00:00 Never leave your planet without first packing your luggage.
00:03 Here's a look at the NECA Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ootrom.
00:08 [music]
00:36 This NECA Ultimate Ootrom figure is based on the original Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comic books from Mirage Studios.
00:42 These robot exoskeletons look fierce, but the Ootrons that are peaceful aliens who crashed on Earth and been hiding behind their shell corporation, TCRI.
00:51 This 7-inch scale exoskeleton has removable Ootron, includes interchangeable heads and hands, blaster tools, and is a sippy cup.
00:59 Even tentacle aliens have to stay hydrated.
01:01 Comes in an all-new special comic book themed window box packaging, illustrated by Kevin Eastman himself.
01:08 Now before we take a look at who's in the tummy, I'd like to first thank the folks over at NECA Toys.
01:13 Yes, I would. They did provide this sample of the Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ootrom that we can have a look at this review.
01:20 Grabbing the old tape measure, as of course we always do here on this channel, the Ootrom.
01:24 Technically the Ootrom is only really the alien inside, but of course the exoskeleton as a whole is 6.5 inches in height, or it's going to be about 16.5 centimeters tall.
01:35 Getting going with some size comparisons.
01:38 First, let's bring in the turtle. In this case I'll bring in Leonardo.
01:41 This is Leonardo from the original NECA Mirage comic run, 10+ years ago.
01:45 I do hope at some point we are going to get reissues of these figures for those that missed their chance before.
01:49 Just recently, in fact, also here on this channel, we had a look at the Mirage-inspired Casey Jones.
01:54 When having him though standing next to the exoskeleton, you can see that they're about the same sized figures.
02:00 The figure of Ootrom does quite well for himself in accessories.
02:04 The figure comes in clue with a series of interchangeable hands of varying grips.
02:07 The figure comes in clue also with a blaster, two tools, a sippy cup, and a battle-damaged head sculpt.
02:11 If you want to go to really a deep thought on this, Ootrom technically is the tiny little critter that sits inside the robot exoskeleton.
02:18 You could then use the argument that the exoskeleton is just one big giant articulated accessory for the Ootrom sitting inside of it.
02:26 Wow, that's deep.
02:28 Anyways, the figure comes in clue with some gripping hands.
02:32 We're not going to look at the gripping hands just yet.
02:34 First, the figure comes in clue with some closed fists.
02:36 I've already removed these from the forms. They're likely going to be going back in the tray.
02:39 I'm never probably going to be using these.
02:41 But it gives us a quick chance, a sneak chance, a sneak peek, I should say,
02:44 at some of the detail work that they've panel lined into each of the individual hands.
02:48 And that's even until we start to get down to looking at the accessories of the figure.
02:52 The figure also, like I said, comes in clue with gripping hands of different grips, different sizes, I should say.
02:57 Suitable for, again, holding the tools, the tiny little tools, the blaster, and again, the sippy cup.
03:02 Now, looking at the hands, for example, just to bring these ones back in, and then eventually the hands, we're going to be looking at the forms.
03:07 I didn't think that any of them really would be suitable enough for holding the sippy cup.
03:11 Because if you look at the sippy cup, it's a pretty sized cup.
03:15 There's no way that would be able to fit into the grip.
03:17 Until you then realize that Nekomate all the hands of a fairly soft plastic.
03:22 And while though immediately looking at that, and just assuming a write-off that there's no way it'd be able to fit a sippy cup, for example,
03:28 until you start to widen the hands away from the grip, you then realize, yeah, it can easily hold the cup in hand.
03:35 And of course, you can bring the hand closer to the Ootron, and then you can have it sipping from the cup.
03:40 I think that's a really nice touch.
03:41 I'm glad to see that they actually used softer plastic and not a more hard, rigid plastic.
03:46 Because there's no way it'd be able to do that with a regular gripping hand.
03:49 Just going to remove that for right now.
03:51 The figure, like I said, also comes in clear with some tools.
03:53 Let's have a look at those right now.
03:54 The tools are different from one another, at least from shape.
03:57 Color-wise, they're exactly the same.
03:59 Sort of more like a rusted red.
04:01 I do like the detail work that they actually managed to put into the tiny little tools that the Ootron exoskeleton can hold in his hands.
04:09 The figure also comes in clear with a blaster.
04:11 I like the look of this blaster quite a lot.
04:13 The front of it almost looks like Lugnut from Transformers Animated.
04:17 Does anybody else see that, perhaps?
04:18 I like the way they've colored the inside of that kind of more of a whiter.
04:22 And then the outside of that is more of a kind of a glowing, pulsating yellow.
04:26 It's a really neat-looking blaster, though.
04:28 Again, this can fit into either one of his hands.
04:31 The hands themselves are fairly easy to remove.
04:33 One thing I did notice, though, about the hands - I'm going to put this hand back in in a second -
04:36 but just removing one of the hands, I did notice that the peg that they used are fairly long.
04:41 Man, I just kept feeling like I was twisting this forever,
04:44 till eventually, yeah, you can see the very long peg that they ended up using.
04:48 I guess that's a good thing, just though be careful when it comes to swapping out the hands.
04:52 If there's resistance, obviously don't just yank it for the risk of potentially breaking the peg.
04:57 The figure also, like I said, does come in clear with a battle-damaged version of the exoskeleton head sculpt.
05:02 Pick your poison as to which one you would rather display.
05:04 I could probably see myself getting another couple of these Ootrons and having them on display.
05:08 Maybe a couple of them, for example, with the battle-damaged head that has the sagging-out socket of the eye,
05:13 and then a couple of them a little bit more cleaner.
05:15 I prefer the cleaner one, if I only was to have one.
05:18 If I had more than one, I would definitely swap it out, then, for the battle-damaged head sculpt instead.
05:22 You can see some real damage has been done to the top of the head.
05:25 Again, you've got the sagging little eye.
05:27 Whoa, this guy's seen better days.
05:30 But again, that can be then swapped out.
05:32 I might just swap that out at the end of the video.
05:34 Or, do you guys want to see it now?
05:36 Okay, we'll see it now.
05:37 Let's just go ahead and remove the head from the ball joint.
05:41 This, if you have, by the way, any time, any harder time to remove it from the ball joints,
05:46 the best advice I could obviously make is just heating it up with hot water.
05:50 Initially, I did heat it up with hot water, and then maybe I didn't have the plan to remove it on camera.
05:54 I had a little bit of time for the plastic, then, to cool again.
05:57 But let's just heat it up again, if you're having any issues to do this.
06:00 And then just pop the head back in place.
06:02 There we go.
06:03 Again, if I only had the chance to get one of these,
06:06 I probably would just then default to the cleaner-looking head sculpt myself.
06:09 But again, I've got to say, that's a cool-looking head that they decided to release also as well with the figure.
06:13 I did already mention the fact that the U-tron is technically removable.
06:16 Like Krang before, you simply just take the U-tron out.
06:19 And you can see, inside the cavity, they did take the time to sculpt everything,
06:24 paneling it nicely inside the body.
06:27 Unlike Krang, where you would have, again, had to remove the torso piece,
06:30 and able to get access to this.
06:32 This simply is just the case where you just remove the U-tron from the front.
06:35 The U-tron itself is a fairly soft plastic.
06:38 It's got some really nice detailing done to it.
06:40 You can see, again, the bright yellow eyes, tiny little pupils of black,
06:44 and a row of teeth on the top and the bottom, handled well in white.
06:47 It's a fairly, again, soft plastic.
06:49 At least it's finished all the way around.
06:51 It kind of looks like the bottom of it maybe is a part that they ended up having to add extra.
06:55 Because, again, like the outside seems like it's a more softer plastic.
06:57 I think the inside is a little more of a harder plastic.
06:59 But either way, it fits nicely.
07:01 Really without a lot of forcing either, to fit that inside the cavity of the exoskeleton.
07:06 Getting a closer look now with the battle damage release.
07:09 I do like the colors of the blue that they used here.
07:11 A lighter, a medium blue, and kind of a darker gray that they've incorporated in there as well.
07:16 Again, the panel lining looks fantastic on this figure.
07:18 It really does give them a chance, the artist, the talented artist behind the scenes at NECA Studios,
07:23 a chance to really go in there and showcase some of their skills.
07:26 I mean, just the artwork, just the sculpting work that they put into this piece,
07:30 and with all the darker grays and the darker panel lining of black,
07:33 really allows for all the sculpting to shine through.
07:36 Speaking of shining though, you may also notice that there's a whole bunch of little shine marks
07:39 across his tush, down the side of his leg, and of course across his forearm and the front of his chest also there as well.
07:45 I just dropped the ootron while I was doing that.
07:47 Let's pop that back in.
07:48 Like, the ootron stays fairly well in body.
07:51 The moment you kind of start to move things around, it may be the time when the figure then falls out.
07:55 But we're going to talk more about the articulation in a second.
07:57 Again, some really nice detailing done down below here.
07:59 Darker grays being, again, married nicely with the blues and the darker blues that they've used here as well.
08:04 It's a really neat looking figure.
08:06 For the articulation on this guy, here's again, like, when it comes to the articulation,
08:10 you really got to be careful more so with the torso,
08:12 because the torso, you can kind of see, gets pretty close in quarters,
08:15 the tiny little tentacles for the ootron.
08:17 But again, we're going to talk more about that right now.
08:19 For the articulation, starting first with the head sculpt, it does rotate all the way around.
08:22 It's on a ball joint again, after all.
08:24 Does move kind of up. That's as far up as it really does go.
08:27 Does look down a lot better though.
08:29 Also can rock back and forth also as well.
08:31 For the shoulders, the shoulders are going to be a little bit more limited,
08:34 simply just because, again, like, they're a lot blockier here to the top.
08:38 That there's a lot less opportunity really for the arms to hinge out further past the point than I'm doing right now.
08:43 You can, though, still rotate the arms all the way around.
08:46 The figure does have a swivel.
08:48 Although it's cut right into the bicep, it's not like an individual joint.
08:52 The figure does also have a single hinge in the elbow only.
08:55 Hands rotate also all the way around via the peg.
08:57 Now, when you get to the torso here, right in this section,
09:00 just be careful again when you're rotating it.
09:02 Even when you think you can clear it,
09:05 the only thing I would be worried of is just rotating it and scraping the plastic against the...
09:10 Ow! That would just... I can imagine the headache that that would cause.
09:13 But you don't want to make some abrupt turns with the top of the torso.
09:16 Just because, again, like, I think that would start to scratch the top of the U-tron.
09:21 And also a nice chance to see, as well, all again the detailing,
09:25 all the panels, the panel lining of the tubes, and all the little levers and pulleys
09:29 that would allow this robotic creature to start to move.
09:32 The figure also does have a swivel down below at the waist area there also as well.
09:37 But, again, it's a little kind of harder to do that just because the U-tron's sitting inside the body.
09:41 The legs do split.
09:42 I didn't notice right away that the legs moved as well as they did until I, again,
09:46 had to soften up the plastic just a little bit.
09:48 But you can get almost a successful splits from the U-tron's exoskeleton.
09:53 Legs move forward. The legs also move back.
09:55 There's a nice swivel at the top of the thigh.
09:57 Also, in addition to that, the figure does have a single hinge in the knee.
10:01 And while I did almost for a second think that there's a cut right there that would allow the knee to rotate,
10:06 I think it's actually just the way it's been sculpted into the leg.
10:09 The feet also hinge up and down this way.
10:11 There is a nice ankle pivot.
10:13 And in case you are interested, yeah, there are peg holes in the underside of the feet as well.
10:16 This is a figure that I really feel myself wanting to get more than one of these just because, again,
10:21 like the work that they put into both the head sculpts.
10:23 Defaulted back, I think I would have just, if I was to get only one of these guys,
10:27 I would want to really display it with this head sculpt because, again,
10:30 I really like the way that this turned out.
10:32 I also, though I didn't mention earlier, I like the way they kind of got the eye glowing.
10:36 Can you kind of see the way they've airbrushed a little bit of the yellow around the socket of the eye?
10:40 It really gives a nice little illumination to the face.
10:43 But I think, again, if I was to get only one of these figures,
10:46 I would lean more towards displaying him with this head sculpt.
10:49 But then to get more than one, which I think I'm really leaning more towards,
10:52 I could definitely see myself getting multiple versions of the U-Tron exoskeleton
10:57 and having them displayed in different types of damage.
10:59 Although, to be fair, the damage is really only central around the head sculpt.
11:03 It would have been nice if they could have found the means to maybe have the hands,
11:06 for example, of the forearms be removable, where you could pop those off, for example,
11:11 and replace them with battle damaged instead.
11:13 But, again, I really like how this one did turn out.
11:15 If you are a fan of the U-Tron, especially the way it looks in the Mirage comics,
11:19 it's definitely a good figure to be picking up for your collection.
11:22 While the U-Tron doesn't really resemble the Krang that we know and love
11:25 from the original '80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cartoon series,
11:28 you can certainly see the early building blocks, those blueprints that would be in place
11:32 as the U-Trons were predominantly featured in the original Mirage comic run.
11:36 These exoskeletons would then, of course, contain the tiny little brain aliens
11:41 sitting inside their stomach cavity.
11:43 And, again, you can kind of see then that would translate eventually to a more user-friendly,
11:48 a little more familier-friendly version of Krang that, again, we got in the cartoon series.
11:53 I always liked the look of the U-Trons, and I loved the idea that when it came to translating this
11:57 to a plastic figure, NECA went all out once again to include accessories along with the figure,
12:02 down to the fact that the figure even includes a sippy cup.
12:05 It might be the only time we've gotten a NECA figure.
12:08 Now, somebody could correct me very well in the comments section.
12:10 I think it's the only time we've gotten ourselves a sippy cup to come included with a NECA figure.
12:14 And he also comes included, like I said, with the blaster, which I have in his hand right now,
12:17 a couple of tools, and not to mention a swappable head sculpt, which I just, again,
12:21 decided to keep the battle damage head on, at least for the final looks for the figure.
12:25 For me, at least, I'm going to default back to the more cleaner-looking head,
12:29 but I could definitely really see myself getting another couple of these.
12:31 Maybe one. Maybe one. I don't want to go too crazy on this.
12:34 Before I know it, my whole shelf space will be overrun with endo-exoskeletons.
12:38 Not endoskeletons. That's Terminators.
12:40 Exoskeleton releases of U-Trons of varying different damages.
12:44 Yes, the damage is only really centralized around the head sculpt.
12:47 Again, I kind of wish that they could have included some of the more damaged parts,
12:50 maybe for its arms, for example, so you would have a little more customization to it.
12:54 But in all in all, head to toe, including the tummy-tum creature,
12:57 a nice-looking U-Tron from the folks over at NECA Toys.
13:00 What do you guys think of the U-Tron? Let me know down below in the comments section.
13:02 Have you picked up this figure? And a better question to ask, if you have picked them up,
13:06 how many have you picked up? You can come clean.
13:09 I mean, it's only just us. We're all friends. We'll kind of keep your secrets.
13:12 You have 100? Okay, that's maybe too much.
13:15 But what do you guys think? Have you guys picked up more than one U-Tron?
13:17 I could see myself, maybe again, picking one more. One more.
13:19 We're going to stop it right there, because we don't want to get too crazy
13:22 about collecting these in army building size.
13:25 Big thank you, once again, to the folks over at NECA Toys that did provide the sample
13:28 of the Mirage-inspired U-Tron that we could have a look at in this review.
13:31 If you guys enjoyed this video, I want to hit it with a like.
13:33 If you guys are loving the content you guys are seeing, and certainly on board to see more,
13:36 make sure you hit that subscribe button down below,
13:38 and that you're also turning on the bell notification.
13:40 Just a little tiny birdie, by the way, sitting on your shoulder,
13:43 maybe whispering in your ear. Yeah, birdies know how to talk English.
13:46 There will be more videos coming your way from the folks over at NECA Toys.
13:49 So, definitely make sure you're coming back here on a regular basis.
13:52 And, as always, guys, thanks for watching. See you guys next time.
