00:00 I'm here on set at AFTRS this morning and I'm with Krista Jordan who teaches visual
00:06 and virtual effects here.
00:08 Krista, thanks so much for having me on this beautiful balcony.
00:12 Thanks for coming Ruby.
00:13 Welcome to the AFTRS Volume Studio Bar.
00:16 So AFTRS has been going for 50 years now, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
00:22 In that time, tell me about the kinds of things that this organisation has offered students.
00:27 Oh my gosh, 50 years of continuous excellence in screen education basically.
00:34 The great thing about the AFTRS experience is it was instigated as a really important
00:38 cultural addition to the Australian environment and we have taught thousands of students who've
00:45 worked internationally in screen, story, sound and radio, punching above our weight absolutely
00:52 across the board.
00:54 And today is a really exciting day because it's Open Day here.
00:57 You've opened the doors to prospective students.
01:00 People that come along today, what can they have a look at?
01:02 They can see a plethora of things.
01:05 We can have you join us here on the Volume Stage in Studio 1.
01:09 You could engage with the radio team up in the radio studios.
01:13 You can ask any question of any member of staff or anyone here and get a sense of what
01:18 might be available for you here at AFTRS.
01:21 It's an ask anything kind of day.
01:23 Just come and see anything kind of day and it's both physically here in the AFTRS environment
01:29 here at Moore Park or live streamed.
01:32 You can connect from anywhere in Australia.
01:34 And I want to talk to you a little bit more about this Volume Stage.
01:38 One of the highlights I know and here we are sitting on this high rise balcony having a
01:42 drink.
01:43 Absolutely.
01:44 How has the tech been able to make this happen?
01:46 Well this is an amazing tool and everybody's talking a lot about it now.
01:51 It's called virtual production.
01:52 You'll hear that a lot.
01:54 And this is an amazing piece of kit that allows us to start to teach students how to integrate
01:59 virtual crafts, so stuff that's generated by a computer that you can see in the background
02:03 here with sort of the live action components.
02:06 And it's used in all sorts of ways and been used in all sorts of examples both here and
02:11 overseas.
02:12 Things like Thor, Love and Thunder, even the ABC Fires program used it absolutely fantastically
02:18 to generate an experience about being inside a fire truck in a real fire.
02:25 And one of the benefits of these spaces is the actors get to interact with it and it
02:29 really enhances performance.
02:31 But additionally it's about providing safety.
02:33 So we can tell stories that we haven't previously been able to tell in quite the same way using
02:38 these sorts of bits of toolkit.
