00:00 He was in boarding for a while, adopted out and returned, so he had been with the
00:05 rescue for at least two years. I'm Lisa and this is Brad's story for GOB. He was
00:11 found as a stray in Houston. He was in pretty rough shape. His tail was half
00:16 gone. He was in a ton of pain, but despite that he walked right up to his rescuers
00:20 and was very sweet and friendly. They discovered while he was at the shelter
00:25 that he's deaf. When I met him, he had been with the rescue for a number of
00:31 years. They sent him to a prison canine training program down in Canyon City,
00:36 Colorado, where he learned some hand signals so that he can be communicated
00:40 with. He was adopted out at one point by a foster family that had taken him on,
00:45 but they ended up returning him after a few months and then he ended up in our
00:49 boarding facility and that's where I met him. My last foster had gotten adopted
00:53 and I was looking for another one to take on. He came home with me. Sorry, I'm
00:56 getting emotional because he's such a sweet dog. He was like, "Okay, I live
01:00 here now. Where are the snacks?" You know? I was like, "I can't let this dog go." I just
01:08 didn't want him to get returned again. In November, we adopted him. He's not
01:13 reactive to anything. If I were him, I would be really hesitant of people after
01:18 having been put through all of that, but he loves people and just being around
01:22 him, there's something about him. He's got this energy that's really positive.
01:26 I gave him a bath and he started jumping at the water and he was so happy. I just
01:31 started laughing so hard. He sometimes just goes and hangs out in the bathtub by
01:36 himself. It's hard to get him back out after he's clean. He is a little bit
01:40 lazy as well. He was twitching in his sleep and the back end fell off and he
01:45 just decided to stay there for a while instead of getting back on the couch. I
01:48 find him a lot sleeping with one of his back legs on his face. Like, this is the
01:53 thing that he does and it doesn't make any sense. He likes sunbathing, so I'll
01:57 find him outside in the yard sunbathing too. He watched fireworks with me on the
02:02 4th of July. He didn't really react at all. That is a benefit to having a dog
02:06 that can't hear. He's not super clingy. He's fine going and doing his own thing.
02:11 I typically don't take him to dog parks. Off-leash situation is tough with a
02:16 deaf dog because you can't recall them verbally. The other reason is his breed.
02:20 If there is an incident, I don't want him to get blamed for it if he's put in a
02:24 situation where he has to defend himself. I get a lot of people that first meet
02:28 him and you can tell they're hesitant because of his breed and his size and
02:32 after about 10 minutes they're smiling and telling me how much they love him. He
02:36 looks like he skips leg day. He has what I lovingly refer to as a can opener head.
02:40 I suspect that maybe he came from a backyard breeder in Houston, potentially
02:46 ended up with someone that wanted to fight and because he's such a docile
02:50 personality he may have been dumped on the streets because he wasn't useful as
02:54 a fighting dog. I'm really inspired by his ability to be so forgiving given
02:59 everything that he's been through. He's still able to love everyone even though
03:02 humans have let him down more than once.
