00:00 It's a popular time of year for the Yorkshire coast as lots of people flock to the seaside
00:07 from Scarborough to Whitby.
00:10 Here whilst Whitby is famous for Dracula, Captain Cook and of course fish and chips,
00:17 that's not forgetting some of its oldest sweet shops and also the new ones too.
00:23 It's been a sweet shop for a long long time, various owners, it was run for a long long
00:38 time by a mother and son, they retired and recently sold the property but not the business.
00:46 It's always been a sweet shop and it sells, the majority of sweets it sells are from the
00:51 jars which are at the back of you.
00:54 We sell some modern bars of chocolate but it's quirky because we're selling out of the
00:58 jars, people think it's an old-fashioned sweet shop and a lot of the sweets are old-fashioned,
01:04 they've stood the test of time.
01:06 And what would you say are some of the favourite mixes that people go for?
01:10 Depends how old the people are, the older people, older generations go for pear drops,
01:15 Yorkshire mix, sherbet lemons, strawberry sherbets, they go for the hard boil sweets
01:22 where you get the younger generation go for the Haribo type, Hariton type sweets which
01:28 are a lot softer, probably contain a lot more sugar as well but it's a generation thing
01:34 and then at the other end, this is the most popular section of the shop because the days
01:41 of boxes of chocolates have sort of vanished because you were buying boxes of chocolates
01:47 with sweets you didn't really want.
01:49 Here you're picking the ones that you want so this is our most popular selection of sweets.
01:56 So Whitby, the home of fish and chips, Captain Cook and obviously Dracula but we're actually
02:02 going to check out some of the sweet shops here.
02:04 So we've been to an old-school one and now we're off to the Orange Frog Confectionery
02:09 and Co because apparently youngsters are more into their gummies than the hard boiled so
02:14 let's go and check it out.
02:17 My name's Stephen Welford and I'm the owner of the Orange Frog Sweet Shop.
02:21 And how long has this sweet shop been going?
02:23 It's just had its ninth birthday.
02:25 And what's people appetite like because apparently the hard boiled sweets aren't as popular anymore
02:31 and it's more this American candy that's actually trending.
02:34 I would say it's based on usually YouTube and TikTok, mostly trends.
02:43 It's mainly popularity.
02:47 I wouldn't say it's any one individual variety.
02:52 And what made you start the sweet shop?
02:54 When I was at university I was selling Haribo on eBay and it just kind of kicked off from
02:59 that.
03:00 So we're also going to try the pickle challenge.
03:04 What do we do, Summer?
03:05 Scran your pickle!
03:06 Scran your pickle!
03:07 On camera.
03:08 When did you start selling fudge and sweets?
03:09 This has been here about 35 years.
03:10 Two different owners but the guy that's got it now has had it about 22 years.
03:11 And how popular is it?
03:12 Very popular.
03:13 I mean, to be honest, at the minute with everybody in recession and everything else we're struggling
03:14 to get people to come and buy.
03:15 So we've been trying to get people to come and buy.
03:16 And we've been trying to get people to come and buy.
03:17 And we've been trying to get people to come and buy.
