00:00 In California, Andrew Schatz, bitten by a pacific seal, finally reaches the entrance of the trail and falls on a forest guard.
00:08 When I encountered the reindeer, I just kind of yelled out and I said, "Hey, I got bit by a snake!"
00:15 I basically fell off the bike. I tried to stand up, but I can barely stand.
00:21 It was kind of like I was straight, but I was completely lucid.
00:27 As she got on the bike, I started to feel a little bit of a swell over my body.
00:32 And then, in the helicopter, I felt the tourniquet started to really look down on my foot.
00:38 It was literally doubled in size.
00:41 It's been an hour and a half since the bit, and Andrew has severe swelling.
00:46 The tourniquet was keeping that hurt in the skin in a way where it could be blocked by the blood clot.
00:54 This could lead to a high level of swelling, tissue damage, or even amputation if the tissue damage and necrosis is that bad.
01:01 By the time we got to the hospital, my leg was still extremely swollen. The pain was still very, very strong.
01:10 Andrew is far from knowing that this is just the beginning of his fight.
01:13 The doctors immediately put him under morphine and give him a first dose of antivenin.
01:18 But the symptoms persist.
01:21 He said, "It's weird. It doesn't seem to be getting better."
01:23 The doctor came in and said, "Another dose of antivenin."
01:26 Despite the massive doses of antivenin, Andrew's condition is not improving.
01:30 He is transferred to Loma Linda Hospital in Southern California, specializing in snake bites.
01:36 When I arrived at Loma Linda, my leg had already begun to swell, and it had really begun to turn a purple hue to it.
01:45 It was also degrading to the nerve. It was spreading all over the leg. It was already getting back. I mean, it just was like not real. It was like a photomontage.
01:53 I was very concerned that for some reason I was not responding well to the antivenin, and that I might lose my leg.
02:01 Due to this very bad leg, and also the morphine, the amputation, the trachea, Andrew is at high risk of Parkinson's.
02:08 Parkinson's is very, very serious.
02:11 It has to do with the idea that a severe swelling exerts a good pressure on blood vessels and tissues,
02:18 and thereby blocking the flow of blood, and causing nervous stimulation to various tissues, which cause death of those tissues.
02:26 This is a huge problem because Andrew lost his foot.
