00:02 - Los Angeles, Hollywood, Beverly Hills,
00:14 all famous cities.
00:15 Their names are known throughout the world.
00:19 I was on my way up the coast to another famous place,
00:22 Malibu Beach, a resort filled with artists,
00:25 millionaires, and retired astronomers.
00:27 I was gonna see a man named Brian Race.
00:29 It was a peculiar day.
00:31 One minute it was foggy,
00:33 the next moment the sun would break through.
00:35 The first time I met Brian Race was years before.
00:38 It was in a casino where he was busily losing his money.
00:41 It didn't seem to bother him.
00:43 In fact, he was enjoying it.
00:44 I met him again on the beach in Miami.
00:49 He was playing at his favorite sport, skin diving,
00:52 but I thought he was kidding.
00:58 The other day I bumped into Brian Race
01:00 at the beach club in Santa Monica.
01:02 He was busy trying to knock himself out playing volleyball.
01:04 He greeted me like a long lost relative
01:06 and invited me to be his house guest for the weekend.
01:09 Brian Race in a way interested me,
01:11 so I accepted his invitation.
01:13 The activities at Malibu Beach include swimming,
01:15 painting, writing, and occasional fights.
01:19 I found Brian Race's house.
01:22 It was big.
01:23 And then I had the feeling it was unhealthy.
01:27 (dramatic music)
01:29 (gentle music)
01:32 - Mr. Race.
01:55 She came down the hallway
01:58 and before she introduced herself,
02:00 I felt she spelled trouble.
02:02 You could have capitalized the word trouble.
02:05 - Hello.
02:06 You must be Michael Lanyard.
02:10 - That's right.
02:11 - We've been expecting you.
02:13 I'm Laurie Race.
02:15 - Oh, I didn't know Brian had married.
02:18 - Well, don't feel badly.
02:20 We're still what you might call honeymooners.
02:22 Brian's in the study.
02:24 Don't let him keep you.
02:27 I want you to meet our other guests.
02:28 We'll be out by the pool.
02:30 - Fine, I won't be long.
02:31 (gentle music)
02:34 - Mike.
02:46 Roger, good come.
02:48 - Thanks.
02:49 - Promise you an enjoyable weekend, sit down, would you?
02:51 - Sure.
02:52 - Ever done any skin batting?
02:54 - You mean flippers, goggles, and a spear?
02:56 - Yeah, great spot for it here in Malibu
02:58 with the water so warm and clear.
03:00 - Well, maybe I'll try it if you have some equipment.
03:01 - Oh, plenty of equipment.
03:03 Flippers, masks, spears, everything.
03:05 Know anything about jewelry?
03:07 - Oh, I've seen some.
03:08 - My father collected it.
03:10 Diamonds mostly.
03:11 How do you feel about modern art?
03:13 - Oh, we were talking about diamonds.
03:15 - You think diamonds and modern art go together?
03:19 - Oh, I don't know, why?
03:20 - I don't.
03:23 Laurie does.
03:25 Mike, I wanna show you something.
03:27 Study it.
03:38 What does it say to you?
03:40 - So far it hasn't said a thing.
03:44 What's it supposed to be?
03:47 - My wife.
03:49 The painting is called "Wife, Malibu, California."
03:52 - I see.
03:54 - Of course it's not objective.
03:55 - Oh, definitely not objective.
03:57 Your wife posed for it, of course.
03:59 Who's the artist?
04:01 - Arturo Rienzi.
04:02 You'll meet him.
04:05 I don't particularly care for him.
04:06 - I'm worried, Mike.
04:09 I paid $25,000 for those paintings.
04:13 - Oh, it isn't the money that worries me.
04:16 It makes my wife happy.
04:17 But the jewel collection is extremely valuable.
04:21 I wouldn't want anything to happen
04:22 that might be embarrassing.
04:25 That's why I've imposed upon you.
04:27 It's rather like having a watchdog about it.
04:30 - Where do you keep the collection?
04:32 - Well, usually at the bank.
04:34 But I went to the vault this morning and got them out.
04:36 They're here now.
04:37 Would you like to see them?
04:38 - Of course.
04:38 I may not know much about this type of art,
04:41 but diamonds I know about.
04:43 (diamonds clinking)
04:46 - Well, they must be worth a fortune.
05:00 - It's only a small part of the collection,
05:02 but they're the most valuable pieces.
05:04 I don't know, Arturo's gonna do the painting here,
05:07 so perhaps I'm wrong.
05:09 Maybe there's really nothing to worry about.
05:11 - That's living in a dream world, Brian.
05:13 - Why do you say that?
05:15 - When you've got stuff like this around,
05:17 you've got something to worry about.
05:18 The ocean was only a few hundred feet away,
05:26 but maybe the ocean was too primitive for these people.
05:29 We had luncheon at the pool.
05:31 (waves crashing)
05:36 (dramatic music)
05:39 I kept looking at the group of guests
05:44 that Brian Race had gathered for the weekend.
05:47 They were strange people.
05:48 In their own way, each appeared to be playing a part.
05:51 Laurie looked preoccupied.
05:54 She wore the expression of someone
05:56 who wanted to go somewhere.
05:57 Then, Dr. Glopius, an art critic.
06:02 The most interesting thing about him, I thought,
06:04 was the dame who was always at his side.
06:07 Indra's expression hadn't changed since we met.
06:09 She was just bored,
06:11 and it was obvious she didn't care who knew it.
06:13 In a place like Malibu Beach,
06:16 you get to know people fast, or not at all.
06:19 I was sitting with the kingpin of them all,
06:21 the artist, Arturo Rienzi.
06:24 It wasn't hard to figure him out.
06:26 You might call him an egomaniac.
06:28 - Art is like the artist himself.
06:30 Perhaps nobody can understand him.
06:33 I wouldn't be too sure about that.
06:35 - We used to be together.
06:48 Now she'll do anything to destroy me.
06:50 She hates me because she's jealous of Laurie.
06:53 May I tell you something?
06:56 - Yeah.
06:58 - Laurie's jealous, too.
06:59 She's very fond of me, and...
07:02 (gentle music)
07:04 - It isn't what you see.
07:16 It's what you feel.
07:18 You see a tangle of lines and blotches
07:23 called "Wife, Malibu."
07:25 You hear Dr. Glopius playing an eccentric piano.
07:30 You watch Rienzi studiously at work, sketching.
07:33 And what do you feel?
07:34 You feel there's something wrong.
07:37 And it isn't only the painting.
07:39 By 11 o'clock, the party seemed to have scattered away.
07:42 For no reason I can think of,
07:44 Laurie and I were together, looking at the ocean.
07:46 - Brian told me he's known you a long time.
07:49 - You could say that.
07:50 - You're different than the others.
07:54 Tell me, who are you?
07:57 What do you do?
07:58 - Nothing special.
08:00 I'm very much like the others.
08:02 I eat, drink, and breathe, and know differently.
08:04 - That isn't what I meant.
08:06 Today I watched you studying each one of us.
08:09 Very exciting.
08:11 I like excitement.
08:14 Past automobiles, people, flying, skin diving.
08:18 Anything that can be called a challenge.
08:20 - What happens when you lose?
08:24 - I start all over again.
08:29 I profit by my mistakes.
08:30 Did Brian show you his family jewelry?
08:33 Did you think it was very elegant?
08:37 - Very handsome.
08:38 - Don't you think it's silly to keep things like that
08:42 locked up in a vault where nobody can enjoy them?
08:44 - Yes, I suppose it is.
08:45 - They were mine, I'd wear them all the time.
08:49 Even in swimming.
08:51 - They might not last long.
08:54 - I'm sure I was going to paint with them.
08:57 - Brian told me.
08:59 - Brian says I persuaded him to have the picture painted.
09:02 But it wasn't my idea, it was his.
09:04 What do you think of Arturo as an artist?
09:07 - Frankly?
09:09 - No, don't tell me.
09:10 I don't care whether you believe he can paint or not.
09:13 Arturo's different than the others.
09:15 He's exciting and he has talent.
09:16 The way I feel, I'm helping.
09:20 Can you understand that, Michael?
09:22 - Yeah.
09:25 - Brian and I have been married a month.
09:28 We only met two months ago.
09:30 You've known him for years.
09:33 You must know him much better than I do, right?
09:35 - I doubt that, but why?
09:39 - I thought you could give me the answer.
09:42 - To what?
09:43 - Why did he marry me?
09:46 - Why did you marry him?
09:48 - Thought he was exciting and we'd travel together
09:53 and never know dullness.
09:58 - Michael, why do you think Brian married me?
10:01 - Because I suppose he loves you.
10:05 - I don't believe it.
10:07 - Why?
10:09 - Don't you think I'd know?
10:11 Would you like to kiss me?
10:15 - Not particularly.
10:19 - Charity?
10:22 Just to give me reassurance?
10:24 (dramatic music)
10:27 - You're not a charity.
10:32 You don't need reassurance.
10:35 - See you later.
10:39 As I left, I noticed the time was 11.30.
10:43 It was a couple of hours later that I saw her again.
10:53 I was walking on the beach
10:54 when I saw something in the surf.
10:56 It was Laurie.
11:05 There was a wound in her back too big
11:16 to have been caused by a bullet or a knife.
11:19 If it were a painting, you could have called it.
11:21 Murder, Malibu, knife.
11:24 It's against the law to move a body.
11:26 But what do you do when the tide's coming in
11:28 and time's running out?
11:29 The beach was deserted.
11:35 The house had seemed deserted too
11:36 when I left it to go for a walk.
11:38 I didn't know where they all were
11:41 and at the time I wasn't even curious.
11:43 But now it made a difference.
11:45 Made a big difference.
11:51 The tide couldn't wait but I figured the police could.
11:54 With a little luck in the next few hours,
11:55 I figured on getting the right answers.
11:57 A few minutes later, I headed for the living room.
12:01 They were playing a game of charades
12:04 and Glopius was performing.
12:06 - Hello. - Tree?
12:07 Help us.
12:10 - Azirah.
12:11 - We're playing a game.
12:13 Dr. Glopius is acting out six words.
12:15 You know how the game works, don't you?
12:20 He's acting out the words of a song title
12:22 or an advertising slogan or something
12:24 and we've got to guess it.
12:25 Go on with the first word, Glop.
12:28 - Where's Lori?
12:35 - I don't know and I don't care.
12:37 - I want to see her.
12:41 - Why don't you stop being a fool?
12:43 Sleep?
12:46 Tired.
12:49 - I looked at Dr. Glopius again
12:51 and wondered as I said, death.
12:53 - You're right.
12:56 I was doing, "Oh, death, where is thy sting?"
12:58 Brian.
13:00 I'm tired of this silly game
13:03 and I'd like to try and explain my new theory
13:05 of art and design.
13:06 Now, where's the screen and the projector?
13:08 - It's in the closet.
13:09 Mike.
13:12 - You need me to study?
13:13 - Sure.
13:14 - What's that?
13:17 - Oh, nothing.
13:18 - Let me see it.
13:20 - It's sort of a lucky piece.
13:21 - Does it bring you luck?
13:23 - Sometimes.
13:24 - What is it, a fox?
13:26 A wolf?
13:27 A dog?
13:29 - It depends.
13:31 Right now, it looks like a bloodhound.
13:34 (dramatic music)
13:37 - Come in, Mike.
13:46 Shut the door and sit down.
13:47 (door closes)
13:50 - What's wrong?
13:51 - The stone's been stolen.
13:53 - Are you sure?
13:53 - Of course I'm sure.
13:55 I knew it.
13:56 I knew something, I guess, was gonna happen.
13:58 I just didn't expect it so soon.
13:59 - Well, take it easy, Brian.
14:01 Start from the beginning, will you?
14:02 - Look, let's not waste time talking about it.
14:04 I want those diamonds back.
14:05 It's up to you, Mike.
14:06 - What do you want me to do?
14:11 Gather your guests together and make a pretty speech
14:13 about returning the jewels and all will be forgiven?
14:15 - No.
14:16 It'd be much better to call the police.
14:18 - I don't wanna do that.
14:19 I told you, I don't wanna be embarrassed.
14:21 Besides, getting the jewels back shouldn't be so difficult.
14:24 Besides myself, only two other people in the house
14:26 knew the location in combination of the safe.
14:29 My wife and you.
14:30 - Why would Laurie steal them?
14:34 In a way, they belonged to her.
14:35 - I don't mean to imply that Laurie stole them.
14:37 Let's just say that she's emotional.
14:40 She told me once that it's a great pity
14:44 that Rienzi didn't have a great deal of money.
14:47 - I don't get the connection.
14:48 What's that got to do with diamonds?
14:50 - Don't you see what I'm getting at?
14:52 Laurie is painted by Rienzi
14:53 and the collection's worth a fortune.
14:55 Maybe she thought that,
14:57 oh, I don't know, I'm all mixed up.
14:58 I'm no detective.
14:59 Besides,
15:02 if Laurie didn't take them,
15:07 the next most logical person is you.
15:08 - Tell me more.
15:13 I know some things about you, Mike.
15:14 - Do you indeed?
15:16 - Your reputation, I mean.
15:18 - Go on.
15:19 - You're known both here and in Europe as an adventurer.
15:23 - That's not very strange.
15:26 It's what I am.
15:27 - A scrupulous adventurer?
15:28 - I have my scruples, Ray.
15:31 - Do they include stealing diamonds from your friends?
15:34 - You naturally assume if Laurie didn't take them,
15:36 I stole them, huh?
15:37 - Oh, I don't know.
15:39 I'm all mixed up.
15:40 I only meant that
15:41 if you did take them as a joke or something,
15:44 they would be returned.
15:46 Nothing more would be said about it.
15:48 - I've got a suggestion for you.
15:53 - What's that?
15:58 - You've got a gun.
16:01 Why don't you shoot yourself?
16:04 When I got back to the living room,
16:07 Dr. Glopius, the art critic,
16:09 was expounding his theory of art and design
16:12 with the aid of some photographic slides
16:14 that weren't any better than your Aunt Agatha
16:16 might've taken with a box camera.
16:17 - Now, what I'm trying to get is another dimension.
16:20 Not for photography alone,
16:21 but more of a stimulant for the artist.
16:24 Now, here's an example of what I mean.
16:25 This is the Malibu Beach firehouse.
16:30 It's upside down, but that don't make any difference.
16:32 Now I show you a tree.
16:34 This is a shot of Laurie.
16:38 Now, the artist has all these pictures in his mind,
16:41 and in his mind, he combines them like this.
16:43 He remembers a tree.
16:45 He remembers a firehouse.
16:47 Now, from this pattern,
16:49 he can choose the elements which appeal to him.
16:52 - As Glopius continued to give forth
16:53 with his esoteric ideas,
16:55 I began to wonder what made this weird group of people tick.
16:58 I asked myself, which of them could murder?
17:01 The answer was unpleasant.
17:02 I believed each one of them was capable of murder.
17:06 Now, this is a picture of Brian as a skin diver.
17:09 Now, pick out any other slide at random.
17:12 Here is Brian again, discovering a small undersea cavern.
17:15 I think Laurie took this picture.
17:16 It's the big rock offshore.
17:18 - I didn't hear the rest of Glopius' lecture
17:22 because that underwater slide had given me an idea.
17:25 The slide could be the right answer,
17:35 but to make it stick, I had to find a pair of flippers,
17:38 a diving mask, and a spear.
17:41 It didn't take long.
17:55 I had expected them to be still wet.
17:58 They were.
18:00 (dramatic music)
18:03 - Looking for something?
18:18 - I think I found it.
18:21 - Oh, what's on your mind, Mike?
18:23 - Where's your wife?
18:25 - Laurie?
18:29 - Why?
18:30 - She's around somewhere, I suppose.
18:34 - Why?
18:34 Is this your spear?
18:37 - Well, I suppose it is.
18:40 - And the mask and the flippers, those yours too?
18:42 - I don't get this, Mike.
18:45 - When did you last use this stuff?
18:48 - Well, yesterday, day before, I don't remember.
18:50 What's the difference?
18:51 - I think you used them tonight, including the spear.
18:54 With this, I think you stabbed your wife
18:57 and left her on the beach.
18:59 - Oh, Mike, that's absurd.
19:01 - If this spear fits the hole in Laurie's back,
19:05 it's not absurd.
19:06 - But then you'd have to find her, wouldn't you?
19:08 - Suppose I have found her.
19:09 - No, you couldn't.
19:12 - Why not?
19:14 Because you left her body in the surf
19:15 and the tide should have carried it away?
19:17 The chances were perfect against anyone finding her.
19:20 But I did find her, Brian.
19:22 - You're lying.
19:24 - Am I?
19:25 Her body's upstairs in one of the bedrooms
19:26 of this madhouse.
19:28 I was banking on the fact that he was frightened
19:30 and that his aim might not be too good in the dark.
19:33 His first shot was too close for comfort.
19:35 On the second shot, his gun must have momentarily jammed.
19:42 His third shot was a wild miss.
19:48 'Til he came too close.
19:51 (dramatic music)
19:54 And I realized he'd made me chase him out into the open.
20:05 I was in trouble.
20:06 He suddenly stopped to take careful aim.
20:09 (Brian screams)
20:13 I was lucky because the spear hit Brian.
20:17 It hit him hard.
20:19 (birds chirping)
20:22 - It's ridiculous to die after a few lousy ballots.
20:28 - What do you mean, Rayce?
20:30 - I need a lot of money.
20:32 Those diamonds were insured.
20:34 I hid them in a chink in a rock out there
20:36 about 50 feet down where no one could ever find them.
20:39 But Laurie caught me at it.
20:42 I had to kill him, Mike.
20:44 You understand that, don't you?
20:46 - You're not gonna die, Rayce.
20:47 At least not yet.
20:48 - You didn't kill your wife for money either.
20:50 You were jealous of Rienzi.
20:51 You were gonna frame him and Laurie for that phony theft.
20:53 - Look, Mike, I didn't mean to kill her.
20:55 I'll recover the diamonds.
20:58 I'll give 'em to you.
20:59 I'll take the loss.
21:00 I don't need the money.
21:01 - That's a pretty good offer, but you're forgetting--
21:02 - And what?
21:03 My wife is at it now.
21:04 No one will ever know.
21:06 Laurie was always doing silly things.
21:07 We'll just say that she disappeared.
21:09 Nobody would doubt it.
21:11 She hadn't been happy with me anyway.
21:13 - Sounds fairly logical.
21:15 - Then it's a deal.
21:16 I'll fix my shoulder and we'll go put Laurie back
21:20 with the title and the rest.
21:22 - It won't work, Rayce.
21:25 You see, you forgot one thing.
21:27 - Forgot?
21:29 What?
21:30 - My scruples.
21:32 - I can walk.
21:37 (dramatic music)
21:40 - We heard shots.
22:01 Brian, what happened?
22:03 - Ann, call the police right away.
22:06 - The police upset me, if you don't mind.
22:08 - Take it easy.
22:09 We'll all wait here.
22:11 - What's going on?
22:11 What are you doing?
22:12 - Don't you remember?
22:14 I told you earlier this evening.
22:17 I'm a bloodhound.
22:18 (dramatic music)
22:21 (dramatic music)
22:24 (dramatic music)
22:27 (dramatic music)
22:29 (dramatic music)
22:32 (dramatic music)
22:35 (dramatic music)
22:38 (dramatic music)
22:40 (dramatic music)
22:43 (dramatic music)
22:46 (dramatic music)
22:49 (dramatic music)
22:51 (dramatic music)
22:54 (dramatic music)
22:57 (dramatic music)
