00:00 I'm Maria Turner, this is Morgan Alexander, and let's talk some Big 12 football.
00:08 Morgan, who do you think is going to win the Big 12 championship?
00:11 Well, I think that's a really interesting question because it's not what I think, but
00:14 it's what everyone else thinks.
00:16 Everyone has Texas as a number one favorite.
00:18 Every year, it's Texas.
00:19 Now, my question is, why?
00:22 You know, every year we have the same team over and over again.
00:25 They're getting ready to leave the Big 12.
00:27 Arguably, a lot of people think they think they're going to leave because they think
00:29 they're too good for it.
00:31 My question is, you know, for you, is why are they leaving the Big 12?
00:35 Do you think that they're good enough to win the Big 12 this year, and what is going on
00:39 behind the scenes right now with this team?
00:41 Well, them wanting to leave the Big 12, I understand it.
00:44 You know, they're Texas.
00:45 They have a name behind them.
00:46 They want to step up to the plate and be a part of the SEC.
00:50 Arguably so.
00:51 You're going to go against teams like Alabama, Tennessee, places that have made a name for
00:55 themselves.
00:56 I do think that they have a huge shot at winning the Big 12 championship this year.
01:00 A huge shot.
01:02 But arguably, I think we have to consider Texas Tech.
01:06 Last season, they won 8-5, and they have a pretty solid team.
01:10 18 starters that are returning.
01:12 Six new players from the transfer portal that are back as well.
01:17 So you know?
01:18 And it's really interesting you say that, but I want to go back to why they're leaving
01:20 the Big 12.
01:21 I think it's funny to me because last year, they lost to Texas Tech.
01:24 They lost to Oklahoma State.
01:26 They lost to TCU.
01:27 And yes, they lost to Bama, which we all are like, "OK, we can use that."
01:29 I personally think, right alongside of what the commissioner of the Big 12 had said, he
01:34 said, "You know, I think they're leaving because, not because of money, they have all sorts
01:38 of kinds of money.
01:39 I think it's because they would rather lose to teams like Alabama and Georgia than lose
01:44 to teams like Kansas State or Texas Tech."
01:47 It's a pride issue, and I think that since every year they're not winning consistently,
01:51 now, you know, you go to the SEC, it makes more sense.
01:53 No one's raising eyebrows at you losing to Bama, but you lose to Oklahoma State, and
01:57 everyone's like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:58 Texas isn't that good."
01:59 So I think that is the issue right now.
02:01 I really think it's a pride thing on why they're leaving.
02:05 You know what?
02:06 I think that could be.
02:07 That's very, very true.
02:08 And yeah, I mean, I guess you're right.
02:12 Losing to teams that may not have the bigger name kind of hurts the pride just a little
02:16 bit more.
02:17 So you're right.
02:18 Could be a pride thing.
02:19 And they get the best recruits.
02:20 Yeah, Archie Manning and Quinn Ures.
02:21 And everyone's like, "Quinn Ures is a starter."
02:22 Yes, he is.
02:23 And the question is, is Archie Manning going to stay if he's not going to play?
02:26 I mean, he is a highly touted recruit.
02:29 Maybe he's getting a lot of money to be there, but me personally, I'm thinking, you have
02:32 two really good quarterbacks in that locker room.
02:36 But to me, it seems like it's a no-brainer they're playing Quinn Ures.
02:39 There was no real topic of conversation surrounding Archie Manning at all.
02:42 I mean, Quinn Ures, they're talking about he's an NFL draft pick, and he's this, and
02:45 he's that.
02:46 Last season, I mean, yes, he was injured, but I didn't quite see the Quinn Ures that
02:50 everybody else is seeing.
02:51 Maybe he'll prove me wrong.
02:52 Maybe he will.
02:53 But I think we need to dive into TCU a little bit, because everyone, just every year, they
02:58 want to kind of toss them to the side.
03:00 But as of last year, they showed that they're recruiting good, solid players that are there
03:04 to play, not there for the money.
03:06 Well, and TCU only having, you know, the two losses to Kansas State, which I think that
03:12 shocked us all.
03:13 That was pretty out of the book, but you know, as Kansas State proved, they're nothing to
03:17 play around with.
03:18 Coach actually said something about that in press conference.
03:22 They're a program that's not to be played around with, and that they are always ready
03:25 to play.
03:26 And then TCU losing to Georgia in the national championship, you know, painful win right
03:31 there, or painful loss, I should say.
03:34 Great win for Georgia.
03:36 Probably not one of the easiest championships that they have come across, but it is what
03:40 it is.
03:41 And I think Kansas State is one of those teams, right?
03:42 Like, they, I think it was a tough loss for TCU, but I think it was the best thing for
03:46 them.
03:47 To beat Michigan going into the college football playoffs, you have to have a loss on your
03:50 belt.
03:51 And you have to have a loss once.
03:52 You're not going to be a team that many times, right?
03:53 So I think it kind of lit a fire for them, and that was great.
03:56 I think also with them, the big topic of conversation around TCU is the hiring of a new offensive
04:01 coordinator.
04:02 They lost a really huge hole, and they kind of took in Kendall Bryles from Baylor, which
04:07 is very controversial.
04:08 If we can remember, his father was fired at Baylor after some sexual assault misconduct
04:14 type of deal, and everyone's kind of raising their eyebrows, like, "Why would you hire
04:18 him?"
04:19 And as he stated here today, he was like, "I have known people that know him."
04:23 He was not involved.
04:24 His father's actions are not his actions.
04:26 And you know, the hole that they're missing this year is not their defense, it's their
04:29 offense.
04:30 They're losing Max Duggan, Quinton Johnson.
04:31 So now they're trying to see, "How can we reboot this offense?"
04:34 Well, a new offensive coordinator that can bring in a new scheme, that's what you're
04:37 looking for.
04:38 And the defense is veteran, they're going to be set there.
04:40 So I think, you know, him backing the addition of Kendall Bryles is great for them, because
04:45 maybe this is a new outlook and a new way to change that offense.
04:49 And I think, ultimately, you know, Sonny Dix is one of those people, he's a people pleaser,
04:53 right?
04:54 And if he's willing to do this and bring someone into this program that's not that great upon,
04:59 that really shows he firmly believes this guy can come in and make a difference for
05:02 this offense.
05:03 I agree.
