00:00 The sculpture of Juan Luna's face is not only not being exhibited in the country.
00:05 The National Museum's request is in line with that
00:08 because in the work that was exhibited, it is possible that it is part of their collection that was lost during World War II.
00:16 Sandra Aguinaldo is the one who pointed it out.
00:21 This work of Juan Luna, the Imen or Imini, was talked about by the public after more than a century of searching.
00:31 Now, another artwork that is connected to him is gaining interest.
00:36 A bronze bust or sculpture of Juan Luna made by his close friend and fellow artist, Mariano Benlliure.
00:46 Benlliure is a well-known Spanish artist because aside from his winning awards between 1862 and 1947,
00:55 he also made many busts and public monuments in Spain.
01:00 He was awarded an auction or auctioned the work in the Philippines,
01:04 which is estimated to be worth P550,000 to P600,000.
01:10 But the National Museum wrote to the Salcedo Auctions to ask not to include it in the auction
01:16 because it is possible that it is owned by the government.
01:19 It was considered not to be included in the collections of the National Library and National Museum of World War II.
01:26 It was the reason why the Americans were so eager to get it from the Japanese in the Battle for Manila of 1945.
01:35 According to the information obtained by the Salcedo Auctions, a metal scavenger or a thief was the first to discover it
01:42 and sold the work for P5,000.
01:45 This bust is now confirmed to be an original by the Mariano Benlliure Foundation in Spain.
01:52 Salcedo Auctions wishes to say that we are proud and honored to have played a crucial role
02:03 in bringing out to the art community the existence of a Philippine treasure
02:09 and an important part of our national patrimony.
02:14 According to the Salcedo Auctions, the owner of the bust, who is an investment institution, agreed to the request.
02:21 But they clarified,
02:23 "Since the owner's acquisition of the piece, there have been no claims of ownership by the National Museum or any other private or public institution
02:36 despite the fact that it had been featured on the cover of Chronicle magazine in 1967
02:44 and was even catalogued by the Filipinos Heritage Library."
02:49 We asked the National Museum to release the piece but they still have no answer.
