Chris Olave meets with the media to talk about his successes and the Saints receiver room.
Transcript
00:00 >> Chris, Derek was talking the other day about just your kind of ability to be
00:05 where he wants you to be and just kind of being on the same page.
00:09 And how do you establish that, how you develop that?
00:12 >> Just having a feel for the game.
00:15 I feel like just having a feel for the game, like I said.
00:19 I mean, it's rocks on paper, but once you get in the field and
00:22 see the coverage and everything, just try to find that open space.
00:25 And being there on your own, I feel like that's what I'm gonna do.
00:28 >> Does that just come with a lot of time, or
00:30 is it, do you just have a sense of space on the field?
00:34 >> Yeah, I just really got a feel for the game.
00:37 I'm just trying to be in the correct eyesight of the quarterback,
00:40 being in the right space, wherever my route is.

00:47 >> Chris, you're not super chatty here, but out there, you say a lot.
00:52 Where'd the flip come?
00:54 >> Just competitiveness.
00:56 I feel like when it's competition, I'm always out front.
01:00 I always wanna play against the best, go against the best.
01:03 Especially out here, when we play against other teams, we practice.
01:07 I feel like it makes me better, it makes them better.
01:10 So I feel like that's why I'm out front, competitive and stuff.
01:17 >> So how much do you enjoy, I guess, joint practices and
01:20 not seeing your own guys all the time?
01:23 >> I enjoy it, man.
01:23 Just going against new guys, like I said, having our guys going against their best,
01:28 or having our best going against their best, I feel like makes everybody better.
01:31 So just getting out here in the good weather, and
01:34 back in California, I feel like it was a good time to compete.
01:38 >> Now you've had a couple weeks to work with Derek.
01:42 Now what's the one thing that really just stands out about him,
01:47 and why he's been able to have success in this league for ten years?
01:50 >> I just feel like he's calm, I mean, he's comfortable being uncomfortable.
01:54 He's calm in tough situations.
01:57 Always through his readings, even when something's cloudy,
01:59 through his readings, it makes it easier on us.
02:03 Now he's getting to the backside on routes, and
02:06 just trying to run every route full speed.
02:08 We know he can go to the wall at any time.
02:10 [BLANK_AUDIO]
02:12 >> Chris, what's Mike Thomas just kinda like behind the scenes in the leading role?
02:16 It kinda seems like he's stepping up into more of a leadership role.
02:20 >> Yeah, he's always been a leader since I've been here.
02:22 He's put me under his wing.
02:24 He's been talking a lot more, even when somebody else is on a route right or
02:28 somebody else drops the ball, he's gonna be there to pick you up.
02:32 He's always been a leader in my eyes since I've been here.
02:36 >> We kinda talked to you about this before, but
02:38 you obviously had a lot of success last year.
02:40 What kinda goes into building on that, taking that to the next level?
02:46 When the year finishes up, what are you trying to do?
02:49 >> I feel like everybody's always get better at their craft and their job.
02:53 So just seeing the things that I could develop on and
02:57 making my strengths even more higher.
02:58 So that's what I've been working on.
03:00 So obviously, it's consistent with my work, but those are the main things.
03:06 >> That's like body stuff.
03:07 They're gonna say you added weight.
03:08 Is that part of it, or is there more to it than just being bigger?
03:14 >> I mean, being more flexible, all that stuff goes into it.
03:17 Just being active, of course,
03:19 weights, being able to maintain throughout the season.
03:23 But I work on it all the time.
