00:04 The Cowboy G-Men in Centerfire, starring Russell Hayden as Pat Gallagher and Jackie Coogan as Stoney Crockett.
00:12 [Music]
00:18 In the summer of 1888, word spread across the nation that anthrax had broken out in California.
00:23 [Music]
00:26 Anthrax is a deadly fever capable of wiping out whole herds of livestock.
00:30 [Music]
00:33 With the threat of a nationwide spread of the disease, the government asked for an immediate emergency investigation for a quick solution to stop this killer of animals.
00:42 There was no Bureau of Animal Industry in those days.
00:45 Even the states had no official posts for the regulation of livestock.
00:49 [Music]
00:59 So federal authority turned to its one sure source of information, the Secret Service.
01:04 Assigned to the job were agents Pat Gallagher and Stoney Crockett.
01:08 [Music]
01:22 The story of this government investigation begins on the California ranch of Jose Delgado.
01:27 And it begins with the activities of these two men, John Vance, a veterinarian, and Laswell, his assistant.
01:35 Let's use the pinnow. Get in and hold his head.
01:38 [Music]
01:53 One momento, senor. Put away that needle.
01:55 Senor Delgado.
01:57 Si, Delgado. What are you two doing in my rancho?
02:01 We came out to see if any of your horses had anthrax.
02:05 Already you shoot my horse with a hypodermic needle. Why?
02:09 He looks kind of sick.
02:11 This is a lie, senor. This horse is clear-eyed and well.
02:15 And I will tell you what you would do with a hypodermic needle.
02:18 You would make him sick so you can frighten me about the others and make me pay much money to keep them well.
02:24 Now wait a minute, Delgado. You're talking out of turn.
02:27 I've only begun to talk, senor.
02:30 You had no right to touch the horse without my permission.
02:33 You will go into town with me to see the sheriff. Now get on your horses.
02:36 Just as you say, senor Delgado.
02:40 Give me time to put my needle away.
02:45 I think you better change your mind about this, Delgado.
02:49 You don't know how close you are to being dead.
02:51 We shall see, senor.
02:54 Get on your horses. You can tell the alibi to the sheriff.
02:58 [gunshots]
03:07 Hey, Vance, this horse is headed towards the ranch house.
03:09 No, he isn't.
03:10 [gunshots]
03:15 I did it. He's heading the other way.
03:17 There. We better get out of here.
03:20 [horses galloping]
03:38 [music]
03:58 Well, so this is a royal granny, huh? Not a bad looking little town.
04:03 I wonder how the water is here.
04:05 I don't know. We'll check on that after we talk to Vatnayan.
04:09 We've got to make up for a lot of lost time, Stoney.
04:11 Right.
04:16 This was horse-raising country, close to the Pacific Ocean.
04:19 And Arroyo Grande was the center point of it all.
04:48 [music]
04:54 Dr. Vance doesn't seem to be here.
04:55 No, I guess we'll have to wait, Stoney.
04:57 Hey, Pat, how much do you know about this anthrax?
05:00 I don't know an awful lot, Stoney.
05:02 But there's some reference books. Maybe we can find out something about it.
05:06 Here's a book of information over here.
05:08 Now, that may give it to us.
05:10 Anthrax.
05:13 Anthrax. A-N...
05:15 Here it is.
05:17 Anthrax. A highly infectious disease.
05:20 Prevalent in marshy areas.

06:05 Anthrax fever?
06:07 I sure hope someone finds out something about it, or we're in real trouble.
06:11 Who says it's anthrax?
06:13 The horse doctor, and he should know.
06:15 Any of your animals sick?
06:16 Not yet, but a friend of mine over Santa Paula Way has lost half his herd already.
06:21 That's why I want the doc to look at mine before it's too late.
06:24 Who's this friend of yours over Santa Paula Way?
06:26 Clem Bowers, Broken Wire Ranch.
06:29 Where did this first break out?
06:31 On Bowers Ranch.
06:33 Who discovered it?
06:34 Doc Vance, and he's working like a madman trying to stop it.

07:00 Hi, Broden. What can I do for you?
07:02 I'd like you to come on out and take a look at those horses of mine.

07:16 No, I guess not, but we've got a report to make out.
07:18 I'd like to ask you a few questions, if we may.
07:21 I don't have much time, but go ahead.
07:23 Have you had any rain lately, Doctor?
07:25 No, no rain. Why?
07:27 Well, it's my understanding that anthrax doesn't usually break out in dry areas.
07:31 Are you sure this is anthrax?
07:33 Of course I'm sure.
07:34 Animals can get anthrax from breathing the dust.
07:37 Yes, but that doesn't happen very often, does it, Doctor Vance?
07:40 Have you had any infections in cattle?
07:43 Well, not yet that I know of, but there probably will be.
07:46 I'm sorry I haven't got any more time to waste talking to you.

08:23 Not me.
08:24 How about you fellas doing it?

08:30 Any anthrax out there?

08:34 All right, we'll ride out and see if we can't find Senor Delgado.
08:37 Come on, boys.
