  • last year
India's Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander completed a soft-landing on the moon a few days ago.
India is the first country to land on the lunar south pole.

00:00 After the rough breaking and the attitude hold phase, we shall be having the fine breaking phase,
00:05 which will continue for nearly 3 minutes.
00:10 The hold phase is being driven by the autonomous landing sequencer and there is no intervention from ground.
00:21 Yes, Arushi, you can see on your screen that the current altitude is about 10 km from the moon.
00:34 Yes, our Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi has joined Johannesburg, South Africa to encourage us all.
00:54 Yes, we are privileged to have with us Honorable Prime Minister of India,
01:14 Mr. Narendra Modi, who has joined us from South Africa's Johannesburg to encourage us.
01:24 Yes, you can see that the attitude hold phase has been easily passed by the lander phase
01:35 and the fine breaking has begun.
01:39 Now we can see that the height of the lander is about 5.6 km, which will be about 800 m above the phase.
01:53 We can hear from the mission operations team that the sensors are performing nominally
02:05 and we are currently in the midst of the fine breaking phase, which is going to continue for 3 minutes
02:12 and the altitude is going to be reduced to nearly 800 m at the end of this phase.
02:19 Yes, as Arushi said, after 3 minutes the height of the lander will be about 800 m vertically
02:29 and the horizontal velocity, vertical velocity and even downrange of the lander will be about 0.
02:38 We can see the visual of the lander module and we can see that the downrange travelled is nearly 831 km.
03:02 Yes, you can see on your screen that the height of the lander has reduced to 3 km above the moon surface.
03:15 We are very close to the moon surface, nearly 2.6 km as we can see.
03:44 Yes, you can see that the height of the lander is about 1 km.
03:54 We are nearing the final phase of the power descent, which is going to be the vertical descent phase
04:12 or the local navigation phase.
04:14 Yes, we are very close to the final phase of the power descent.
04:23 You can hear the applause that we have successfully completed the third phase of the power descent.
04:32 We have now come to the vertical descent phase, which has started off very well.
04:44 Lot of applause indicates that till now the performance has been nominal.
04:51 We are in the vertical descent phase 1.
04:57 The altitude is being brought down from 800 m and we are nearing and approaching the lunar surface.
05:07 Yes, you can see on your screen that the height of the lander is decreasing.
05:16 We are just above the landing site and the height is about 600 m.
05:23 During this phase, after reaching the height of about 150 m, the lander will hover again for about 20 to 22 seconds.
05:35 We are above the landing site.
05:40 The horizontal as well as the vertical velocity is now being constantly reduced
05:47 and the lander module has begun its descent towards the landing site.
05:53 Yes, you can see on your screen that the path has been decided and the lander is following it.
06:13 At this time, we have come down to about 200 m.
06:18 Now we can see that we are at an altitude of about 150 m from the lunar surface.
06:32 Yes, you can hear the applause which is being done by all these scientists after the completion of the second hybrid phase.
06:59 Yes, if you look carefully, the altitude is decreasing again.
07:09 Now we are at an altitude of about 135 m.
07:14 The sensors that are updating at this point are providing confirmation of the safety of the landing site.
07:32 Now you can see that the height of the lander is about 65 m.
07:46 Currently only two engines are now being fired and we are nearly at zero velocity, vertical and horizontal.
07:56 We were hovering and now we are approaching the moon surface.
08:02 Slowly the speed of the lander is being reduced and we have now come down to about 50 m.
08:15 We can see the Honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ji, who is here to encourage us
08:22 and he is critically looking at the visuals.
08:45 People are applauding. Let us all wait to hear from the Secretary Department of Space and Chairman ISRO, Shri S Somnath.
08:57 The lander module has landed safely and softly on the moon surface.
09:04 This is a matter of great pride for us.
09:07 There is a saying in Hindi, "Chanda Mama Door Ke" but now we can say, "Chanda Mama Apne Ghar Ke".
09:15 Very good. The hard work of the entire ISRO community has come to fruition.
09:21 Honorable Prime Minister, greetings.
09:40 Sir, we have achieved soft landing on the moon. India is on the moon.
09:46 the moon. [Applause]
