Julian Fuhs und sein Orchester - Black Bottom

Little is known about Julian Fuhs (1891, Berlin, Germany-1975, Miami Beach, FL, USA ), a nearly forgotten Jazz pianist of the 1920s. Here's a photo of Julian Fuhs, who grew up in Berlin and studied at the Stern Conservatory. In 1919, he emigrated to the USA and in 1916 became an American citizen. In 1924, he returned to Berlin and formed a Jazz orchestra - 'Julian Fuhs Follies Band', which played Berlin cafe restaurants (Mercedes Palace, Eden Hotel, Palace at the Zoo, Femina, etc.), and also worked in various cabarets and musical revues. While in Berlin, during 1925 to 1930, his band recorded numerous times. In September 1931, he opened his own restaurant ('Bei Julian Fuhs'). In 1933 he left Berlin, when, because of his Jewish religion, several assaults had been made on his restaurant. After stop-overs in Austria and Czechoslovakia, he traveled to the USA in 1936. Regretfully, he found no great success as a musician in the USA. This outstanding recording of an epitomal 20's tune was made in 1926.
