00:00 Welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Pete Quinnell.
00:08 Since CM Punk's firing from AEW a few days ago, chatter in the wrestling world has been
00:12 focused mainly in his direction.
00:15 Speculation on what he might say, where he might go and what he might do next, including
00:18 of course, a potential return to WWE.
00:21 There's a lot of factors that would need to be worked out before that can happen of
00:25 course, but this wouldn't be the first time a WWE return could be on the cards for Pepsi
00:30 Phil.
00:31 After Brawl Out last year, while Punk was at home recovering from an injury and things
00:34 were still a little dicey between him and TK, Punk reportedly wanted to return to WWE.
00:40 This comes from Fightful Select who mentioned that around December 2022, according to those
00:44 close to Punk, he was open to the idea of leaving AEW, heading back to WWE and specifically
00:50 coming back in the Royal Rumble match of this year.
00:54 One of the rumoured ideas for Punk, and take note of that, rumoured?
00:58 None of this is confirmed with Punk or anyone close to him.
01:01 Regardless, one of the rumoured ideas that WWE talent had heard about was that Punk would
01:05 return in the Rumble match and face the person who eventually eliminated him at WrestleMania.
01:11 That person being...
01:12 Kevin Owens.
01:14 Considering that Owens faced Roman Reigns on that show and went on to main event night
01:18 one of WrestleMania 39 anyway, I think he did alright.
01:20 It's worth noting though that Fightful Select also says that they've not heard of any
01:24 traction to WWE being interested in this return, or if AEW were considering letting him go
01:29 either.
01:30 But now of course, they have.
01:31 And while public opinion has fallen down on multiple sides, various people continue to
01:36 have their own take on the situation.
01:38 For example, AEW's own Mark Henry, who mentioned on Busted Open Radio that...
01:44 The problem is solved now that Punk is gone.
01:47 This came as a response to Henry being asked if he thinks AEW will be better off without
01:51 Punk, to which he first said...
01:54 Yes.
01:57 On Raw last night, which Luke will have a review of here shortly, Gunther defended his
02:00 Intercontinental Championship once again against Chad Gable, and it was...
02:05 Good.
02:06 Shocking news.
02:07 Many people, me included, expected the match to be in a featured spot on the Payback Premium
02:11 Live event, but instead it was on Raw.
02:13 Now the reason for this has been revealed.
02:15 According to Fightful Select, the primary reasons why the Intercontinental match wasn't
02:19 on Payback was to keep the running time for Payback in check.
02:22 WWE have had an increased focus on making sure their big shows don't overstay their
02:26 welcome, and to get Gunther closer to breaking the record.
02:29 He's now sitting on a 452 day reign, with Honky Tonk Man's record being at 454.
02:33 So instead of him retaining at Payback and there being question marks over whether something
02:37 could happen on Raw to have him lose it, they decided to have the decisive win on Raw to
02:41 remove all doubt.
02:43 Which I guess makes sense.
02:44 I just wanted the match without ad breaks.
02:47 Selfish old me.
02:48 Now over to Luke.
02:50 Thank you very much, but now it's time to hear about another potential match of the
02:52 year candidate from British man Mark Markerson.
02:59 It's been an incredible few weeks for wrestling, hasn't it?
03:03 Oh my gosh Luke, what an exciting few weeks it's been all over the wrestling world.
03:07 Hasn't it just?
03:08 I had such a good time.
03:09 Of course you have.
03:10 Oh, the American Carpetbaggers finally came over and did a big show at Wembley.
03:13 If you were paying attention, you'd have seen the real outstanding contest of the weekend
03:17 was between Luke Jacobs and Tomohiro Ishii at the Copperbox Arena for RevPro's 11th
03:22 anniversary.
03:23 I'm so glad that's here because that was amazing, wasn't it?
03:26 Like it was so, so good.
03:28 It was an incredible match.
03:29 I loved it.
03:30 You were there.
03:31 I didn't see you.
03:32 Yeah, no, of course I was there.
03:33 Like it was, the crowd was electric.
03:34 We were sat in the upper bowl.
03:37 The upper bowl.
03:38 So you weren't really there.
03:40 Real fans buy floor seats.
03:42 The match was a masterclass in strong style.
03:44 Just two behemoths built in the traditional British and Japanese styles, absolutely beating
03:49 the tar out of each other.
03:50 Strikes, chops, suplexes, forearms, headbutts, and neither man was willing to back down.
03:55 They just wanted to get the win and they were going to do anything that they could to make
03:59 it happen, throwing everything they had at each other.
04:01 And I want to single out Luke Jacobs for praise here because since Ishii has shown up a few
04:05 times for that company, people claim to know his stuff.
04:10 But Jacobs deserves equal credit for selling this match to a crowd who were ready and willing
04:15 to eat it up.
04:16 Multiple times we rose in our feet in appreciation for the brutal spectacle.
04:20 I'm sure you saw us.
04:21 But in the end, it was an Ishii brainbuster that made the difference and finally put away
04:25 the Manchester lad for the one, two, three.
04:28 Luke, what can I say?
04:29 I love British wrestling and this whole show was such a celebration of it.
04:33 And with my reverence for the icons of both Britain and Japan, how could I possibly give
04:38 this match anything other than 15 stars?
04:41 15!
04:42 15.
04:43 All right, I'm curious.
04:47 Curious Mark.
04:48 You know.
04:49 Do the maths.
04:50 I insist, do the maths on that one.
04:53 Well, I mean, the work got four stars, the match itself, and then, you know, RevPro's
04:58 going strong.
04:59 11 years, I think each year of that deserves a star.
05:03 15 stars.
05:05 Right?
05:06 You know, I hate that, but it does make sense.
05:10 There you go.
05:11 That's what I'm saying.
05:12 I've been saying.
05:13 Thank you, Mark.
05:14 Maybe it does make sense.
05:16 But that's enough from Mark because it's now time for my review of Monday Night Raw,
05:20 aka the "See, this is funny because you can't see me."
05:24 You get it?
05:25 You can't see me edition of Monday Night Raw in about five minutes.
05:29 Don't worry though, guys.
05:31 I actually am still here.
05:32 The show opened with a big video recap of Payback highlighting The Judgment Day winning
05:36 all sorts of titles, and main event Jey Uso being drafted to Monday Night Raw.
05:41 And Jey opened the live show itself by announcing that Cody Rhodes is the man that brought him
05:45 back to WWE after being away for, check notes, just three weeks.
05:50 Although given how much happened between All In and All Out, maybe three weeks does feel
05:54 like a lifetime at this point.
05:55 He was interrupted by Sami Zayn who wanted to let him know that because of the Bloodline's
05:59 actions Jey Uso is not a popular guy backstage and there are a lot of dudes who won't be
06:05 happy to see him there.
06:07 It's okay, Jey, Punk will be here soon and that should take some of the heat off of you.
06:10 Sami isn't sad to see him here though and he offered his hand for a shake, but Jey didn't
06:15 shake it.
06:16 And when Sami went to leave, Jey revealed that wasn't very Usi and he did want to
06:20 shake his hand.
06:22 Sami hugged him instead and this was all lovely.
06:24 I've really gone off the boil with the Bloodline story in recent weeks, but hopefully Jey being
06:29 far away from Jimmy, Roman and Solo should help keep some interest in seeing them face
06:33 each other down the line.
06:35 WWE want to hold off on Jey vs. Jimmy until WrestleMania, so moving Jey to Raw and keeping
06:41 Jimmy on Smackers should aid that delay.
06:45 And to show just how upset some people are with Jey being on Raw, he passed an angry
06:49 Drew McIntyre and an angry Matt Riddle making their entrances for their tag match against
06:53 the Viking Raiders - with Sami playing peacekeeping.
06:55 It was a great bit of visual storytelling and staging.
06:59 The Viking Raiders beat the Glasbros at a name I hate as neither man is from Glasgow
07:04 - Airheads is right there - when Kofi Kingston ran down to help Riddle but accidentally hit
07:08 him with the Trouble in Paradise.
07:10 Raiders beat them all up and put Riddle through a table to score the win.
07:13 A fun and chaotic tag match with a creative finish to further the feud between the Airheads
07:18 - I'll use that name even if they won't - and the New Day.
07:21 Later in the show Drew argued with Kofi about "accident" and said that if Jey steps
07:24 out of line, he's going to go after Cody Rhodes, the man who brought Jey to this show.
07:29 So let's talk about that then, because also later in the show Adam Pearce revealed that
07:35 Jey being drafted to Raw comes with a price, and that price is someone from Raw being sent
07:40 to Smackdown.
07:41 Not only that, but the person who's going to get drafted is going to upset the Raw locker
07:46 room.
07:47 I know Drew's just set himself up for a feud with Cody Rhodes, but Rhodes going to
07:51 Smackdown is the choice that makes the most sense.
07:54 It would, in kayfabe, upset a lot of people in the Raw locker room.
07:57 It is an equal trade of main event talent, and it would put Cody back on the same show
08:02 as Roman so he can finish a certain story that he would like to finish.
08:06 Or you know, it'll just be a Kira Tozawa or some s***.
08:09 Who do you think it will be?
08:10 Let me know in the comments down below.
08:12 Let's at least hope it makes sense.
08:14 Speaking of not making sense, Seth Rollins called out Shinsuke Nakamura for a title match
08:20 right here, right now.
08:22 With Adam Pearce telling Rollins that he can't have a match because of his sad back.
08:26 And Nakamura, who wants a rematch for the World Heavyweight Championship and can see
08:29 that Seth Rollins is in a very vulnerable state, said no.
08:33 Okay then, fair enough, and instead got himself DQ'd against Ricochet and Brawled with Seth
08:38 afterwards.
08:39 I don't know either.
08:41 Judgment Day bragged about their titles, and J.D. McDonough, trying to appeal to Damien
08:45 Priest, got him a new bit of hardware.
08:47 No sadly it wasn't new tag titles to replace those ghastly and ugly rubbish penny belts
08:53 with their gaudy straps, but instead a new Money in the Bank briefcase.
08:56 Which is purple.
08:57 Sami came out to banter with them for a bit, and J.D. made a match with him for later on.
09:02 Shayna Baszler beat Zoey Stark in a hard-hitting match and showed respect to her afterwards,
09:05 so a potential new tag partnership on the cards there, and Raquel Rodriguez quickly
09:09 beat Chelsea Green to give her some momentum for a title rematch with Ripley next week.
09:13 Green also announced backstage that Piper Niven currently isn't cleared to wrestle
09:16 because those tag belts are f***ing cursed.
09:19 Turns out though that Piper Niven has actually only been out for a few weeks.
09:23 Ok right.
09:25 Let's talk about the next segment.
09:28 Miz came out for a Miz TV with a special guest.
09:31 It was John Cena.
09:33 But you see, you can't see him.
09:37 So Miz interviewed an empty chair and then had a brawl with him and stood tall with a
09:40 skull crushing finale.
09:42 I don't think I have the words to describe this.
09:44 So I'm going to throw it to comedy expert Galvatron to give his verdict.
09:51 You are not wrong there Galvatron.
09:53 Look I get it, I am nearly 40 years old, you can probably tell that, I just used a pop
09:57 culture reference from a movie that came out nearly 40 years ago.
10:00 But this.
10:01 Oh this was beyond cringe.
10:04 It was so painfully unfunny.
10:07 It wasn't funny, it wasn't big, and it wasn't clever.
10:10 And then Miz did his usual "I'm no serious Miz" promo to cut a promo on LA Night and
10:15 it was f***ing garbage.
10:16 J.D. McDonough picked up a win over Sami Zayn thanks to distraction and interference from
10:21 Dominik Mysterio, who then offered Jey Uso a spot in Judgment Day as he understands what
10:25 it's like to come from a broken family with a deadbeat Hall of Fame dad.
10:29 Jey's first Raw feud being with Judgment Day is a good idea.
10:32 And the main event saw Gunther retain his Intercontinental Championship over Chad Gable
10:37 in an excellent, excellent historic match.
10:41 It's a shame that so much of it was spent in ad breaks.
10:45 They wrestled for two minutes, and then we got a three minute ad break, and then they
10:48 wrestled for another three minutes, and we got another three minute ad break.
10:52 WWE are lucky that Gunther and Gable are so good to overcome this because the final few
10:57 minutes were so great, but honestly the ad breaks ruined the first two thirds of this
11:03 match.
11:04 But it was also a match that saved what was a pretty average episode of Raw.
11:07 It was a fine episode with a handful of newsworthy bits, but also a lot of things we've seen
11:12 before.
11:13 Rollins continuing his feud with Nakamura, Miz continuing his feud with Eleonora, Raquel
11:17 Rodriguez continuing her feud with Rhea Ripley, and Sami Zayn continuing to feud with Judgment
11:21 Day really made it feel like a lot of payback didn't matter at all.
11:26 But still I'm going to score this episode 3 out of 5.
11:35 (upbeat music)
