Arkansas Razorbacks defensive players Chris Paul and Landon Jackson on what happened in collapse in second half to Cougars on Saturday night.
Transcript
00:00 You guys had double digit leads twice.
00:02 I know BYU had a couple of short fields there on the fourth down.
00:05 When they get, when y'all did get the fourth down and after the pick.
00:09 But just, what do you think BYU was doing to put up all those points?
00:13 >> Man, they're executing on every, every time we made a mistake,
00:17 they came back and executed.
00:19 We gotta be able to put teams out when we get up and that's not what we did today.
00:23 We gotta play a better game all three phases of the game,
00:26 offensively, defensively and special teams.
00:28 And that was definitely not our best day of all and
00:32 that's not what we like to showcase for our program.
00:35 >> Yeah, mainly just what Landon said,
00:38 I just gotta play our brand of football all four quarters.
00:41 It's like every time we made a mistake, they capitalized.
00:45 We can't let that happen defensively.
00:46 We can't let the mistakes happen offensively.
00:49 Play hard, but we just gotta play smarter like Kofi said.
00:53 >> You guys got four games, none of them are here.
00:56 It's a really good team.
00:57 The start of the loss was this,
00:58 now I think you guys bounce back from this with what you got coming up.
01:01 >> We just learned from this experience right here.
01:04 We just move on, we take the loss and move on.
01:07 We know that we didn't play our brand like I said earlier, but
01:09 we on the LSU and that's our top priority now.
01:11 So we're getting ready for that game.
01:13 It's gonna be Saturday.
01:14 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:16 >> Look at the stats, 281 yards of offense, but 38 points to show for it.
01:22 What do you make of that?
01:25 >> Did go back to what we said, just didn't capitalize on our mistakes.
01:29 We gave them short yard opportunities.
01:31 And like I said, they capitalized on things like that.
01:33 We just can't let that happen.
01:36 >> Yeah, I mean, they got momentum and we gotta kill the momentum.
01:40 We didn't do that today.
01:42 We allowed them to get momentum and drive it down our throat and
01:45 that's not our brand of football at all.
01:48 And I mean, they capitalized when they were supposed to and we didn't.
01:51 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:54 >> For either of you, I think they were only four of 13 on third down,
01:57 which isn't terrible for you all.
01:58 But the two of them were on their game winning touchdown drive.
02:02 They come for a third and 10th.
02:03 Just how frustrating is that that you couldn't get off the field on that drive?
02:06 >> Yeah, I put that on the D-line, we gotta get the quarterback.
02:09 We ran one call where I thought we were gonna get to him, but we didn't.
02:14 And another one of the plays is on me.
02:16 I was a spy player and I let him get a little bit too much.
02:19 So, I mean, our D-line is capitalizing this third down situations.
02:22 >> A couple of weeks in a row that you're all been put in tough spots because of
02:28 fourth down decisions, just how difficult is it as a unit to continue to rally together?
02:32 >> Man, like I said previously, when they get momentum, we gotta kill it.
02:37 That's what our defensive coaches stress to us.
02:40 There's gonna be ups and downs in the game.
02:42 And whenever they're up, we gotta bring them right back down.
02:44 We can't let them keep blowing up their positivities,
02:48 cuz that's how a team gets momentum.
02:51 I mean, at this level of football, it's a game of momentum.
02:54 So we gotta kill it before, I mean, we were up by ten.
02:58 We gotta score more, we gotta stop them when they get the ball back.
03:02 And I mean, it's gotta capitalize on their mistakes.
03:07 >> Chris, did you get held at all today?
03:13 >> I mean, I did, but it was my job to get off those blocks.
03:17 I take full accountability for those.
03:19 My job to get there and make those plays as one of the leaders on the defense and
03:23 things like that.
03:25 And it's just playing fast, continuing to play fast.
03:28 We don't have adversity in game, that's just football.
03:30 No matter how good you are, you don't have adversity.
03:33 That's how you respond to that adversity, the outcome that you want, so.
03:39 >> What did they do offensively that gave you guys so many problems?
03:43 >> Really, if I'm being honest, when they got the ball,
03:48 they just kind of seemed like they wanted to do it a little bit more.
03:53 We can't allow that.
03:54 If I'm just being honest, they wanted to make up for a lot.
03:58 But like I said, it was on Sunday, we know we did, we know we need to work on.
04:02 When it comes Monday, we're back on.
04:04 [BLANK_AUDIO]
04:09 >> How's the team morale?
04:10 What's the post game locker room like and what's the attitude?
04:15 I guess going to- >> I think we've been pretty positive in
04:19 there.
04:20 You got guys like me, Pooh, KJ, everybody walking around like, hey, we're good.
04:24 We can't let this affect the rest of our season.
04:25 We gotta bounce back and one game doesn't define the SEC.
04:31 So we go into Death Valley next week to play a really solid LSU team and
04:38 we gotta have a great week to practice and bounce back.
04:42 >> Like he said, we just can't let one loss define us.
04:44 We got nine more games and this four game stretch is gonna be tough.
04:48 We cannot let a loss to a great team like this affect the rest of the season.
04:52 We can't just carry that over to LSU and then carry it over to the next opponent.
04:55 We gotta push it next play, go out there and
04:59 you play your best running football and make you.
05:03 >> That's a quick 14th lead, they came back and we took the lead and
05:06 then a lot of momentum swings and we're up by ten.
05:09 Were you guys feeling pretty good or
05:10 you just feel like, well, hey, we gotta knock these guys out?
05:14 >> Yeah, that's on the defense.
05:15 Early in the game, we get up 14 nothing,
05:17 we can't allow them to get back in the game like that.
05:21 So I mean, we just gotta shut it down early.
05:23 We were playing too, I guess we weren't really attacking them as much as we
05:27 should have.
05:27 We were kind of sitting back and waiting for
05:29 something to happen instead of going to make plays.
05:31 And I mean, I put that on defense.
05:33 And that all goes back to what I said earlier.
05:37 One thing that I like about T-Way, he always say, E plus R,
05:40 you can put it on defense.
05:42 It's always gonna be in the game, go to bat.
05:44 No matter what, no matter what's going on, your response,
05:48 it's how you're gonna get through whatever you're going through at the time.
05:51 And like I said, it's gonna give the outcome, I don't feel like we didn't have
05:54 a good response to some of the things that they brought out.
05:57 But that's just a learning experience for the next upcoming game.
06:01 >> Ali, I know it's hard to turn a page tonight, but
06:04 you're gonna be going back to LSU.
06:05 Do you have any initial thoughts on that?
06:07 >> Man, go into it like it's any other game.
06:11 I can't make it bigger than what it is.
06:14 I mean, they're an SEC opponent, we gotta go in there,
06:16 shut them down defensively, and then put points up on the board.
