00:00 Muda's options may have narrowed significantly after the trouncing it received at the state
00:04 elections last Saturday.
00:06 Political analyst Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara believes the party is not suited to being
00:11 a third force in Malaysian politics.
00:14 Azmi says the election results show that the party draws from the same voter base as Pakatan
00:18 Harapan.
00:19 "Muda has demonstrated that they can be a very brutal spoiler.
00:25 The contest between PN versus Pakatan Harapan or PN versus BN is very close.
00:34 Muda will attract voters who instead will vote Pakatan Harapan but not PN because their
00:41 demography of voters is totally different.
00:45 So Muda voters is similar to Pakatan Harapan voters.
00:49 So when Muda is together with Pakatan Harapan, it will pull votes from Pakatan Harapan.
00:55 In the end, Pakatan Harapan will lose, not Muda."
00:58 With no word on the outcome of its application to join PH, Muda President Said Sadiq Said
01:02 Abdul Rahman announced in June the party's decision to contest the six state elections
01:07 on its own.
01:09 On August 12th, Muda lost all 19 seats it contested in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Terengganu
01:15 and Penang.
01:16 Its candidates also lost their deposits.
01:18 Azmi thinks Muda's best option is to join the PH coalition.
01:23 Alternatively, he says, the party should merge with either PKR or DAP.
01:28 But that idea does not appeal to DAP Secretary General Lok Siu Fook.
01:33 Political analyst Owei Sun from the Singapore Institute of International Affairs thinks
01:36 a merger is logical but not a priority for DAP.
01:40 "At the macro-political level, it is a logical idea as Muda attracts almost the same cohort
01:48 of supporters as DAP, but it lacks the kind of party machinery as DAP.
01:56 Muda is a plus but not a must for DAP."
02:01 Owei says Muda's immediate priority is to find a way to survive while on the sidelines.
02:06 "While Muda prides itself on its fresh and young political image, it needs to humbly
02:13 learn from the tried and tested methods of more established, previously opposition parties
02:21 such as DAP and PKR.
02:24 This includes persistent and consistent political messaging and more rapport with the grassroots."
02:31 For now, Muda has plenty to think about.
