What should the Alabama offense do with its quarterback battle
Transcript
00:00 talk about the quarterbacks.
00:01 I think coach Saban kept everything intentionally vanilla,
00:04 intentionally simple on Saturday.
00:06 And I think coach Saban and Tommy Reese intentionally rotates the quarterbacks
00:10 through with second, first, third string offensive players.
00:15 In order to not confuse the pundits, not confuse the media and the fans,
00:20 but to just make sure that all the quarterbacks feel like they're still
00:23 a part of this competition.
00:25 When it's all said and done, and we're about to kick off against
00:29 MTSU and more importantly, the next week against Texas.
00:34 I think Tommy Reese has two really good options.
00:37 Well, really three in Buckner as well, but
00:39 Tommy Reese needs to decide what he wants to do on offense.
00:42 Do I want to lean on the running backs?
00:45 Do I want to threaten offenses with a running quarterback?
00:49 Or do I wanna take the guy with the highest ceiling?
00:52 I think the guy with the highest ceiling is Ty Simpson, and
00:54 he showed that on Saturday.
00:55 But he showed that he's still got a lot of rookie mistakes in him.
00:58 There was a couple of ugly passes, there was a couple of dumb decisions.
01:01 But equally speaking, his arm strength, his passing mechanics,
01:07 look the most polished, you're the most professional.
01:10 He has the best chance to be a true professional quarterback out of the three.
01:13 And so what do you wanna do, Tommy Reese, on offense?
01:17 How do you want to orchestrate everything?
01:20 Do you want to line up behind your offensive line and get physical and
01:24 just lean on the running game?
01:25 If you do, then the quarterback decision becomes far less important,
01:30 in my opinion.
01:31 And I think you're more likely to lean on,
01:34 I think you're more likely to lean on Ty Simpson because you can deal with
01:37 the mistakes.
01:38 You can deal with the mistakes by hiding him in play action,
01:42 passing situations, getting him out on the run.
01:45 Look, if I'm Tommy Reese right now as we sit, I think that that's what I do.
01:49 Because the longer term future for the Alabama Crimson Tide, look,
01:52 I think you're probably gonna win more right here off the bat with Joey Milrow.
01:55 But think about the next six to 12 months.
01:57 Think about Ty Simpson over the next two years.
02:01 Your best bet, I think he presents you with the highest ceiling
02:04 after what we saw on Saturday.
02:06 No, granted, it could have been just a good day for him, and
02:08 we don't see everything.
02:10 But over the next two years in an Alabama uniform,
02:13 I think you throw Ty Simpson out here early.
02:15 You deal with the growing pains.
02:16 You beat MTSU.
02:18 You may or may not beat Texas with him.
02:20 But the Texas game is honestly irrelevant, irrelevant.
02:23 You win the SEC West, you go to the SEC Championship and win it.
02:28 You're gonna be in the playoff, and then you may play Texas again.
02:31 That's great.
02:32 I think you throw Ty Simpson out there right now, and you deal with the growing
02:35 pains behind this really strong offensive line and
02:38 behind the defense that looked incredible on Saturday.
