00:00 What is the film about?
00:04 It's a film about a mother and son and it's about their, it's a dysfunctional family and it is about the repair that this couple make to their lives through music.
00:18 And it's lots of songs and it's funny and it's got a great cast.
00:22 I got blessed with this one I have to say. Everything aligned on this movie. It was, Eve is a revelation.
00:30 Joe brought so much to this role that could have been a small role. You know, he plays a guy in LA who's a singer-songwriter.
00:38 This kid, Oren Kinlan, I don't know if you've met him yet, is a beautiful young actor, real still, you know, a killer.
00:45 And of course Jack Rayner, my old friend, my wife's in the movie, my kids play little roles in the movie.
00:50 Everybody wanted to be there. It didn't feel like we were making a movie, it felt like we were in a band together.
00:57 It was an unusual musical for me because it wasn't just about writing the best song, which is normally what you're trying to do in a musical, like give me the best song you got.
01:05 This was different, it was a bit more bespoke to the characters.
01:09 As you know in the movie, she's learning the guitar so she's not going to be James Taylor up and down the fretboard.
01:15 He's a failed singer-songwriter so again, he's not going to be knocking out the Ed Sheeran hits.
01:20 And the kid is working in a garage band on his laptop and listening to drill music and hip-hop and soaking it all up so he's not going to be a whiz kid yet.
01:29 What does that sound like?
01:31 So it was really fun for us to try and figure out the parameters of this thing, how it was going to sound, and that it sounded plausible and believable for an audience.
01:39 I don't know if I could do just a drama now.
01:42 I've gotten so used to pausing the drama and taking a break and having my characters pick up guitars or pianos or bass guitars and sing.
01:52 And just pausing things and percolating and letting it sit for a while.
01:56 So it's very different.
01:58 In many ways it's a great thing to be able to fall back on occasionally when you need a rest in the movie.
02:04 And I like to just put that right up front rather than have it as score in the background.
02:07 Why not just put it in the drama of the character?
02:12 So that's kind of what I've been doing for the last few years and it's kind of working for me now in a nice way.
