00:00 fellas respect the bathroom and dressing rooms want a good clean fight protect
00:03 yourselves at all times obey my commands at all times touch gloves good luck
00:06 about here here we go Nathan Watson Declan Kelly a little bit of Australasian
00:15 middleweight title action and here we go
00:23 Nathan Watson in the white Declan Kelly in the green and the black we are
00:30 scheduled for eight three-minute rounds two very different fighters two very
00:37 different physiques and two very different styles yeah you're a hundred
00:42 percent right Andy but the last couple of fights Declan's been caught up at the
00:46 fight and that's been his downfall so Nathan Watson will be trying to repeat
00:50 that again trying to catch him in the scrap because when he gets caught in the
00:54 scrap he loses all these advantages obviously
00:58 Nathan last three fights has suffered two losses a split decision loss to
01:07 Man Jain Dutt which was a surprise it was it wasn't seen and a TKO loss to
01:14 tonight's main eventer Dan Hill
01:19 few changes few tweaks to the game plan to the training for Nathan yeah that last loss
01:27 was a big shock like I said Andy I mean Dan Hill you can understand that loss
01:31 that I mean yeah that last one he just really didn't get going and that's why
01:36 you can see he started a lot faster than what he usually does Nathan Watson
01:40 that's a good sign
01:45 it is a very good sign halfway through round number one
01:50 Kelly taller the much taller of the two so in theory he's gonna want to keep his
02:02 distance and if he does keep his distance it makes it really difficult
02:06 for Nathan to land shots without the risk of wearing one. Declan not standing up as tall as we've seen him
02:18 Nathan really nice there just taking that one or two steps in and and then
02:26 throwing shots
02:29 well this will be the case for third time lucky for Declan he's actually
02:35 challenged for this exact title twice and lost twice so he's fighting for the
02:39 Australasian title third time round here tonight so like I said he'll be hoping
02:44 third time lucky
02:47 the wild shots from both guys I thought this would be a much slower start a
02:58 really calculated start but they're both putting it on the line
03:04 I think they started with Nathan Watson usually he is a slow starter like I said
03:08 he's starting to push the fight here and that's creating a fight. The way Nathan
03:15 starts he often continued from what we've seen he continues that mindset and
03:22 a fast start a good thing for Nathan
03:26 [Music]
03:29 you can see some replays from that first round. A good beginning for both boys
03:46 very calculated not too many risks Declan doing everything right so far
03:54 trying to keep it long. There's a good hook there from Watson though. Good to see
04:02 Floyd Masson in the house tonight the IBA Cruiserweight Champion after the war
04:07 he went through to claim that title on our last ace boxing show and Floyd back
04:14 up the crowd pleaser he's back up in September yes healed up ready to go
04:23 [Music]
04:26 and we are ready for round number two and here we go we're sold out here at
04:35 Southport. Great to see boxing just thriving in southeast Queensland once
04:44 again. A lot of people make that possible none more so than the crew at Ace.
04:54 I'd like to thank our sponsors Oxworks, Hanna Lawyers, Wandless Waste Management.
05:03 Head gets rocked back a little bit there by Declan Kelly. Good picking off jab
05:09 from Declan. Head goes back to Watson.
05:16 Be mindful that he can't stay at that mid-range where he is right now. He can be hit very easily by Declan as soon as he throws the punch.
05:25 He's got to either be closer to him or further away.
05:29 You're either in or you're out. That's right.
05:34 And so easy to say that from where we're sitting or where you're sitting so much
05:40 more difficult. I think especially when you are fighting a taller guy than you and a guy that
05:47 it's not an inch or two this is four or five inches taller. A couple of inches
05:53 longer.
05:56 Feeling his way. The full starts here, a lot of feints.
06:03 Gets through on the inside. Nathan when you're fighting a guy that's taller and
06:12 longer like Nathan is here tonight how important is being able to capitalize on
06:17 the counter punch making your opponent miss then making the charge. That's a big thing but the biggest thing for when you're fighting a taller fighter you've got to stay low.
06:26 You've got to stay low because your base has to be strong so you can work your way in.
06:30 If you're too upright and you're getting caught in the way and you're getting
06:34 peppered you're getting rocked and you're constantly getting rocked
06:37 backwards so his base has got to be low, he's got to be strong. It all starts from the foundations.
06:41 This is round number two. We're inside the final minute.
06:55 It's now Watson with his feet firmly planted in the center of the ring making Declan do a lot of the work.
07:09 Just singles at the moment from Watson. A couple of them paying off which is not usually the case.
07:15 Usually with a taller opponent as well you need to throw them in multiples to
07:19 back them up. The first one is just to get your range in and the second
07:24 one and the third one are potentially to hit but the first one usually is just to get you within range.
07:29 Who fought in the right spirit most certainly Nathan Watson. Declan Kelly. Two rounds down for
07:40 Ultratune Pro-Edge Civil and Action Metal Recyclers.
07:44 Another good second round from both boys. Both had their moments. Both different game plans like you said at the start Andy.
07:57 But you can see once again this one will warm up more. It's an 8 by 3 round for the title. The first title on the card so far tonight.
08:09 The Australasian middleweight title up for grabs. That was a really good hook there from Nathan Watson.
08:15 Hopefully we'll see a little bit more of that in the coming rounds.
08:19 About to enter into round number three. Our distance schedule is eight rounds. Paul Tapley is our referee.
08:33 Our three ringside judges Paul Williams, Phil Gregory and Rodney Marsh. Phil Gregory's son tonight.
08:40 Joining us and celebrating a birthday. He's sitting with former Bulldogs Premiership winner.
08:47 A guy that challenged for the Australian middleweight title in the 80's and he got disqualified for headbutting.
08:52 That was at Belmore Oval. Great Billy Johnston is here.
08:57 And sitting with Phil Gregory, John Pellahy's, celebrating his birthday.
09:04 That's something Kelly desperately wants to avoid is getting involved in the clinch.
09:14 It's a lose-lose for the taller fighter more times than not.
09:18 Kelly accelerating across the ring and through his punches. Good left hook from Kelly.
09:25 Yeah, good hook from Watson should I say.
09:28 Really nice shot.
09:30 He's raised the focus tonight. Nathan Watson very different from when we saw him last time against Nanjay Dutt.
09:39 That split decision loss, he was just so relaxed.
09:44 He looked comfortable whether he was having an off day or an off night.
09:48 You never know with athletes but he just wasn't able to jump into it.
09:55 I think he was a little bit humbled that night Andy.
09:57 This is the retaliation here tonight and it's a much better version of him tonight.
10:03 Because he's thrown so much more punches than he did that fight.
10:07 Off night, yeah definitely. Last time around.
10:10 Look out, raise your hands for him.
10:12 Fail. Uppercut there. It looked awkward. I reckon it must have felt awkward too for Declan Kelly.
10:33 He was laid into the punch and Nathan had well and truly moved.
10:38 I think it was hope when Watson took a step in.
10:41 Both guys burning up already. It's been put to good pace.
10:52 One thing I've noticed with Declan Kelly is that he's circling the one way.
10:58 He just circles to his right hand which is dangerous.
11:01 You can see always going left which is going into the power hand of Watson.
11:05 And it means you've really got to stop and prop to get your power hand into distance.
11:12 Here we go.
11:13 There's something that this corner needs to pick up fast because he's starting to make tracks in this ring.
11:21 Body shot and a left hand from Nathan Watson.
11:27 Great way to end the round for a man in the white trunks.
11:32 Young man in the white trunks.
11:35 It's the end of another round here now.
11:38 Hostile at the time of the fight.
11:41 There's lots of racism between our fighters.
11:44 It's a tight matchup between the two.
11:47 It's a tight matchup between the two.
11:49 It's a tight matchup between the two.
11:51 It's a tight matchup between the two.
11:53 It's a tight matchup between the two.
11:55 It's a tight matchup between the two.
11:57 Action building circles across the space.
11:59 It's a tight matchup between the two.
12:04 It's a tight matchup between the two.
12:06 It's a tight matchup between the two.
12:08 It's a tight matchup between the two.
12:10 Guan Li Fong from the Fortitude Fight and Fitness in the corner with Jekyll and Kelly.
12:21 Came into the ring tonight at 7'4" win loss record.
12:27 [BELL RINGS]
12:29 Trying to double up with the left hand to start the round.
12:45 April Watson.
12:54 Watching Ford again. He's really the ring general here.
12:59 And a lot of judges see that as a huge part of the make up in the point scoring system.
13:05 Yeah, especially when there's not many punches being thrown.
13:08 They usually just favour the person that's pushing the fight.
13:18 Kelly circling around to his left. Walks into a left from Watson.
13:24 The closer Watson gets in, the more he makes it a fight.
13:34 Many suggest the more advantage it is to him.
13:40 You can see the shot he's been working on, which is that left hook.
13:44 Obviously it's been his money shot so far here tonight.
13:48 There you go. Jab, then left hook.
13:52 Right hand over the top. Just missing the mark there from Watson.
14:08 Keeping well out of range there is Nathan Watson.
14:13 Compared to the start of the fight where he was in that position.
14:17 We used the term he wasn't in, he wasn't out.
14:20 So he was in danger at all times.
14:22 Yeah, that mid-range is the most dangerous position for a boxer.
14:30 But if nothing's getting thrown back, you're safe.
14:36 Final minute of the round.
14:39 I think Kelly needs to...
14:44 Just let his hands go.
14:46 I was just about to say the same thing.
14:49 He's there in a position to throw, but he's just hesitating too much.
14:52 I know it's over eight rounds and not a short distance.
14:59 The rounds really quickly can get away.
15:03 And you still feel remarkably fresh.
15:07 You end up walking out of the ring with regrets.
15:11 Watson creeping forward.
15:18 I think he's just stealing these rounds.
15:20 Because like you said, he's the ring general.
15:22 He's forcing Kelly backwards.
15:24 Even though there's not many punches separating these rounds.
15:28 He's forcing the fight. He's getting the tick for me.
15:32 Yeah, just stealing each round.
15:35 That's unofficially, of course.
15:38 Rodney Marshfield, Gregory Paul, Williams, they'll make that official decision.
15:42 But when you're stealing each round,
15:45 simply because you're planting your feet in the middle,
15:48 you know that there's more to it.
15:52 You've got more there.
15:54 As we can see, some snippets of round four.
15:58 Like we said, it was Watson coming forward.
16:01 And Kelly on the retreat.
16:03 That was a good attempt of an uppercut there.
16:06 Just missing the mark from Kelly.
16:08 But that is the punch you throw when somebody walks on.
16:12 [Crowd noise]
16:15 [Whistle]
16:18 [Bell ring]
16:27 Off.
16:28 Here we go. We continue on.
16:33 Nathan Watson, Declan Kelly for the Australasian middleweight title.
16:37 Nathan Watson in the white representing the United Fight team
16:40 and John Bastable.
16:42 Declan Kelly in the green and the black.
16:45 Fighting out of fortitude, but fitness.
16:49 That's it from Kelly.
17:02 Still destroying it, the one-shot.
17:09 It's just a jab, it's never the right hand.
17:12 Watson's going with the flow,
17:19 whatever style Declan wants, Nathan is accommodating.
17:24 Sneaky little body shot there from Nathan Watson.
17:28 Yeah, he's just got to start throwing here, Kelly.
17:30 These rounds are slipping, like we said, the previous rounds.
17:34 He just can't afford to do it anymore.
17:36 He's in the right position, but he's just not throwing.
17:38 It's quite frustrating, probably quite frustrating for his coach,
17:41 Kwan Lee Fong, because he's there, but he's just not throwing.
17:47 Good shot there from Watson to the body.
17:50 Here the body shots again.
17:57 Kelly now.
18:01 Right hand, but he's eating a couple of shots there.
18:06 Yeah, good two-punch combination there from Watson.
18:08 Yeah, it was.
18:09 Here's the elusive right-handed Declan.
18:13 Yeah, he's just got to throw it a few more times.
18:17 The hook just missed there.
18:19 Very good-looking boxer to watch, Declan Kelly,
18:23 but a natural athlete, I think, but he's got very nice punches on him,
18:27 big torque here.
18:28 Good right hand from Declan.
18:30 He threw it and he had success.
18:32 That's what he needs to do more of.
18:34 Oh, right hand just missing again.
18:36 Two-punch combination from Declan.
18:39 He tried to vary it up there with a right uppercut,
18:44 and Nathan all but walked into that one.
18:47 It's a better period.
18:50 The last minute's been really good for him.
18:52 He's got a good grip on the body.
18:54 He's got a good grip on the body.
18:56 It's a better period.
18:57 The last minute's been really good for Kelly.
18:59 That's what he's got to do.
19:00 He's got to throw more right hands and just throw more punches in general.
19:04 It's been great watching these two over, I guess, the last 18 months, Nathan.
19:14 They just develop as young boxers.
19:17 Yeah, and they have.
19:18 They've had their ups and downs, obviously.
19:20 They've had a couple of losses and a couple of wins along the way.
19:24 Yeah, their progression has always been up.
19:26 Even in some of their losses, they're still going up.
19:30 Once again, some replays of round number five.
19:51 It's only three to go in this eight-round contest
19:55 for the Australasian middleweight title.
19:58 It was, I think, a better round for Kelly.
20:01 Especially for at least half the round,
20:03 he was throwing a lot more punches and having success when he was doing so.
20:08 A right hand just missing the mark once again there from Watson.
20:12 He's found it a few times tonight, especially that left hook.
20:17 That's been the punch so far.
20:19 The ace boxing group.
20:21 [crowd noise]
20:26 Ultratune, Pro-Ed Civil, Action Metal Recyclers,
20:30 Wandless Waste Management, Hannae Lawyers, Oxworks,
20:33 our major sponsors, and our other sponsors,
20:36 Bill Chase, Arabia Homes, Madison Sport, and Zoo Creative.
20:40 We thank you all as part of the ace boxing team.
20:45 It makes it all possible.
20:49 [crowd noise]
20:56 Nathan Watson in the white trunks.
21:00 A nine-win, two-loss record.
21:03 Declan Kelly in the green trunks.
21:05 A seven-win, four-loss record.
21:09 Very evenly matched.
21:11 Both boys having 11 fights each.
21:14 A couple more wins for Watson,
21:16 but the level has been higher of Kelly's opponents,
21:19 so very evenly matched.
21:21 [crowd noise]
21:27 Watson looking to sit down on the punches, looking to power up.
21:32 Two minutes remaining in the round.
21:35 See that bend in Nathan Watson's knees, especially the right knee.
21:41 He gets into position, he drops down, prepares to launch.
21:49 As he drops down in level two, a lot of the time,
21:52 Declan almost subconsciously drops down his level as well.
21:57 That's been his Achilles heel, his last couple of losses,
22:00 is he's been caught in the scrap.
22:02 Like I said at the start, he's got all the advantages,
22:05 but sometimes he doesn't use them,
22:07 or in particular fights anyway, he doesn't use them,
22:09 and that's when he's lost.
22:11 [crowd noise]
22:16 Doing a little bit better job here.
22:18 Declan, you can see, using his range.
22:23 Scooting on the outside of the ring.
22:26 Throwing a little bit more punches, but still not enough for me,
22:29 but getting better.
22:32 Often the taller fighter, Nathan, uses his range,
22:35 and to a degree, it frustrates the opponent
22:38 into doing something they don't want to do,
22:40 but Nathan has given no signal to me anyway,
22:44 at any stage tonight, that he's getting frustrated.
22:47 Not at all, and I think once again,
22:49 like the previous fight with Quinton Kerry,
22:52 I think Watson's comfortable with the power in front of him as well.
22:56 I think that serves a big thing as well.
22:59 I think if Kelly was a devastating puncher,
23:02 he probably wouldn't be sitting in that mid-range
23:05 as much as he has been tonight.
23:07 [crowd noise]
23:14 Kelly, back to the corner.
23:18 Watson, double up the leg.
23:21 And that was that left hook again.
23:23 [crowd noise]
23:25 Finding a clever fight, Nathan.
23:27 He is. He is like a polar opposite fighter from his last fight.
23:31 Obviously done a full 360 from that shock loss,
23:35 where he really never got going.
23:37 Honestly, he threw a handful of punches around
23:41 and just really didn't feel like he wanted to be there last start,
23:45 but this is completely different, completely opposite,
23:48 and it's paying reward so far.
23:51 [crowd noise]
23:54 You can see some replays of round number six.
23:58 It's a good round for Watson.
24:00 Once again, backing his opponent,
24:02 hitting him with that left hook.
24:04 Just missing that time round,
24:06 but it did hit a couple of times throughout that sixth round as well.
24:09 [crowd noise]
24:11 Up next is Kenny Aitken and Lachlan O'Shea
24:15 for the Queensland welterweight title.
24:18 Then it's Jasmine Parr and Brianna Harrison
24:21 for the WIBA flyweight world title.
24:25 And finally, Dan Hill and Dylan Biggs
24:28 for the Australian super welterweight title.
24:32 That's what's coming up, three title fights.
24:35 This is the first of four.
24:37 [crowd noise]
24:46 Watson trying to get on the inside,
24:48 trying to be busy,
24:49 but defense really good tonight from Nathan Watson.
24:55 And that left hook again.
24:57 [crowd noise]
25:00 And it continues to.
25:01 But the irony of it, Andy,
25:03 is it keeps on circling the other way.
25:05 So you'd think it wouldn't land,
25:06 but I think the reason why it has been landing
25:09 is every time Declan's back hits the ropes,
25:12 that's when he throws it.
25:14 [crowd noise]
25:40 Yeah, you just got to throw.
25:41 It's as simple as that.
25:42 You got to throw punches to win fights,
25:45 and he just hasn't been throwing enough.
25:47 [crowd noise]
25:50 Halfway through the rounds.
25:52 [crowd noise]
25:55 Nathan traveling across the ring really good.
25:58 Yeah, good jab.
25:59 A left hand jab there.
26:01 But didn't follow on from that.
26:04 Obviously didn't feel the timing was right
26:06 or the balance was right.
26:08 It certainly looked all right.
26:10 [crowd noise]
26:22 Going long again is Declan Kelly.
26:25 [crowd noise]
26:31 Went over Brian Heck last fight.
26:33 It was a unanimous decision.
26:34 Over five.
26:36 [crowd noise]
26:48 Played out as a bit of a chess match this one.
26:51 Yeah, this round has sort of been
26:53 a little less action than the previous rounds.
26:56 Sort of just following each other around,
26:58 not really throwing too many punches,
27:00 just sort of following each other like cat and mouse
27:03 this round.
27:04 [crowd noise]
27:12 Watson trying to push things.
27:14 [crowd noise]
27:17 Going to the final ten seconds of this round.
27:20 Really a round off for both boys.
27:22 Just sort of gliding around.
27:25 [crowd noise]
27:28 [bell rings]
27:29 [crowd noise]
27:31 Interesting.
27:32 [crowd noise]
27:35 Interesting round again.
27:38 Some really subtle changes by both boxers and both corners.
27:43 [crowd noise]
27:50 Round seven, strange one.
27:52 You can see some of the replays here.
27:54 It was not really effective shots from either boys.
28:00 There's a couple that landed,
28:01 but not really anything of significance from either boy.
28:06 But they're coming into the eighth and final round now,
28:08 so you'd think if they're going to open up,
28:10 it will be this round, which is the last round
28:13 for that Australasian middleweight title.
28:15 So the crown is going to go somewhere.
28:19 Who wants it more?
28:20 [crowd noise]
28:23 Let's make some noise.
28:24 This is it.
28:25 This is our eighth and final round.
28:28 [bell rings]
28:29 [crowd noise]
28:30 Blokes embrace at the end of the eighth,
28:33 or the start of the eighth and final round, should I say.
28:37 Nathan Watson, Declan Kelly.
28:40 I know sportsmanship,
28:41 I've got to say I'm not always a fan of the embrace
28:43 at the start of the round, but it is what it is,
28:46 and it is 2023, and life has changed.
28:53 You reckon you would have got Mike Tyson
28:55 to hug his opponent before the start of the round?
28:57 Not a chance.
28:58 Not a chance.
29:04 They are on.
29:06 It's not promoting that natural aggression to spill out
29:10 in the first couple of rounds.
29:11 It's almost relaxing, almost soothing,
29:14 a fast little cuddler.
29:18 Nonetheless, they've both done a good job tonight.
29:21 There's that search for the uppercut from Declan Kelly.
29:25 I think the words from Kwong Lee Fong in the corner
29:30 were "fire up, come on, fire up."
29:33 Yeah, definitely, just output, output.
29:38 You can see he's flagging his boy to go forward,
29:41 go forward, go forward.
29:42 I can see him in the corner there.
29:44 I think he's getting frustrated, Flan,
29:46 and rightly so, because his boy's got the tools.
29:50 I've seen in previous fights when he throws,
29:53 he does so well, but he's sort of been holding back
29:56 a little bit tonight.
30:00 Halfway through the final round.
30:03 They've certainly stepped it up.
30:04 The crowd is involved as well.
30:09 He is screaming, "Go, go, go."
30:14 You don't want to know the other words he's saying in between.
30:18 But Kwong Lee Fong is telling his soldier to go forward.
30:26 Oh, and a good right hand.
30:28 Good right hand, exactly right.
30:35 Yeah, Kwong Lee Fong, it's "Go forward, go forward, go."
30:39 That's what he's screaming, every second word anyway.
30:44 I think he's got Tourette's to me.
30:49 And he's had success this round.
30:51 Isn't it funny, Andy?
30:53 He's going forward and he's throwing punches,
30:55 and he's had success.
30:56 There's another right hand.
30:57 Yeah, good right hand, good two-punch combination.
30:59 Nathan accommodated it.
31:03 Really good round.
31:04 Stylistically, very different fighters, as we said.
31:08 Different makeup, and it's been a real chess match.
31:13 We've got 30 seconds remaining in the round.
31:15 Yeah, maybe on a case, probably a little too late for Declan Kelly
31:21 as he tries to get the crowd into this.
31:24 But I don't know.
31:25 I wish he would have thrown his hands a little bit earlier.
31:27 Nathan Watson, really good performance.
31:32 Good fight between two good boys, Declan Kelly.
31:37 Nathan Watson doing their thing over 24 minutes.
31:52 The eighth and final round, it was -- yeah.
31:56 Another -- I wouldn't say frustrating,
32:00 but yeah, I could say that too.
32:02 But it's just -- I just wanted to shake Kelly at times.
32:06 He's got all the tools.
32:07 I've seen it.
32:08 Like I said, each coach has seen it hundreds and thousands of times,
32:12 and that's why he was so frustrated in the quarter,
32:14 screaming for his boy to go forward and throw punches,
32:18 because I think this would have been a hell of a lot closer if he did that.
32:21 But Nathan Watson stuck to the game plan tonight,
32:24 and I think he's going to pay dividends.
32:27 Well, you scream and you get frustrated when you know you're dealing with
32:31 someone that's got more than what they're showing.
32:35 And both of these young blokes,
32:37 I don't know if anyone's going to be a unified world champion here,
32:41 but super talented, super talented athletes, so tough, so game.
32:48 They've got that little bit of crazy in them as well,
32:50 that every boxer needs -- they've got so much to offer.
32:54 And at times tonight, both showed it.
32:58 So good on you.
32:59 You represented yourselves and your family, your team,
33:02 and all your sponsors extremely well.
33:05 It was a fight that was fought in the right spirit as well.
33:16 Just waiting for the numbers to come on in.
33:20 There's the belt, the Australasian championship.
33:27 The crew from Zoo Creative, Ryan and the team.
33:32 Here to present the hardware, let's go to James.
33:38 All right, ladies and gentlemen, let's get set to make this one official.
33:41 We'll get our two fighters to center ring.
33:43 Now, also welcome everything Ryan Hunter from Zoo Creative.
33:45 Give him a big round of applause.
33:46 He's going to help with the belt presentation here.
33:48 Keep the applause going for the two fighters as well.
33:51 And worthy of the Australasian title.
33:53 We go to the judges' scorecards.
33:57 Judge Rodney Marsh scores the belt 78-74.
34:00 Judge Phil Gregory scores the contest 78-74.
34:03 And Judge Paul Williams judges the contest 78-74.
34:07 All for your winner and the new Australasian champion.
34:10 And it goes to the blue corner, Nathan Watson.
34:21 You know what, you don't usually say this, but I reckon that's perfect scoring by the judges.
34:25 Yeah.
34:27 And as soon as they read out 78-74 first time round, I thought, yeah, I can live with that.
34:33 Well done, Nathan Watson.
34:35 Well done, Declan Kelly.
34:36 Well done to both guys.
34:38 Fight number four out of the way.
34:41 We've got three left, all for titles.
34:43 Up next is Kenny Aitken, Lachlan Osei.
