00:02 - Came here with very humble beginnings.
00:12 I was here as an immigrant, lived in a homeless shelter.
00:17 And here I am, the only Afro-American cardiologist
00:21 in Louisiana right now that owns her own practice.
00:25 - Things like I never did know they make
00:29 black nurseries.
00:31 I said, "Oh yeah, they make them."
00:32 - I just sat on the white side of the cafeteria.
00:36 This time there was a little window there
00:40 where black people had to go and order their meals,
00:45 order their tray.
00:46 We could not sit in the cafeteria
00:48 or go through the line and choose.
00:50 You had to tell them what you want.
00:52 And then there was a very small area
00:54 that blacks were allowed to sit in.
00:58 - Today's students, I see that the girls
01:03 seem to grasp it faster and they embrace it.
01:07 They want to know more, they're more engaged.
01:12 I see, I feel that the reason that the area
01:17 is so male dominated is because men were allowed
01:21 to study and to go on and they got the jobs.
01:25 I don't think that women were ever not interested.
01:28 They just seemed to follow what society
01:31 thought was their place.
01:32 - If you're gonna go into science or engineering,
01:35 you need to get as much math as possible
01:38 because those are math related fields.
01:41 And see with me, I told you I got my first degree
01:43 and I didn't do that well because I didn't realize
01:46 at the time that my math was my strong point.
01:50 'Cause I knew as a child, math always came easy to me.
01:53 Learning always came easy to me, you know.
01:55 And I was just able to really, I would tell young people,
01:59 get as much math as you can, get into some STEM program,
02:03 take as much algebra, trigonometry as you can
02:06 to get that background.
02:07 And that would help you to be able to go
02:09 into any science or engineering field.
02:11 - How do we change the face of STEM?
02:14 We change the face of STEM by showing others
02:17 that all of us can do STEM.
02:21 I often wonder who says you can't.
02:23 There are so many people saying that we can't.
02:26 And as blacks and those of us that are in STEM,
02:29 we know that you can.
02:31 It may be hard, there may be plenty of doors
02:33 that are closed on you, but we know that you can.
