00:00 Did you know that siu pao originated right here in Surinban? Join us to uncover the story behind
00:05 these savory pork buns and why locals still line up here daily to enjoy them.
00:10 While these flaky pork-filled pastries are now found across the nation,
00:21 the original recipe belongs to 62-year-old Teh Yok Keng, the owner of Siu Pao Master.
00:29 Established in 1988, this corner shop lot in the charming town of Surinban has become a magnet for
00:36 both locals and visitors hungry for baked treats. Of course, the standout attraction here is their
00:43 siu pao, handmade on site and consistently selling out day after day. So how did it all begin?
00:50 In the 1970s, Teh's mother Lok Mei Ying ran a confectionery near the old Surinban market,
00:58 where as a child, Teh would join her in baking and selling treats. When the market relocated
01:05 and negatively affected her mother's business, Teh in her early 20s at the time got creative.
01:11 By taking her mother's pork filling from the bread bun known as chan pao and incorporating
01:18 it into pastry dough, Teh came up with what would become the country's beloved siu pao.
01:25 This innovative move skyrocketed the business, leading to the establishment of her own store,
01:31 Siu Pao Master, years later. Today, her shop offers a variety of other best-selling treats,
01:38 including kueh bahunu and egg tarts, all of which are loved by customers from near and far.
01:44 And just as Teh started her journey by assisting her mother, her daughter Lok Muen Yee now carries
01:52 on the tradition as the next generation siu pao master.
01:56 So if you're ever in Surinban, make sure you don't leave without trying their delicious
02:04 and famous siu pao. Divya Ragu, FMT Lifestyle.
