North west news update 16 Aug 2023: Blaze destroys former nursery school

00:04 A blaze which broke out at a former nursery in Longton last night, Tuesday August 15th,

00:09 is thought to be suspicious. Plumes of thick smoke were seen rising over the village after

00:14 the dilapidated Ladybird Lodge and school lane caught fire at around 7pm. Four fire

00:21 engines were called to the site near Longton Primary School and the recreation ground,

00:26 with crews working at the scene until 9.30pm. The fire service has reported the incident

00:31 to the police.

00:33 A new fitness studio and wellbeing centre could be opening on Vicarage Lane in Poulton

00:38 in place of a former nightclub. An application has been lodged with planners via council.

00:43 The new centre, called JT Fitness, will offer affordable healthcare services, mental health

00:49 support and gym facilities if planning is approved. The business hopes to boost healthy

00:54 living in the local community, opening in place of New Blue Nightclub on Vicarage Road.

01:01 A campaign has been made by an ambitious group to buy Wadrow House in Clitheroe, which is

01:07 one of five activity centres earmarked to be sold off by the Girl Guiding Association.

01:13 The Wadow Hall Trust has been set up as a charitable company with the aim of raising

01:18 funds around £5 million to buy the hall. An active steering group has been formed which

01:23 is working with trustees to raise awareness of the mission. Pledge forms are being collected

01:28 and a crowdfunder will be launched in September.

01:32 And a cobbler who mended a pair of broken shoes after discovering them outside his shop

01:38 has found a happy ending saying Cinderella has got her shoes back. Peter Cole of the

01:43 Market Cobbler in Lancaster discovered the tan wedges on the doorstep of his shop and

01:48 noticed the strap was broken. The 61-year-old repaired the strap free of charge and placed

01:53 a post on Facebook in an attempt to find the owner in a city-wide Cinderella hunt.

01:59 On Tuesday, August 15th, Mr Cork said a woman on behalf of her daughter insisted on paying

02:05 for their repair. Mr Cork said the woman, who did not wish to be named, insisted instead

02:11 to pay £10 to the Walford Wildlife and Dog Rescue Charity. A happy ending after all.
