00:02 The mothering cubs on the horizon
00:06 emerged from their den last year.
00:08 Mothers give birth to two or three cubs,
00:19 but conditions here are so brutal,
00:21 only one usually makes it to their first birthday.

00:26 This mom is teaching her cub how to survive the winter.
00:33 She has taught him to walk with his head low
00:45 to blend in with the snow drifts and smell for prey.

00:51 The only female bears on the ice at this time of year
00:59 are caring for their cubs.
01:01 The rest have entered their dens
01:03 where they will give birth and reemerge in the spring.
01:06 A storm is approaching.

01:19 The mother finds shelter in a snowbank
01:22 and curls up into a tight ball to keep warm.
01:26 She shows her cub how to place his paws over his muzzle,
01:29 which radiates heat.
01:30 A white bear is superbly camouflaged
01:36 against a snow white background,
01:38 noticeable only by his dark nose.
01:41 When the bear covers his nose with a paw,
01:43 he becomes almost invisible.

01:49 But the cub isn't in the mood for a snooze
01:54 and he heads out to forage on the ice.
01:56 The cub will stay with his mother
02:10 for his first two and a half years of life,
02:12 learning how to hunt, den, and ultimately survive.
