00:00 From the return of yet another beloved Keanu Reeves feature figure, to a magical comeback
00:04 for a much-loved heist series, these are those movie franchise continuations you likely had
00:09 no idea were very much on the horizon.
00:11 Well, not anymore, 'cause Gareth here from WhatCulture.com and here are 10 Movie Sequels
00:16 You Didn't Realise Were Happening.
00:18 10.
00:19 Gladiator 2
00:20 For what feels like an age, Ridley Scott has been entertaining the idea of a follow-up
00:24 to his 2000 historical epic by the name of Gladiator.
00:28 Even though the little element of Russell Crowe's Maximus not actually making it out
00:31 of that Oscar-winning tale alive may have made that sequel concept seem pretty foolish
00:36 at one point, that hasn't stopped the director and writer David Scarpa from apparently finding
00:40 a way to reignite the Gladiator machine.
00:43 According to Scott himself just last year, the script for said long-awaited second chapter
00:47 of the Gladiator story is now officially ready to go, with the legendary director gearing
00:52 himself up to step back into Maximus' world for a tale set 25 to 30 years on from the
00:57 prior entry.
00:58 As he'd explained to Deadline in November 2021, "It's already been written.
01:02 We have a good footprint, a good, logical place to go.
01:05 You can't just do another Gladiator-type movie.
01:07 You've got to follow.
01:08 There's enough components from the first one to pick up the ball and continue it."
01:12 And while Crowe's involvement with the upcoming sequel hasn't been officially confirmed
01:15 at time of recording, the Australian star who helped put the first film on the map is
01:19 heavily expected to make his presence felt in some capacity, with much of the incoming
01:23 story being said to centre around Lucius, the son of Lucilla.
01:27 9.
01:28 A Quiet Place Day One
01:29 This one technically leans more towards the prequel category, but it'll still likely
01:33 come as a welcome surprise to many to hear that we haven't actually seen the last of
01:37 all things A Quiet Place on the big screen.
01:39 And while a follow-up to the events of 2020's Part 2 felt pretty much certain on the back
01:44 of the first two outings for the Abbott family, smashing it at the box office - and was ultimately
01:48 confirmed by John Krasinski earlier this year - the fact another Quiet Place story will
01:53 also be making its way into existence in the near future was a development that largely
01:57 slipped under the radar.
01:59 Said spin-off, by the name of A Quiet Place Day One, will focus on the events that unfolded
02:03 on the first day the series' terrifying aliens made their presence known on Earth.
02:08 Further expanding on the second film's chilling opening flashback sequence, and though Krasinski
02:13 will reportedly be returning to direct the third entry in the main Quiet Place saga,
02:17 the office star will move into a producing role for the spin-off, with Pig's Michael
02:21 Sarnoski instead stepping into the director position for the no-doubt horrifying flick
02:25 set to be released in March 2024.
02:30 It turns out that Paramount Pictures are far from finished with this particular anthology
02:34 series.
02:35 As reported by Deadline last month, yet another dose of Cloverfield madness is set to be unleashed
02:39 by the studio on the back of the last entry in the series, by the name of The Cloverfield
02:43 Paradox - released on that occasion by Netflix, not exactly setting the world on fire.
02:48 This next instalment will see Babak Anvari directing, and Joe Barton penning a script
02:53 that - as with just about any Cloverfield project - has had its details kept strictly
02:57 under-wrapped at this current moment in time.
02:59 Though it is worth noting how the upcoming sequel's producer J.J. Abrams was quick to
03:04 state that the film would be a "true, dedicated Cloverfield sequel" when nudged on the matter
03:08 at 2018's CinemaCon.
03:10 Could this be a more traditional follow-up to 2008's found-footage smash hit?
03:14 Sources are already stating said found-footage style won't be present, so it remains to
03:19 be seen what Abrams and his team are cooking up with this latest piece of Cloverfield chaos.
03:24 7.
03:25 Constantine 2 Joining the likes of Bill & Ted and the Matrix
03:28 franchises both finding new ways to unleash another much-loved Keanu Reeves entity back
03:33 into fans' lives, it looks like none other than John Constantine himself is set for another
03:38 round of supernatural mysteries on the big screen too.
03:41 Who'd have thunk it?
03:42 Both Reeves and the original Constantine films director Francis Lawrence have agreed to join
03:46 forces once again with Warner Bros for a planned sequel to that 2005 super-horror caper, with
03:52 Akiva Goldsman being brought in to pen the script for the long-awaited Constantine comeback.
03:56 Not much is known about the follow-up outside of Reeves very much dusting off his supernatural
04:01 exorcist and demonologist coat-mind, but judging from Lawrence's comments of it being great
04:05 to do the really dark, scary version, when talking about the potential of stepping back
04:09 into the underworld for another Constantine tale back in 2011, there's every chance fans
04:14 may be treated to a much darker and more horrifying take on the character this time around.
04:19 6.
04:20 The Expendables 4 Despite at one point looking like the adrenaline-fuelled
04:23 action-packed series had very much had its day in the sun, it seems as though Sylvester
04:28 Stallone's big, meaty franchise is set to finally get its long-awaited fourth instalment.
04:33 On the back of the third Expendables ensemble flick not exactly smashing it at the box office
04:37 in the way the prior two entries had, news of Stallone apparently walking away from the
04:41 property over creative differences in 2017 looked to all but kill any hopes of a violent
04:47 final hurrah for Sly.
04:48 However, by September 2021, bridges were mended to the point of actually beginning filming
04:53 on the last outing for Barney Ross, with the latest chapter of the star-studded action
04:58 series being reportedly centred around a nuclear conflict between Russia and the US that the
05:03 titular characters find themselves being dragged into.
05:05 And in regards to precisely when this Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture
05:10 starring and Scott Wilde directing ride will actually land in cinemas, well a September
05:15 2023 release was recently finally made official by Lionsgate.
05:19 5.
05:20 Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Matt Reeves' final chapter in the Andy Serkis-led
05:24 Caesar Apes tale felt like the sort of conclusion that would be a pretty tough act to follow
05:28 for anyone.
05:29 But that's precisely what 20th Century Studios are reportedly setting out to do, with the
05:34 recent announcement of yet another Apes movie very much heading fans' way in the coming
05:38 years.
05:39 Picking the story up several years after the ending of that last entry, Kingdom of the
05:43 Planet of the Apes will star the likes of The Witcher's Freya Allen and The Orville's
05:47 Peter Makin, with Owen Teague set to play the film's lead ape Cornelius, the son of
05:52 Serkis' Caesar.
05:53 Little else is known about what the flick will entail at this point, but the first image
05:57 released by 20th Century Studios depicts Teague's Cornelius on a horse, set against the backdrop
06:03 of a waterfall and ruins, as he greets an eagle about to land on his arm.
06:07 How majestic.
06:08 Maze Runner's Wes Ball will also be in charge of directing duties this time around, with
06:12 the latest chapter in the long-running Apes saga making its way into theatres in 2024.
06:17 4.
06:18 Transformers Rise of the Beasts It's safe to say that next to no one was
06:22 really desperately clamouring to see yet another chunk of robot fighting and mechanical mayhem
06:27 be pumped into existence on the back of the last lacklustre Transformers blockbuster,
06:31 The Last Knight.
06:32 But then a little spin-off picture by the name of Bumblebee became a thing in 2018,
06:36 and appeared to almost single-handedly jumpstart a new wave of interest in all things Autobots
06:41 and Decepticons.
06:43 So much so that yet another attempt to restore some respect to the Transformers brand is
06:47 very much on its way into theatres next year, with Rise of the Beasts picking up a few years
06:52 after the events of the aforementioned Bumblebee tale.
06:54 This time around, the flick will see figures and creatures from the Beast Wars spin-off
06:58 TV series introduced into the transforming bot mix, with Maximals, Predacons and Terracons
07:04 all set to make their presence known during the 2023 outing.
07:08 And joining a returning Peter Cullen as the unmistakable voice of Optimus Prime is none
07:12 other than Ron Pellman going full Optimus Primal too.
07:15 If all that wasn't enough, a brand new trilogy is also expected to get underway following
07:20 on from Rise of the Beasts.
07:22 So buckle up for an endless supply of bashing robots.
07:25 3.
07:26 The American Pie Though the American Pie brand has continually
07:29 spawned countless throwaway "presents" spin-offs over the years, with everything
07:33 from Bandcamp to The Naked Male not exactly living long in the memory, the central OG
07:38 character's tale looked to have reached its natural and somewhat satisfying nostalgia-filled
07:42 conclusion with 2012's Reunion.
07:44 But a decade on from the original series' final outing, it now looks as though the pie
07:48 is on the verge of being given an entirely new flavour, with it recently being announced
07:53 that Definition Please filmmaker Sanjata Dey will be penning the next instalment of the
07:57 franchise.
07:58 And while information on the plot of this latest pie picture has not been revealed at
08:02 time of recording, Dey's original pitch and the story that was born out of it is being
08:06 described by those in the know as a fresh take on the series.
08:10 With the previous films managing to rope in nearly $1 billion at the box office already,
08:14 it's not too difficult to see why Universal 1440 Entertainment are so keen to stick this
08:19 particular sex comedy treat back in the oven.
08:22 So it'll be interesting to see how Dey approaches a rather sensitive subject and
08:26 genre of flick that likely needs a bit of an update and rethink before getting unleashed
08:31 onto a modern audience.
08:32 2.
08:33 Armor Wars
08:34 Initially conceived as part of Marvel Studios' never-ending stream of Disney+ TV offerings,
08:39 there was a point when it felt as though the Don Cheadle-starring Armor Wars was in real
08:43 danger of getting lost in the shuffle by the time it actually touched down on the streaming
08:47 service.
08:48 Seemingly feeling the same way or simply sensing there was more potential in having Cheadle's
08:52 Colonel James Rhodes strut his stuff as War Machine on the big screen rather than in a
08:56 six-part series, it was recently announced that the MCU sequel will now actually be making
09:01 its way into the world as a movie instead.
09:04 Perhaps this is a response to some fans' criticism of many of the recent Marvel - and
09:08 other Disney live-action series for that matter - often feeling as though they're spreading
09:12 their story material a little thin, in order to fit the multiple-episode runtime.
09:17 Or maybe the tale being crafted by Ysir Lester just suits the cinematic realm more than the
09:22 small-screen one.
09:23 Either way, what fans first expected to be War Machine's corner of the TV Marvel universe,
09:27 now looks to be blasting into theatres between 2023 and 2025 instead.
09:32 1.
09:33 Now You See Me 3
09:34 If there's one thing in this world Ruben Fleischer loves more than Jesse Eisenberg
09:37 and Woody Harrelson, it's that majestic world of wonder known as magic.
09:41 Well, that's how the director put it recently when discussing his reasons for saying yes
09:46 to helming the latest piece of no-doubt mind-blowing spectacle to tumble out of the Now You See
09:50 Me series.
09:52 With Fleischer collaborating with the two stars in question during the Zombieland flicks,
09:55 there's every reason to believe the director will once again be able to produce, erm, magic
09:59 on the third time of asking.
10:01 Yay!
10:02 With the figure behind Uncharted and Venom also confessing to being something of a lifelong
10:06 fan of heist movies, it's clear the director is simply champing at the bit to get going
10:11 on a follow-up to the series' last financially successful outing, claiming "when the thieves
10:15 are magicians, the opportunities are endless".
10:18 Though no official casting announcements have been made at this point, Fleischer's name-dropping
10:22 of Eisenberg and Harrelson seems to suggest they're dusting off their playing cards
10:26 for the third flick.
10:27 But it's still not known whether the likes of Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo and Morgan Freeman
10:31 will be returning for Now You See Me 3 at this time, or even when the impending threequel
10:36 will arrive in theatres.
10:38 Yet as Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Nathan Kahane would also note, "For everyone
10:43 we've kept in suspense, the wait is almost over".
10:45 Well, you heard him, folks.
10:47 And that's our list of any other movie sequels you didn't realise were happening.
