
07:14 - Okay.
07:17 - There's no Garrett here today.
07:18 So far, have you gotten any like strong-
07:21 - So you know, like any spiritual experiences yet?
07:23 - We'll keep going.
07:24 We're getting closer though.
07:25 - Yeah.
07:26 - I feel it.
07:27 - Next.
07:28 - They all just kind of like blend together.
07:29 Does anyone else feel that way?
07:30 - These are all the choices for fabric.
07:33 - Just a few.
07:34 - Okay. We need a little luck here.
07:35 - Okay.
07:36 - She looks expensive.
07:38 You know what I mean?
07:39 - She does.
07:40 - You look like money.
07:43 - In case you didn't know, wedding gowns are expensive.
07:45 So thank you so much to Genesis
07:46 for sponsoring this portion of the video.
07:48 Behind me is the Genesis GV80.
07:50 And the first thing you'll notice
07:51 is the bold athletic exterior.
07:54 Low profile, wide stance, and stunning exterior lighting.
07:57 But the interior is my personal favorite part.
08:00 Inspired by the traditional Korean hanok houses,
08:04 the interior is designed to give the feeling
08:05 of openness and comfort to showcase
08:07 the beauty of white space.
08:09 The GV80 comes with intuitive safety features
08:11 and it's decked out with convenient tech,
08:13 including a cloud connected multimedia platform,
08:16 active noise control, 3D cluster,
08:19 five or seven passengers seating configurations,
08:21 power adjustable second row,
08:23 and power closing doors that are very satisfying.
08:27 You can explore the GV80 via my link below.
08:29 And thank you again so much to Genesis
08:30 for sponsoring this portion of the video
08:32 and literally making my wedding possible.
08:34 And now I've really got to find my dress.
08:37 But even after 100 wedding gowns,
08:40 I still felt no closer to finding
08:42 that perfect midpoint dress.
08:44 Mostly because I was so committed
08:46 to finding a hybrid white Indian inspired gown.
08:49 That was until I visited Shyamal and Bhumika,
08:52 a very traditional Indian Lenga store
08:55 known for their brilliant designs and colors.
08:59 Wow.
08:59 That's gorgeous.
09:05 - I know.
09:06 - Wow.
09:12 (laughing)
09:14 - I wasn't expecting to like the heavy embroidery
09:16 as much as I do.
09:18 - I didn't even entertain the idea of a traditional red dress
09:22 - It's so sparkly.
09:23 - I love the sparkles.
09:24 I love the sparkles.
09:26 It's honestly just kind of weird seeing myself
09:29 in red. - In red, right?
09:32 - And like in a dress that is similar
09:34 to the one mom wore at your wedding.
09:37 - I can't decide if I should wear a white
09:40 or a red gown now, you know?
09:42 - Yeah.
09:43 - Can you imagine this in white?
09:44 I don't know that it would have the same effect.
09:46 - It's two totally different effects.
09:48 - Yeah.
09:49 - White is meant to be humble and pure
09:52 and this is like power.
09:56 - Well, I do like looking powerful.
09:58 I don't mind that.
09:59 But this is still a really emotional experience.
10:03 It feels really connected to like Dottie Ma
10:07 and you and what you wore at your wedding.
10:11 - Yeah, you do look a lot like mom.
10:15 - Like seeing myself as all of these other powerful women
10:19 in my family.
10:20 - Being mixed race, I have consistently existed
10:25 in a strange liminal space as the intersection
10:28 of my family's two cultures.
10:31 Not white enough to be considered white
10:33 and not Indian enough to be fully Indian.
10:36 Seeing myself in the traditional red attire
10:40 made me feel like I was a part of something
10:42 I had always existed awkwardly on the outskirts of.
10:45 At my wedding, I had wanted to incorporate the culture
10:49 of my soon to be husband.
10:51 And then I also wanted to bring my own personal culture
10:56 into his life.
10:57 So we had two separate weddings.
10:59 I knew I didn't wanna do two full separate ceremonies.
11:02 And so I started looking into the modern trend
11:04 of brides having two outfits,
11:07 one for the ceremony and one for the reception.
11:10 Now, typically the second outfit is a bit more casual
11:13 or easier to dance in.
11:14 But I thought, what if I wore a white Western gown
11:18 for the ceremony?
11:19 And then as a complete surprise to the guests,
11:22 revealed a second outfit,
11:24 a fully blinged out red Indian langar for the reception.
11:29 This would allow me to fully honor each side of my family
11:33 and give each culture the space to shine individually
11:36 rather than trying to force them into one.
11:40 Like I feel like I have my whole life.
11:42 So I went back to the stores I visited
11:45 a year and a half prior to make my final decisions.
11:49 For the Indian langar, I loved the color
11:52 of the last red dress I tried on,
11:54 but wanted to change the cut.
11:56 And so I found what I believed to be the dress,
12:00 but in purple?
12:02 Oh man.
12:03 (laughing)
12:07 Wow.
12:11 Wowie wowie.
12:12 - This is crazy.
12:13 - Very beautiful.
12:15 - Oh my gosh. - Oh my gosh.
12:16 Oh my God.
12:19 Yeah.
12:21 Oh, I'm obsessed with the way that looks.
12:25 That's so cool.
12:27 This is gonna be the dress, right?
12:30 Is it what it feels like?
12:31 But just like red.
12:32 - I think maybe. - Maybe.
12:35 - It's tough to beat.
12:37 - Yeah, and 'cause you're gonna also have like jewels
12:40 and themes. - It's gonna be sparkle town.
12:42 - Sparkle town.
12:43 - Please answer.
12:47 - She answered.
12:47 - Hey.
12:49 - Hey mom.
12:50 You're here with Daniel and everyone.
12:53 We're filming right now.
12:56 And I wanted to show you
12:59 what I think is a really incredible dress.
13:03 Now there's a disclaimer.
13:04 It's purple, but you have to imagine it in red.
13:09 - I have to imagine it in red?
13:11 - Yes.
13:12 (laughing)
13:13 Imagine it in this color, okay?
13:15 - Oh my Lord.
13:17 - Oh my Lord.
13:19 - Okay, ready?
13:20 - That is so beautiful.
13:24 Wow.
13:26 It's so classic.
13:29 You know me, I just love classic things.
13:31 It's just gorgeous.
13:33 - Look at this legit princess.
13:35 - It's gonna make me cry now.
13:36 Oh my gosh, it's gonna make me cry.
13:38 - Well, I think we have found the cut.
13:41 - Woo hoo hoo!
13:43 (clapping)
13:45 How exciting.
13:46 - Oh my God, this is so cool.
13:48 - I think Jared's gonna really love it.
13:50 - Oh, he's gonna lose it.
13:52 - This is it.
13:57 This is it.
13:59 (laughing)
14:01 - Yeah.
14:02 - I am going to have to do something
14:06 I never thought I was gonna have to do,
14:08 which is pick a dress and order it
14:11 without seeing it in the color.
14:14 And though I am incredibly nervous
14:16 just hoping that the dress will look good
14:18 with all of the modifications,
14:19 including the color being completely different,
14:22 I had to trust this was the right choice
14:25 and would turn out okay
14:26 when I will receive the dress in a few months.
14:29 And as far as the Western gown,
14:30 because I was finally able to allow myself the freedom
14:33 to explore the classic white Western style,
14:36 I quickly zeroed in on what I wanted.
14:39 And our reaction says it all.
14:41 (screaming)
14:42 - Sorry, I'm screaming.
14:43 This is cool.
14:44 - I don't even wanna touch it.
14:46 Oh, and it's so sparkly, Michelle, like you wanted.
14:48 - I love sparkles.
14:50 - I know you do.
14:50 - I love it, it's so beautiful.
14:52 - And the only thing left was to wait
14:55 for the wedding day itself to surprise Garrett.
14:59 - Oh my God.
15:00 - With not one, but two wedding dresses.
15:04 If you want to see how the final dresses
15:08 and our full wedding day turned out,
15:10 you can check out our wedding video here.
15:13 (upbeat music)
15:15 you
