00:00 Welcome back to New Rockstars, I'm Eric Boston.
00:01 This is a breakdown of the trailer for Zack Snyder's
00:04 Rebel Moon, part one, A Child of Fire.
00:06 This is gonna be a multi-part space epic.
00:08 First part coming to Netflix December 22nd.
00:10 Zack Snyder has said Rebel Moon is influenced
00:12 by Seven Samurai, Star Wars,
00:14 and 1981's adult animated sci-fi film, Heavy Metal.
00:17 So there is a lot going on here.
00:19 Let's break down this trailer for all the details
00:21 you might have missed and why you should be
00:22 really pumped for this movie.
00:23 Let's get started.
00:24 (dramatic music)
00:29 (dramatic music)
00:32 Okay, the trailer opens on the Netflix logo, of course,
00:39 which changes from this burnished bronze color,
00:42 like the color of a warrior's helmet, to its usual red.
00:45 A hand brushes over wheat in a field
00:47 in a move reminiscent of Gladiator,
00:48 but this hand belongs to Jimmy, a robot,
00:50 also known as JC-1435, voiced by Anthony Hopkins
00:53 and played physically by Dustin Scythehammer.
00:55 Jimmy was created centuries ago to defend
00:57 the king of the Galactic Empire,
00:59 but has since been repurposed by the evil Imperium
01:01 and brought to the peaceful farming satellite moon of Veldt.
01:04 This movie centers around the fact that the Imperium,
01:06 which is the army of the corrupt government,
01:08 the Mother World, shows up on Veldt,
01:10 demanding harvest from the locals,
01:12 and the locals hire a ragtag group of warriors to fight back,
01:15 hence the Seven Samurai inspiration.
01:17 And yes, if this sounds like Pixar's A Bug's Life,
01:19 Pixar's A Bug's Life is also Seven Samurai.
01:21 We cut to a shot of Jimmy looking very hella
01:23 for Marvel-like in this helmet with horns on it.
01:25 Okay, onto the next clip.
01:27 - Do you know the story of the Princess Ysa?
01:29 (angelic singing)
01:32 In myth, she was called the Redeemer.
01:35 - Okay, we see a young Korra here,
01:36 played by Elizabeth Martinez,
01:38 followed by a bunch of ships surrounding a planet.
01:40 If you think this is the Rebel Moon, it's not.
01:42 We're not even going to see the titular Rebel Moon
01:44 in this movie, but more on that after the next section.
01:47 - It was said this child would stop the madness of war,
01:50 that she was to usher in a new age of peace and compassion.
01:55 I was given memories of a world I will never see.
01:59 - Okay, General Titus, played by Jaimon Honsu,
02:01 is on his knees looking out at the aftermath of a battle.
02:04 Fun fact, Anthony Hopkins actually played Titus Andronicus
02:06 in 1999's Titus, obviously based on the Shakespeare play,
02:09 which dealt with Andronicus's violent deeds
02:12 and downfall after coming home from battle.
02:13 We cut to a group of men kneeling with hoods
02:15 over their heads that have an eye
02:16 with a teardrop design on them.
02:18 Looks like there's some interesting mythological iconography
02:21 that will be explored in this new story verse.
02:24 The Imperium are showing their power
02:25 as a ship blows up a huge statue,
02:27 shattering the peace that Jimmy was just talking about.
02:29 Okay, next clip.
02:30 (dramatic music)
02:32 - Loyalty to a king I cannot serve.
02:34 And love for a child I could not save.
02:41 - Okay, two people dressed in all black stand at a funeral
02:45 with a big white griffin behind them.
02:47 A dead king dressed in all white
02:48 and clutching a scepter is carried by pallbearers,
02:51 and we cut to Nemesis, played by Bae Doona,
02:54 holding a dead child by a burning village.
02:56 We get some sort of spaceport
02:58 with these people standing there,
02:58 including this row of individuals on the lower left
03:01 who hold these lights.
03:02 This could be the scribes,
03:03 a group of masked priests from the mother world
03:06 who can implant memories into people
03:08 and rewrite history that way.
03:09 All right, next clip.
03:10 (dramatic music)
03:12 - What do you think they want?
03:14 - Everything.
03:15 - I've found a scar giver.
03:20 - Are you a child of war?
03:21 - All right, we see adult Korra, played by Sofia Boutella,
03:24 frantically hitting the bell with a hammer.
03:26 Now, if you watch "Star Wars Andor,"
03:27 this is something they did to get messages
03:28 or warnings out to the townsfolk,
03:30 so Korra is likely warning the people of Veldt
03:32 that mother world ships are coming.
03:33 We get this exchange.
03:35 - What do you think they want?
03:37 - Everything.
03:38 - And I'm sorry to be so grounded in the MCU,
03:39 but this does remind me of Thanos
03:41 when he's in the Soul Realm talking to young Gamora,
03:43 and she asks, "What'd it cost you?"
03:44 And he goes, "Everything."
03:45 Okay, we see Admiral Atticus Noble,
03:47 leader of the Imperium Army.
03:49 He's played by Ed Screen,
03:50 who was the original Dario Naharis in "Game of Thrones."
03:53 He was actually replaced in that role by Mikhail Hausman,
03:56 who also shows up in "Rebel Moon"
03:57 playing the character Gunnar.
03:58 Noble says that he found her, the scar giver.
04:01 And we get these awesome scenes of Korra kicking ass
04:03 in what looks like a pub.
04:04 We also see young Korra again
04:06 in the middle of a burning city ravaged by war
04:07 as a mother world tank fires a missile.
04:10 Okay, next clip.
04:11 (dramatic music)
04:12 - I always thought that love is weakness.

04:23 - We see more of Korra's past serving in the Imperium.
04:25 She kisses a fellow soldier
04:27 who later dies in the snowy battle.
04:28 It's clear that she was a top soldier
04:30 as she stands on a battle-beaten building,
04:32 planting a flag that's blowing in the wind.
04:33 And I don't know if it's just the color scheme
04:35 or the dramatic imagery,
04:36 but I'm getting some "Starship Troopers" vibes here.
04:38 And by "Starship Troopers," I mean fascist.
04:40 Then we meet the Harmada, an alien spider warrior
04:44 played by Snyder Mainstay, Jenna Malone.
04:46 The character is very reminiscent of the Stalk
04:48 from the "Saga" comic series.
04:50 She looks like she's holding a child
04:51 as she talks to Nemesis,
04:53 who then busts out these two red,
04:54 well, what can only be described as laser swords.
04:57 Let's call them laser swords.
04:58 And we should point out here
04:59 that Zack Snyder originally intended "Rebel Moon"
05:01 to be a "Star Wars" movie.
05:03 He pitched this project during the Disney acquisition
05:05 of Lucasfilm in 2012, but the project was scrapped.
05:08 This is all while Snyder was in post-production
05:10 for "Man of Steel."
05:10 Snyder never intended to use any of the known characters
05:13 from the "Star Wars" franchise.
05:14 He wanted to tell a story set in the "Star Wars" universe,
05:16 off to the side of the main plot lines we all know,
05:18 but with more of an adult tone to it.
05:20 That explains why this film
05:21 has a lot of "Star Wars" pastiche throughout it.
05:24 And this not-quite-lightsaber-but-laser-sword
05:26 is one of them.

06:31 Kai is part of the resistance team
06:32 as played by Sons of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam.
06:35 Next, we get a character in a cape

10:17 They film part two immediately after filming part one.

10:21 an extended R-rated release at some point.
10:23 And yeah, this movie does look like something
10:25 we need to see on a big screen.
10:26 Now back in April, Debbie Snyder,
10:28 the producer and Zack Snyder's wife,
10:29 confirmed that a part three is on the way too.
10:31 And in part three, we will finally see
10:33 the actual Rebel Moon.
10:34 Zack Snyder told Empire there's a planet named Vahna,
10:37 and Vahna is the Rebel Moon.
10:38 It's not even in one shot of this movie.
10:40 And if you want even more of the Rebel Moon
10:42 cinematic universe, Snyder has teased
10:43 that a TV show could be in the works
10:45 that dives into Balisarius's backstory,
10:47 as well as a video game.
10:48 He told the Nerd Girls podcast that he was in talks
10:51 to develop an RPG for this IP.
10:53 Snyder even has a 450-page Rebel Moon Bible
