00:00 The boxwoods are being trimmed today, and it's the first cooler day 65 is our high today
00:04 It is gonna warm back up, but that's perfect
00:06 We trim the boxwoods on a cool day have some mild days right after it before it gets really cold
00:11 Hopefully they'll acclimate and we won't have much tip damage from cold temperatures, so I'm very happy about that
00:16 Samantha is out here with me kind of bounding around we are going to start removing some sod
00:22 Paul and Aaron are gonna be working on that in this area right behind me
00:26 Because Pedro and his crew are gonna be putting in the rock pathway that leads from the Hartley to our house
00:31 Which we've already talked to you about that before
00:33 I think we even showed you we painted the lines and all of that so that process is going to be started today
00:39 We're also going to be taking out these roses which seems like a shame right now because they're starting to look pretty again
00:46 You know during the summer they lull out for weeks and weeks, and there's not much color on them
00:50 But the problem with these is that almost all of them are climbing roses
00:53 And it is a beast to try to keep them down their iceberg climbers if any of you have grown those before
00:59 You know how aggressive they grow how quickly they grow they're beautiful
01:03 But just in the wrong spot and because we're going to be redoing the flower beds right here
01:08 We thought let's just get these out all but one before I realized these were all climbing roses. There was a gap
01:14 There's one that had died and so I planted a David Austin tranquility rose in its place
01:18 So I'm gonna dig that one up and hope to move it out somewhere where it can continue to grow and thrive
01:23 But the rest of them will come out so that we can retool this whole flower
01:27 But I think I'd like to have some kind of an evergreen back here kind of an anchor
01:30 Evergreen back here behind the fireplace because in the wintertime. I mean you can see everything around it here. We've got
01:36 Lilac the locust that may have to come out or we're not sure yet
01:41 This viburnum actually keeps most of its leaves during the winter so that is considered your evergreen
01:46 But then there's the redbud maple everything loses its leaves
01:50 So I think I'd like to have some big beautiful structural evergreen right in here
01:54 To kind of backdrop or be the backdrop to the flower beds that go in here and as a quick reminder
01:59 The pathway is going to start here and it's just going to be a gentle curve out to the Hartley all of this area
02:04 That's grass will be flower bed
02:06 There will be flower bed on the right hand side of the walkway, but then we will keep grass some
02:11 But just not this much. There's also a few other roses. I would like to get transplanted
02:15 They are I don't know if that's gonna happen today
02:17 We'll have to see how it goes, but they're the lady gardener roses and they're right along the brick patio
02:23 I'm walking over there to show you
02:25 What you doing, babe?
02:27 Yeah, you playing in the fireplace so right over here they're gorgeous gorgeous roses and I'm kind of thankful
02:34 They're not in full full bloom right now. Otherwise, this would be a lot harder. Look at how gorgeous these are
02:39 Lightly fragrant but beautiful. I love the color of these but you know
02:44 The end goal is to have a boxwood hedge all the way around here and we do have the boxwoods for this space
02:48 But I wanted to save these roses. So we kept the boxwoods
02:52 We've just been watering those in the high tunnel
02:54 But as soon as I can get these things moved then we can start in with our boxwood hedge right in this area
03:00 It's just at the brick patio in order to make it the size
03:03 We needed it to be so that was all balanced
03:05 It had to come over and go quite a ways into the flower bed right there
03:08 and it's actually a great time to transplant because it's cool enough to where it's not going to
03:12 Be as big of a shock on the plant
03:15 But it's warm enough to where they may have a chance to root in a little bit before winter sets in
03:19 I'm gonna be cutting these roses back pretty hard
03:21 So that the root system doesn't have a huge amount of leafy growth and top growth to support
03:26 It can focus a little bit more on root development. Let me show you this tranquility rose though
03:31 It's hard to distinguish anything in this area
03:33 Like it looks really pretty from the first view that I showed you because it seems like all the flowers are on this side
03:39 Isn't that so pretty but you look at it from the front and it kind of always looks like that
03:44 But most of the summer or a good part of the summer. There's no color
03:47 It's just a bunch of like arching stems and kind of a messy messy deal
03:51 Oh the other thing there's Douglas the other thing the icebergs do seem to suffer from chlorosis
03:57 So you can see the lighter color green with the darker green veining
04:01 Not as bad as some years because I think Aaron maybe has been treating them or had did treat them in the beginning of the season
04:06 But the tranquility rose right here nice and deep green and look at that flower. Oh
04:11 My goodness that super creamy color kind of skewing yellow in the center. It's so pretty
04:18 So yeah, you can see how long this stem is. I'm gonna be taking these back to like 18 inches. I think
04:23 Pretty far back. Okay, so I'm gonna be working on cutting back and digging up roses moving them to a new location while Paul and Aaron
04:31 Work on grass removal on this side of the yard, and I think they're gonna use the tractor and hopefully just scrape it up
04:37 Hope hopefully it's an easy process. I think I'll go ahead and paint my line probably right in here
04:42 Yes, so we'll keep the grass on this side and then from here ish over it'll be gone
04:49 And we were gonna just go ahead and scrape all of it up
04:52 Which might be what we end up doing when the new sprinklers go in
04:54 But just in case that doesn't happen if we keep a little bit of this the grass here
05:00 It might be a case where we can just go ahead and keep it and just you know
05:03 Put the new sprinklers in and go for it
05:05 Or we'll do it in the spring when we can reseed and have plenty of time to get grass going
05:09 We just are a little concerned that we'll have a mud patch going on in here throughout the winter months and trying to avoid that
05:15 So here we go

06:20 - All right guys, wanted to take a quick break
06:21 to give you a progress report.
06:23 So he's just backing up, putting the blade down
06:25 and scraping that grass right up.
06:27 He's trying to be careful not to get too deep.
06:30 Oh boy.
06:31 That's one way to lift sod right there.
06:35 Anyway, I ended up digging four roses in this bed.
06:41 There were three Pope John Paul II roses.
06:44 They're beautiful white hybrid tea.
06:46 I completely forgot they were in here.
06:48 So I went ahead and dug all three of those
06:50 and they were all in a line right behind the Tranquility.
06:52 Tranquility was here and then the other three
06:54 were right lined up behind it.
06:56 And I did cut a few stems that were looking pretty.
06:59 Look at these.
07:00 They are so gorgeous.
07:02 So these right here, well, most of them, except for this,
07:05 this one's Tranquility, the rest are the Pope John Paul II.
07:08 Amazing fragrance on these.
07:11 Really long, beautiful, strong stems.
07:13 I'm gonna be happy to have those
07:17 somewhere else in the garden.
07:18 And you know, usually we offer anything
07:20 that we're digging out to family or friends
07:21 if they wanna come grab it.
07:22 But I don't think in this case
07:24 that it's gonna be worth the time trying to dig them up
07:26 in any sort of salvageable manner.
07:28 You know, and roses, especially roses like that,
07:31 they grow so fast that if we should find a place later on
07:34 to put icebergs, we can just get new ones.
07:36 We usually try to save about everything that we can
07:39 or give it away.
07:40 But you know, sometimes you gotta draw the line.
07:43 Know it's worth it.
07:44 All right, I'm gonna go plant these four roses
07:45 and then we'll come back for the lady gardeners.

11:08 All right guys, we are ready to call it for the day
11:23 and it has been a day.
11:25 Very productive, I love it.
11:26 Look at this.
11:27 Oh my gosh, what a huge amount of work.
11:30 Erin, Paul and Bethany tackled this area today
11:35 while I was working on transplanting the roses
11:37 and other things and it just,
11:40 it, I mean, I don't wanna say it looks good,
11:42 but it will look good.
11:43 It's the next step to getting it to look good.
11:45 It's been kind of an interesting space this year
11:47 because when we put in the Hartley
11:49 and the area surrounding it,
11:51 we did have to cap a few sprinklers.
11:53 So there was some patches of grass,
11:54 like fairly large patches that just died
11:56 and we just let them die because they weren't getting water
11:59 because we knew we wanted to put in a pathway
12:01 and expand the flower beds and that sort of thing.
12:03 So anyway, it's kind of nice to see
12:05 those dead patches scraped up,
12:07 knowing that the next step is gonna happen here
12:09 in a few days.
12:10 So Pedro and his crew will be here next week.
12:12 They'll level this all out, kind of clean it up
12:14 and then we'll have a nice pathway
12:16 that just like gently leads you to the Hartley.
12:18 And then once the path is in,
12:19 we'll be able to maybe even refine the grass shape
12:22 a little bit more.
12:22 We kind of just made a clean line
12:24 and made it swooped so it's easy to mow.
12:27 Anyway, we'll get a feel for this space
12:29 and be able to refine it further, but my goodness.
12:33 Oh, and the tractor was very, very helpful in this space,
12:37 but I know toward the end
12:38 when they needed a little bit of a cleaner line,
12:40 Paul and Bethany were using hand tools to do it.
12:42 So much work.
12:43 And then there's my row of roses,
12:45 all four of them that came out of this space.
12:47 I'm really happy to have moved those
12:49 and I think that they'll do really well
12:51 in their new location.
12:52 And then these icebergs, you know,
12:55 they just are the wrong plant for this spot.
12:57 Sometimes that happens and sometimes you plant
13:00 something thinking it's gonna be the perfect thing
13:02 for this spot and it turns out to not quite be.
13:04 And you know, if that happens, take it out,
13:06 put something else in that's gonna be nice.
13:09 And this is the other space I tackled today.
13:11 Doesn't that look different?
13:13 Well, I started to trim on that wisteria
13:15 and then I just kept trimming and trimming
13:17 because I knew, you know, once I got those roses out,
13:20 I was kind of sizing up where the boxwoods are gonna go
13:23 and they need to go right along,
13:25 like just to the inside of the trunk of the wisteria
13:28 and the foliage had grown, you know,
13:31 it was very thick all the way to the ground.
13:33 So I started hacking away and thought, you know,
13:35 we're gonna have to keep this lifted anyway
13:37 and it'll be kind of nice to see the structure
13:38 of the trunk, honestly.
13:40 Anyway, I'm gonna have to get a ladder out
13:41 because I just trimmed it as high up as I could.
13:43 It's like a big poof on the top now.
13:46 Kind of looks funny, but I'll take that canopy
13:48 in a little bit more tame, I guess,
13:52 and we'll move the peach tree.
13:54 It's still hooked to drip.
13:55 That's why I left it there because I didn't want to have
13:57 to figure out a spot to plant it today
13:59 'cause I was just kind of running out of time.
14:01 But I got the four lady gardener roses out.
14:04 I got the nepeta out and moved.
14:06 I'll show you where that ended up as well as the yarrow.
14:09 What else is in here?
14:10 There were five serendipity alliums.
14:12 I texted Erin's mom and said,
14:13 "Hey, I'm digging these alliums up.
14:15 "Do you want 'em?"
14:15 So she came right over and grabbed 'em for me
14:18 for her garden.
14:18 So they will live on in a new space.
14:20 And the opening over here, so there will be boxwoods
14:23 that come all the way to about right here.
14:26 And then it'll be open to here
14:29 and then the boxwoods will take off again.
14:31 Which means I do still need to move a few things
14:33 from this area.
14:34 This wisteria was here when we moved in.
14:36 I thought I cut it out or dug it out and I clearly didn't.
14:39 So I need to remove that.
14:40 Also need to dig up this boxwood, which is quite pretty.
14:44 It's a grand blandy.
14:47 I love the shape of it.
14:49 I actually wonder if that wisteria was helping
14:51 keep a nice, tidy shape.
14:54 But we'll dig that out.
14:55 We need to dig this hosta right here
14:58 and probably these two
14:59 and just kind of clear this whole space out.
15:02 And these, we can just pop over here somewhere.
15:04 Oh, it's looking so good.
15:06 So now let's take a ride around
15:08 and I will show you where all the roses ended up.
15:11 Oh, and the boxwoods look so good.
15:18 Oh my goodness, so tidy.
15:20 I wanted to stop along here just to show you
15:22 where the nephretta and the yarrow ended up,
15:24 kind of down the way here.
15:25 Just a few little plants.
15:26 So we've got the ornamental oregano there.
15:28 I popped the firefly.
15:30 I can't remember, is it?
15:31 It's a pink one.
15:33 Right in behind these nephretta,
15:35 cat's pajamas right here, which are a lower one.
15:37 And I will divide some other ones that we have
15:39 and bring in a few more for this drift right here.
15:43 And then we're gonna put some iris right there.
15:44 These Mary Rose roses are just gorgeous.
15:47 Ambridge Rose.
15:49 Perfection.
15:54 Okay, right in this space where we just planted the pine
15:58 and the Veronica, we've got the four Lady Gardener roses.
16:03 See how far I cut them back?
16:05 I just feel like, you know, I've done it before
16:08 where I haven't cut them back
16:09 and they just immediately wilt.
16:10 There's just too much top growth
16:13 for the root system to support
16:15 because roses are hard to dig.
16:17 First off, where I was digging these in particular,
16:20 it was really dry.
16:21 In fact, I had Erin check the irrigation system
16:24 because it felt like it's been a long time
16:26 since that flower bed had seen water
16:27 'cause the dirt was just puffing off of everything.
16:30 Anyway, they just are hard to get a big root ball,
16:34 especially if it's really dry.
16:36 Everything kind of just falls off of the roots.
16:37 So anyway, if they've got a huge leaf canopy on top
16:41 and just a little bitty,
16:42 and just a little itty bitty roots down below,
16:44 that's just not a good combination.
16:45 And they might surprise you.
16:46 I planted the Vanessa Bells that Erin and I dug out.
16:49 So last year, and we barely got any roots at all.
16:53 And then I planted them huge, big canopies
16:55 and left them and it was hot out.
16:57 And they all looked like they had pretty much,
17:00 well, two of them looked dead
17:01 and one of them looked pretty dead.
17:03 And all three of them are alive and they look good.
17:06 So you never know, that's why it's always worth a shot.
17:09 But I think these are gonna be gorgeous right here.
17:11 That beautiful creamy color with the purple in front
17:14 and the Dervella.
17:15 This is a Kodiak Fresh Blooms Yellow.
17:18 I don't know if there are any blooms on it right now,
17:20 but anyway, just a really pretty space.
17:24 Right here, we have the Tranquility Rose
17:29 and you saw how big it was wanting to get.
17:31 So it will do a good job of filling in this space
17:33 right here.
17:34 We've got a lot of space around it.
17:38 So we can start filling in with some stuff,
17:40 but I think that'll be a really nice shrub
17:43 right by that beautiful Totem Pole Panicum.
17:46 And the other three ended up just a little ways
17:48 down this way, right here.
17:50 Pope John Paul II, three of them right in there.
17:53 I love to see that the leaves still look really good
17:55 this evening.
17:56 I think they're gonna do well.
17:58 In this space, we've got Coralberry.
18:00 There's some beautiful Beyond Midnight Curiopteris,
18:03 Desert Plains Pennisetum.
18:04 This is a Norway Spruce of some kind
18:06 that does get quite large, but it grows really slow.
18:10 In fact, yeah, you can see it's new growth from this year.
18:13 Just a few inches every year.
18:14 We also have the Bitter Honey Heliopsis
18:16 and Cat's Pajamas Nepeta and some other things.
18:20 But I kinda wanna fill in right here.
18:22 I had some Sombrero Gold Echinacea and some Agostache,
18:26 both of which didn't thrive in this space.
18:28 I think it would be really pretty to do
18:30 just Echinacea purpurea,
18:31 just the classic purple Echinacea right in here.
18:35 Just a big old drift of it.
18:36 And I'm trying to think if that's it.
18:37 I think that's it.
18:38 I think we saw all the plants that I moved.
18:40 Boy, when you go around and look at it,
18:41 it doesn't look like as much work as it felt like.
18:44 I think digging stuff out can be,
18:46 especially like established shrubs with thorns,
18:50 that's the other thing.
18:51 I wanted to show you the gloves I was using.
18:53 One of them I ended up taking inside.
18:55 This is the glove of my glove of choice
18:57 when I'm using or working with roses.
18:59 These are a Felco brand and I don't know what number.
19:01 Maybe we can put on the screen.
19:03 They're not their actual rose gloves.
19:05 They do have a specific glove for roses,
19:07 but these are awesome.
19:09 I can just, I can do whatever I want.
19:11 I can touch the thorniest stem
19:13 and they're not making it through these gloves.
19:15 I just love them.
19:16 Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed this video.
19:19 I've got some more plant moving to do,
19:20 as you can see over there by the brick patio,
19:23 but it'll be so nice to get that done
19:24 and get the boxwoods in,
19:26 kind of tighten that area up.
19:28 And I really do need to get after my fall containers.
19:31 Oh my gosh.
19:31 I feel like things are just moving so fast,
19:34 but we'll get it done.
19:35 We'll get to it.
19:36 Anyway, thank you guys so much for watching this video.
19:38 I do hope you enjoyed it
19:39 and we will see you in the next one.
