00:00 Bill Maher is not pleased with Barbie, joining the small but loud anti-Barbie hate train.
00:05 The HBO Real Time host posted his critique of filmmaker Greta Gerwig's summer sensation,
00:10 going on a bit of a rant on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, "I was hoping it wouldn't
00:15 be preachy, man-hating, and a #zombielie.
00:18 Alas, it was all three."
00:20 Maher then went into his extremely lengthy post, which was rather hard to follow and
00:24 frankly a bit cringey, overall referring to the film as a "#zombielie."
00:29 Now what is a zombie lie?
00:31 Well, allow Maher to explain in painstaking detail.
00:34 What is a zombie lie?
00:36 Something that never was true but certain people refused to stop saying it, i.e. tax
00:40 cuts for the rich, increased revenues, or something that used to be true but no longer
00:44 is, but certain people pretend it's still true.
00:47 Barbie is this kind of #zombielie.
00:50 Spoiler alert, Barbie fights the patriarchy, right up to the Mattel board who created her,
00:55 consisting of 12 white men.
00:57 The patriarchy.
00:58 Except there's a Mattel board in real life, and it's 7 men and 5 women.
01:02 Ok, not perfect even, Steven, but not the way the board in the movie, which takes place
01:06 in 2023, is portrayed, and not really any longer deserving of the word patriarchy.
01:11 Yes, there was one, and remnants of it remain, but this movie is so 2000 late.
01:17 Maher later continues in his so-called 2000 late movie rant, "I know, I know.
01:22 How could I know about the patriarchy?
01:23 I am a man."
01:25 That argument is so old and so silly.
01:27 Of course, none of us can know exactly what others go through life, but I can see the
01:31 world around me, and I can read data.
01:33 The real Mattel board is a pretty close mirror of the country, where 45% of the 449 board
01:38 seats filled last year in Fortune 500 companies were women.
01:41 "Truth is, I'm not the one who's out of step.
01:44 I'm living in the year we're living in.
01:46 Barbie is fun, I enjoyed it, but it is a #zombielie, and people who don't go along with zombie
01:52 lies did not take some red pill.
01:54 Just staying true to current reality.
01:56 Let's live in the year we're living in."
01:58 Maher is the latest male media pundit to take issue with the film, alongside several conservative
02:03 voices ranging from podcaster Ben Shapiro to billionaire Elon Musk.
02:07 But it looks like Barbie is the one with the last laugh.
02:10 With all the chatter, good and bad, the film just crossed the $1 billion global mark at
02:15 the box office, and has become the biggest box office haul for a live-action film by
02:19 a female director in cinema history.
02:22 Sorry Bill, no zombie lies there.
