Today onion has brought tears to the eyes of farmers in Maharashtra. This is the same onion whose high rising prices had taken away Shushma Swaraj's Chief Minister's chair. Since then the BJP has not come back to power.

Asia's largest onion The Agriculture Produce Market Committee in Nashik's Lasalgaon. Which is crowded with farmers and traders is silent today as the onion farmers have announced an indefinite protest against the Centre's imposition of a 40 percent export duty on the kitchen staple.

Onion auctions had resumed for some time on Thursday after being stalled since Monday but were stopped later after the farmers claimed that they did not get the Rs 2,410 quintal as promised by NAFED, an apex organization under the Union Agriculture Ministry. Despite assurance from Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, and Agriculture Minister Dhanajay Munde, the farmers allege that NAFED has still not purchased the onions and they are not getting the right price for their produce. HW News English interacted with farmers in Lasalgaon to understand their plight. Let's listen in.

02:17 The reason is the export duty has been surged for the traders.
02:22 Because of this, the traders are paying less for the produce.
02:25 So eventually the farmer is at loss.
02:27 Neither the traders are at loss nor the government and the farmers are always at loss.
02:32 We don't even have money to pay our children's fees.

04:45 Last month, the government launched the Chandrayantri.
04:48 It has reached its destination but it looks like to compensate for the cost,
04:53 the government has imposed a 40% export duty.
04:57 If the government cares for the common man,
04:59 then why has the government not purchased the onions through Nafed?
05:03 Only the traders are purchasing our onions and you are imposing import duty on them.
05:09 If this does not stop, we will express our anger in the upcoming elections through pressing the button.
05:16 Only then will you realize the consequences of causing distress to the farmers.
05:21 You can launch as many spaceships as you want but lift this 40% export duty.
05:27 This is my request to the government.
