Director Charlotte Regan and actors Lola Campbell and Harris Dickinson speak to Yahoo UK about their experience making British indie flick Scrapper. Scrapper is in UK cinemas from Friday, 25 August.
Transcript
00:00 I was talking to Harris and Lola earlier,
00:01 they were saying how you gave them a lot of freedom on set,
00:04 you allowed them to improvise a lot,
00:06 which I thought was quite nice,
00:07 but I wondered why was that important for you to do that?
00:09 And also, did you want them to draw on their own experiences
00:13 at all to inform their characters?
00:16 - Not so much their own experiences,
00:19 particularly with Lola, we were always keen to be like,
00:21 this is fiction and we don't want you to feel
00:24 how the character feels,
00:25 it's very separate from real life,
00:27 and nor are they at all the character,
00:30 Lola would not be seen dead in a football top
00:31 or a tracksuit, she's the most stylish
00:34 like 13 year old I've ever met.
00:35 So they weren't very close to their real characters,
00:39 but I don't know, I think it's just maybe
00:41 how I've always worked,
00:42 'cause it's like you're employing actors
00:45 and they can do a much better job at acting than you can,
00:49 so improv just gives them a chance to create
00:51 and take ownership over the role,
00:54 and Lola in particular is incredible with improv
00:57 and all the best dialogue I would credit to her
01:00 within the film, she would change other people's lines
01:02 and they would be better than my written lines,
01:04 I'm hoping she's gonna be like Steven Spielberg
01:07 in 20 years or whatever,
01:08 'cause she's a much better filmmaker than me for sure,
01:11 she'd tell me shots were bad,
01:13 she'd get involved in it all, it was great.
01:15 - Charlotte sort of allowed us to move away from the script
01:19 whenever we felt like it.
01:20 - Go with the flow.
01:21 - Just go with the flow,
01:23 so it makes it easier,
01:25 'cause you don't sort of feel confined by anything.
01:29 - Pressure to go on that.
01:30 - Yeah, yeah, we just did what we wanted at times.
01:33 Sometimes you would go on these tangents
01:37 and end up somewhere completely random,
01:41 but often those were the good takes.
