00:00 Gilbo Beach suspect Rex Huerman reads about his case in newspapers and refuses visit requests
00:05 from true crime fans.
00:06 Gilbo Beach suspect Rex Huerman has been in jail since July on charges of killing three
00:11 women.
00:12 The New York Times reported Huerman receives visit requests from true crime fans and journalists.
00:17 Investigators have also been interviewing jailed women on their encounters with him,
00:20 NYT reported.
00:21 The man suspected of killing at least four women whose remains were later found buried
00:25 on a Long Island beach has spent much of his time behind bars reading about his case and
00:30 refusing visit requests from journalists and true crime fans, according to the Suffolk
00:34 County Sheriff.
00:35 Rex Huerman, 59, has been in the Suffolk County Jail since July.
00:39 He is charged with the murders of three women who went missing in 2009 and 2010 and has
00:45 pleaded not guilty to all counts.
00:47 Sheriff Errol Tulin gave the New York Times insight into Huerman's daily routine in jail.
00:52 Tulin said Huerman is often brought to a secluded section of the exercise yard for an hour at
00:56 a time where he walks laps alone.
00:58 The Times also reported that Huerman reads books from the jail's library and watches
01:02 a TV controlled by jail guards outside his cell.
01:05 According to the Times, Huerman has not received any visits from his wife and children.
01:10 Authorities are far from finished with their investigation into the Gilbo Beach homicides.
01:14 In total, 11 victims' remains have been found at or near the Gilbo Beach area.
01:18 First in August, investigators identified one of the victims as Karen Vergara, who disappeared
01:23 in 1996, though authorities have not said whether Huerman is suspected in her death.
01:28 The Times reported that investigators have been interviewing female jail inmates in Long
01:33 Island who have previously worked as escorts.
01:35 All three Gilbo Beach victims Huerman has been charged with killing were escorts, and
01:39 authorities suspect that Huerman may have frequented many sex workers in Suffolk County.
01:44 The county's district attorney, Ray Tierney, even said during a July press conference that
01:48 authorities moved quickly to arrest Huerman once they realized he was seeing escorts and
01:52 potentially endangering them.
01:54 "We learned the defendant was using these alternate identities and alternate instruments
01:58 to continue to patronize sex workers, which of course made us very nervous," Tierney
02:02 said.
02:03 In the months since Huerman's arrest, jail officials have interviewed about 120 female
02:08 inmates so far, 10 of whom have said they encountered Huerman in various ways, the Times
02:12 reported.
02:13 According to the newspaper, some received online date requests from Huerman and others
02:17 met up with him in person.
02:19 Tuland told the Times that two of those 10 women reported having frightening intimate
02:23 encounters with Huerman, though neither were injured.
02:25 Huerman's defense attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.
02:30 Gilbo Beach killings suspect Rex Huerman has petitioned the court to reclaim more than
02:35 280 guns that were seized from his home in July so he can sell them and financially help
02:39 his family while in jail.
02:41 The guns, which defense attorney Sabato Caponi said have significant financial value, could
02:45 be sold to provide a temporary but urgently needed respite from the financial hardships
02:50 afflicting the Huerman family.
02:52 The motion filed last Thursday states, "The firearms were seized in July when Suffolk
02:56 County police searched their home in a wantonly destructive and reckless manner," the motion
03:01 adds.
03:02 In as much as Rex Huerman remains incarcerated and his pistol license has been temporarily
03:06 suspended, this court should order the return of the seized property to a person designated
03:11 by Rex Huerman, individual or licensed gun dealer, who may legally possess the items,
03:16 Caponi wrote.
03:17 Huerman, a 59-year-old architectural consultant who lived with his family in Masopeco Park
03:22 in Nassau County, has been behind bars since his arrest in July on three charges of murder.
03:27 He has pleaded not guilty to the killings of Melissa Barthelomy in 2009 and Megan Waterman
03:32 and Amber Costello in 2010.
03:34 The case stems from the discovery of nearly a dozen sets of human remains along Long Island's
03:39 south shore between 2010 and 2011.
03:42 Four of the victims were found buried near each other off Ocean Parkway in Gilgo Beach,
03:46 and they were dubbed the "Gilgo Four."
03:48 Barthelomy, Waterman, and Costello make up three of the "Giglo Four," and Huerman is
03:53 the prime suspect in the death of the fourth.
